I'd like to mention a specific indie horror game. I think it was called Lost in Vivo, where most of the horror I felt was not because of the monsters or the tribulations of my own characters, but rather the fear I felt because my character's motivation was to save his dog. As a dog lover and owner, I could not only immediately identify with the main character, putting himself through such surreal nightmares for his dog, but I was also terribly afraid that a wrong decision I made in the game might give me a bad ending, and hurt the dog. Since the main character is also an unreliable narrator, when the game throws a "dog mimic" at you, after a significant amount of time, I was extremely hesitant to shoot it. I already knew my character had mental issues, what if I was hurting my dog? Another type of horror that I personally find very attractive is something you find less in games like Outlast and more in games from say, Puppet Combo, where death is practically inevitable and it can come ANYTIME from ANYWHERE. The mercilessness of those games sometimes is terrifying. In games like Resident Evil, you get a health bar, you get a chance to heal. In Puppet Combo games if you mess up you are likely to die without a chance to recover from your mistake. The fact that no room is safe amplifies it. I remember the first time I played a horror game where a pursuing enemy crawled into a vent after me. We're so used to the mechanic of enemies being unable to pursue us into vents that when it finally *does* happen, we immediately panic. Imagine how terrifying it would be if suddenly in Resident Evil 2 Mr. X just started following you into safe rooms halfway through the games. Take the N64 Era of games, I still remember my first time in the Sewer stage of Shadows of the Empire, I was completely unable to finish the game due to my crippling fear of the dianoga enemies. They are not very special, not harder than regular enemies, you don't have less power or maneuverability, but they are still so terrifying that until I was 28 I never completed that level on my own. Their roar, their shape, the fact that you can only barely attack them from outside their range and the fact that the game FORCES you to confront them. There was something innately terrifying about those particular enemies that scarred a whole generation of gamers and it wasn't even intentional.

@@MrMayonnaise333 Turn-based combat is a hard thing to get right. Scrolling through menus is not immersive gameplay and I don't think it blends with horror at all. It's a shame about the exploration as well. I'm still hoping some aspects of the game get revamped while in early access.

Thank you for giving the fantastic soundtrack of World of Horror prominence in this. I could never praise that game highly enough for what it brings to the table, nor recommend a more solid text-/low graphics-based full package of what horror has to offer to a player when done as a compelling adventure. Graphics don't have to mean everything- indeed, they don't even have to mean much at all, as that game very much proves. By design much of the tension stems from the flow of the story and the unexpected nature of RNG. The art may slightly unnerve, but it's the gameplay that really does the one-two combo of keeping you into it. Two runs with identical events could go drastically different depending on the roll of a few virtual die. The more people know about that game and give it a shot, the better.

And I like how they introduce the flood with the found footage camera from one of the Marine's helmets.

The whole segment at 7:15 is the exact reason why I don't care for 1st person horror games... I understand that it's SUPPOSED to be scarier because you're seeing through view of the player, but the fear (to me) is lost because I know that I, myself, am in no real danger.... but when I'm able to see my character (fixed camera or over-the-shoulder), I DO feel that guilt you mention... like, the fate of the player lies in MY hands... you also made a sensible point with horror movies... more fear is instilled the more you empathize with the characters. But to me, (classic) survival horror games will always be the scariest!

One of my biggest horror experiences actually came from Dayz. It was 1:30am when i was playing and i was keeping watch on my castle base me and some buddies from the UK had built on to. I was actually getting drowsy irl and in the game it was night time and raining. I was going to log off and head to bed when i heard the faint clicking of our bike lock. Someone was trying to get in... I fired some warning shots and heard footsteps scurry off as the gunfire attracted zombies. Then 10 minutes later the clicking resumed. Ive never experienced sheer terror like i did that night when faced by another player attempting to break and enter, steal our hard earned loot and kill me if they had the chance. That fear was primal.

I had to jump over dead soldiers just to get out and find cover from the hail of bullets. I was hoping you were going to touch more on immersion/suspension of disbelief for horror games; all the things you mentioned don't work for everyone. I keep thinking back on the controversy around Joseph Anderson's horror games don't scare me video- the way he approaches most games (very mechanically interested in how they work) quickly removes the veneer of risk when, as he puts it, your godlike power to reload soon nullifies the initial spooks. He mentions rougelikes as being the most effective for him like Don't Starve, which reminds me of your minecraft example- it's very possible you'll lose all your progress and that gets the adrenaline going. However, while this might be effective for some, it's equally likely to just frustrate the player- I don't find Don't Starve that scary, but I did quit playing it because the "wasted time" was just not fun for me. Psychological horror, I think, might be the most effective, but is also the most particular to the player. I, for instance, think subnautica can be absolutely terrifying, but I find the ocean to be terrifying to begin with. Silent Hill or I Have No Mouth and I Must Scream games didn't do anything for me, despite the psychological horror being interesting (I also think growing up with those games and that level of graphical fidelity are crucial points, some may find the horror portrayals more humorous than scary). This is my long way of saying there will never be a perfect horror formula which works for everybody, and may not work for some people at all (who, as in Joe's case, feel fear in other kinds of media).

The horror game i have being playing right now is phasmophobia. It's a game in which you go into missions to try to identify what kind of ghost is haunting the place. For being a early access game and a multiplayer one at that, it makes a surprising amount of right choices for the genre. It's specially effective if you're someone like me and horror movies with ghosts make you pause at night wondering if you really need to go to the kitchen grab a cup of water before sleeping.
