Really is a shame. As someone who's favorite kind of games are long, adventure games that focus heavily on the story, it sucks to see let's players turning away from those kind of games (aside from the occasional AAA games). Now, I love seeing favorite youtubers get together to play lighthearted games with friends, but I find myself seeking out new KZbinrs sometimes to watch longer story driven games. Also, as someone who does have a shorter attention span, the 10-15 minute videos don't quite do it for me. You look away for a few seconds and the video's over.
@crizmeow8394 Жыл бұрын
I’ve really disliked how many gaming KZbinrs I’ve seen devolve their channels from longer games to the newest bright trendy multiplayer game of the moment. I feel it robs them or character just so they can stage “funny” moments so they can pump out more videos quickly. With the least appealing thumbnails knows to men. I think it makes them almost get stuck on the latest trend and makes their channel fill of younger crowds while the KZbinr never matures or grows as a creator.
@RuneTacticss Жыл бұрын
100% agreed, many of the best games out there are very story or text heavy-and unfortunately a lot of people don't have the patience or want to play those kinds of games, and instead want to play the popular flashy new games. At least there are some youtubers who play story heavy games, but twitch streamers are where it gets really bad, and a twitch streamer who gets bored if there isn't crazy things happening every moment is very common. Something else that pisses me off, might as well rant, people who make fun of others or insult others who play text heavy or story based games or games that require a lot of thought. I had someone who made fun of me for playing Fire Emblem because its a "Visual novel" according to them. Clearly they don't know what they're talking about but still. The Outlast Trials is a great example of a vast majority of youtubers and streamers just not...Thinking about the games they play. They kinda just run around and throw caution to the wind when in reality, that's the complete opposite way the game is supposed to be played and they complain about getting a bad grade because of it. Also hate it when a youtuber picks up a game for one video then drops it.

I can't recall if I've brought this up or not - I'm sure someone in the comments has in recent months. Whether it's the r/AITA or Top 5 Ghost reaction stuff that vibes well with your grouchy humour, to more thoughtful videos like this one regarding the state of games, it's been quite an unexpected (though totally welcome) pivot for your channel's usual form. I've been watching you for about five years now, and it's been a privilege to watch your content evolve over that time. You're a top lad, Mr. Wolfe :3 *EDIT:* I couldn't agree more with what you said at the end of your _Faith_ review. There's nothing more unhelpful than the opinions of folk who lack curiosity. It reminds me of those people who will unironically say "there's no good music any more" whilst I literally have a bandcamp profile full of amazing bands and albums, most of which were made and released in the last five years. Basically the fastest way for a person to loudly proclaim that they don't know what they're talking about.

The point John made about how TikTok/shorts bled through people's preferences of no longer liking long playthroughs just gave us a harsh reality of what content is going to become. People don't want to be invested and slowly tread up a plot hill with unexpected obstacles and twists in a 30 part series, they want all that happen in a single video or 2minute short. I grew up watching and even rewatching some of my favorite long playthroughs, i.e. uberhaxornova & sp00n's dead rising 2 OTR 50+ parts, or treetopia from the creatures 100+ episodes. Everyday, no matter how shitty or great my day was, getting that upload notification of a new part of my favorite series on my phone gave me solace that I can have 30 minutes to myself watching it when I got home. as we know it, with the lack of long, plot driven games, goes away more and more of complex and refreshing motifs in games that needed those 5-10hr lengths to develop
@baronobeefdip8075 Жыл бұрын
I'm genuinely curious. Was it the length of the playthroughs that you enjoyed, or was it the multi-part aspect? Or something else? I'm asking because, like John showed, there are still people who uploaded whole playthroughs of Burnhouse Lane; most of them are just in one video instead of multiple. The only difference that I see is the number of videos (and, indirectly, when exactly they're uploaded), which isn't something that affects the viewing experience for me. I know that some people enjoy the episodic approach, but I'm curious if that's a vital factor instead of just a preference. Or is it more about lamenting that some channels didn't play Burnhouse Lane, even though they played The Cat Lady?

Oh, cat lady. I’ve noticed that game really does hold a special place in the hearts of many people struggling with depression, myself included. I rewatched a playthrough of it while in a residential mental health rehab, and it was comforting. You described it perfectly with that “silver lining” comment. So many games fail to get that balance. It’s easy enough to make a dark, edgy, brutal game; it’s hard to weave the idea of hope and redemption into it without making it feel insincere or cheesy. My friends at rehab who were also struggling with depression enjoyed it too, we watched it together. It was good long form content that helped the scary days go by until we could begin to notice the healing. It makes me really sad that long form content is dying off, it’s honestly shaped so much of my life. Alas, eras do come and go. I’m glad you got to enjoy these horror games for yourself! i really appreciate john's ability to articulate valid critique for games while recognizing and emphasizing differences in taste and factoring that into how much it may or may not have affected his bias. i also appreciate the defense of both granny and Faith-- different style horror that may be blown off by those looking for more modern graphics yet offer amazing gameplay and in Faith's case, effective atmosphere. thanks for your thoughts, John!

it sucks that these games arent very popular here anymore, i have a shitty laptop and cant play much so whenever i get curious about a game i depend on youtube. sometimes it's hard to find lets plays from people i already follow and enjoy watching. it's a way of finding new channels, but it sucks that some don't post these anymore.

Great video and review John. I chuckled on the bits where u were like "Do I wanna keep that in the video? And I'll cut to an ad". But yeah it's sad to hear abt long gameplays. Glad u gave these games attention. I hadn't heard of few of them.

Arguably, my favorite part of your let's plays is the very end, because I always look forward to your overall analysis of the game. You just have such a strong eye for what works about a game and what doesn't, that I always walk away learning a little bit more about good game design. So for me, this review format is great. It's an even more fully realized version of those last few minutes!

It really is a shame that long playthroughs are not as profitable for youtubers as they used to be. I remember when Burnhouse Lane was released I waited for you or Manly to play it, but alas never did so I watched it somewhere else. Downfall remake is still my favorite Harvester game, but Burnhouse Lane is a close second.

I feel like I’ve had to look to more of my fave KZbinrs’ back catalogs lately for what I want to watch and you’ve suddenly shown me why-I’m looking for those long playlists to keep me company over a long period of time. It’s more stable to use those when I’m working on long projects than having to jump tones and styles every 20 min to an hour. I’ve been scrounging up 40-video “vintage” game playlists and 6-hour-long Tim Rogers reviews of weird or popular games. Slow gaming is my KZbin jam to this day 😂

as a huge cat lady fan, thank you so much for letting us know about burnhouse lane! I'm def part of the group that relies too much on YT for updates to games so I would have been in the dark otherwise. always love hearing your opinions on games so more of these vids would be nice in lieu of a full playthrough. (but I would be so down if you ever did a burnhouse lane playthrough or a stream of it one day)

Honestly, you are my go to guy for horror games, so even if a game did come out 6 months ago, I probably don't know much about it if you didn't play it or talk about it. So thank you for still making these breakdown videos too!

You’ve always been great at giving fair, but honest critiques - and honestly, I kind of appreciate hearing someone who’s not afraid to just admit “yeah this game’s great but not a flawless masterpiece like everyone keeps saying it is” (as with SIGNALIS). Really love these kinds of short n sweet review videos, looking forward to more of them!! Great work 👏❤

I've always enjoyed your gameplay videos but above all what kept me here besides personality is that you'd usually give the game a fair review at the end not only highlighting negatives but postives and things you feel the creators improve one. While I do wish I could've watched you play I still really enjoyed this video because your always really good with your reviews 😊

This was a great little "sum it up" video for me. I typically watch people play longer let's plays unless the game recently got my attention or it's a game I wanted to play for a while, but with your review on Burnhouse Lane, I think I'll play it myself instead of watching for once! It looks really good and I can't wait to catform in real time!

i feel like it would be so good for the game if you actually play burnhouse lane on the channel though- it would help more people know about this beautiful gem a lot. it is such a good game. adventure games are still played . there is still a market for it maybe you can do a part series if you want to fit in your schedule

You know what else helped people know about the game? This video, that I already made. That you're acting like it doesn't exist. Believe it or not, there are ways to give games exposure besides publicly playing the entire game from start to finish

Longer lets plays were the highlight of my teens. I’d be so excited to wait for the next part of different game son all my favourite channels., or id wait for a few parts to come out and binge on the weekends. I wish there was more audience for it :( The cat lady was such a good lets play. Thanks for putting this video together John

thanks for sharing your thoughts on these John! I'd like to add that I'm one of the people that would have admittedly really enjoyed to see these as actual playthroughs, but I understand that with time constraints you might not have been able to, and if it was between not seeing them at all or getting a summary like this, then I'm very glad you did at least I tend to enjoy any content you put out, I've just got a soft spot for long playthroughs and series, they're very comfortable to tuck in and binge or have to look forward to episode by episode, and I still love them a lot I realize that modern youtube has started to move away from that format, and I can't fault creators for sticking with what works best for them, but I'll always advocate for long playthroughs whenever feasible! thanks for reading

I really find myself missing longer indie horror titles that had so many different parts. I am disappointed not to see your playthrough of Burnhouse Lane but I understand that it's just a consequence of the direction KZbin gaming/let's plays has been moving in. It's such a shame the general attention span of audiences has shrunk down like it has. I did really enjoy this video, though, and I'd be interested to see more of these types of thing if there are other games you don't end up playing for the channel!

I really miss longer games and longer let's play content! I'm always up for a unique, cool, and story-driven series with my favorite creators like you, MrKravin, CJU, and Gab! I appreciate this video and your reviews of these really cool games. I personally LOVE the Faith games, I really enjoy the graphics and the little spooks and scares amongst the bigger "oh, crap!" moments! The Cat Lady and games like it are amazing, that mix of mental and supernatural was really fun and freaky! I enjoy story and plot, weird and disturbing, unique and unusual games. Little Nightmares 1 and 2, Amnesia: The Dark Descent, Resident Evil Village, The Cat Lady, Sally Face, Outlast... you have shared some gems with us over the years. I went back to watch your play through of Amnesia:The Dark Descent recently and it was weird having it all chopped up into 8-10 minutes as it's such a tease for me. I did enjoy your sass, as usual. I also wanted to see exactly when I first started watching you, it was the game Dear Esther. You really put in a lot of time and hard work for us, John. It does not go unnoticed or unappreciated. I watch your non-gaming videos as well because I know I'm going to see quality content and sassy humor, the debunking the scariest videos online and the r/aita stuff has been a lot of fun. I hope maybe you can play Burnhouse Lane on Twitch sometime soon if you feel like replaying it. You definitely don't need to though... I'm easy-going and never demand content or upload schedules. I just enjoy whatever my favorite people want to share. Branch out and explore, I say... many of us will be watching and appreciating it all. Thank you, John, for always being thoughtful and entertaining, encouraging us to think critically! And yes, we love our Granny games! They really are fun, I enjoy the strategy and stealth aspects.

I have to say the cat lady and rusty lake series are my favourites of yours. Its a shame it's not viable on KZbin really at the moment but I really hope long form content and series comes back as it was what I truly loved from KZbin.

I have been anticipating your faith chapter 3 playthrough since I saw it being released those 6 or so months ago. In the past I might have been bummed out that you decided to not play it for the channel, but after watching one of your RE4 videos that you mentioned that you wish you could have played it by yourself, that you didn't have as much fun as you could had otherwise, I am totally behind you playing the games you are interested on your own accord. This type of video format is also very enjoyable to watch, if you decide to make more of them I will happily watch them. I also hope they will work well with the current youtube algorithm.

Hi John! Big fan, I follow the twitters (though I don't have an actual account still so I should probably do that), been subscribed on twitch for like 2ish years?, and just generally enjoy all your content / overall presence! Me and my S.O. have greatly enjoyed your content over the years and really appreciate this new video form! It's really cool to hear your thoughts on games and to not have their stories spoiled with a full playthrough. Plus, your way of supporting good indie games that encourages other people to play them is really vital to the indie game market and helps solo devs feel like they have more of a chance. Also, it's cool that this content form seems to be a lot more like the kind of content you originally wanted to make back in the early days of Harshly Critical, but even better. Better because we've seen you grow over time as a creator and performer. Very nicely spoken! Keep doing what you love man. For what it's worth, you'll always have us in your corner! All the best wishes! P.S. Congrats on the baby!

First of all, this video is really good, and I think it really does show how much you care about horror as a genre rather than just following various trends. Second of all, I do agree that a lot of people do tend to overrate older game mechanics, and I say that as someone that actually does enjoy replaying all of the old survival horror titles I enjoyed as a kid. I think sometimes people just remember the game in general fondly, or they remember the most enjoyable aspects of something when thinking about it. Not everything in the past was perfectly executed, even if it *fits* in the overall design of those games and how they flow, that doesn't mean that modern games absolutely need that to be "true survival horror" or whatever.

I found this channel back in the harshlycritical days and enjoyed seeing you examine games and gameplay in real time. Now the lets play scene is different and im watching more video essay and analysis, so having some of this thrown in is honestly great! Its ok to not drop a 30+ hour lets play or a 3 hr video essay, this fits in the middle.
