I agree. I'm liberal, but what I admire about Ben is that he criticizes both sides when criticism is due. I can't stand it when people criticize one side while acting as if their own side is made up of saints. And there are some people on this comment board who just can't handle that truth so they talk shit about him. And then there's the Alt-Right version, that thinks whiteness is what makes you American, and that whiteness must be protected. Ben, Trump condemned everything you wanted him to condemn. He just didn't go overboard in a tantrum to virtue signal like you feel compelled to do. You'll notice he avoided using group names and focused on actions and sentiments, which was the wise thing to do by far in this case. There's a difference in the approach: You're having a righteousness fit, while Trump is staying calm and condemning actions and ideologies [basically saying "you know who you are"] rather than trying to divide people and ignite resentment by demonizing & naming groups. You want him to take sides and set up a civil war - he is trying to avoid that. If Trump acted like you in this situation we would quickly have a civil war on our hands, and most of us don't want that, not even the Alt Right. Listen to what Sheriff Clarke said about it, and how he affirmed that the president needs to stay calm and not rail on individuals OR groups because it only fans the flames of hatred and violence.

I live not far from Charlottesville in the farm country. We have every race and creed of farmer out here and work together regularly with yearly annual work. Of course there are ghetto parts of Charlottesville, and a little in culpepper. But it's definately not that bad. Most of those people that caused all of this trouble are out of town, probably never worked a hard day in their life. Would probably be better for it though. I think there is a big lack of perspective from all sides when it comes to where they really stand.

Whether you agree with the Alt-right or not is irrelevant. They were there legally and had a permit to protest. The left were not there legally and did not have a permit to protest. They violated and infringed upon the rights of another group to make their protest. The left would have been better advised to have just not engaged. Let them make their protest and exercise their freedom of speech. These white nationalists/supremacists only appeal to like-minded people - as do all groups representing their own ideological strain of thought. There are always trouble-makers in all groups. The solution: don't engage and leave well alone. Give them no reason to retaliate using violence. That's exactly what a lot of these despicable individuals are looking for in these protest marches. I would argue that the left were mainly responsible for this violence. They knew exactly what the outcome to this protest was going to be given the clash of ideology between both camps. People have an instinctual identification with their race and ethnic background. This is just a fact of human nature, it's neither good nor bad. When white people colonized Africa they brought their culture with them, and it was eventually rejected by African peoples because they did not recognize it as their own. Black people have been in the U.S. for hundreds of years, have all the same rights as every other group, yet black identity movements are on the rise. Why? It's because that's just how human beings are. They band together based on race and culture. They have a deep need for roots and traditions and stories about their ancestors. There is nothing inherently wrong in wanting to acknowledge and respect this aspect of human nature. It is a logical fallacy to assume that because someone wants to preserve their race and ethnic past, it means that they think other ethnicities and races are inferior to them. All it means is that they care about their own, in the same way people care about their families more than the families of others. The story of the West is to a large extent the story of White people with a few very notable Jewish contributions, which I am personally happy to include as I greatly admire Jewish culture. To ignore this is simply to deny reality. The Chinese didn't build Gothic churches, we did. That doesn't make them worse, it makes them different. Chinese culture is special in its own way, and the Chinese know this. They are not advocating any kind of multicultural mayhem in their country, and good for them. Everyone does nothing but criticize Identitarians for their "hate" when actually it's people who want to do away with race and ethnicity that hate. They hate their past, they hate their roots, they hate their countries and if they are consistent in their positions, they hate the very idea of culture all across the globe. I think the differences we have are important, and more to the point, our instinct to identify with our ethnic heredity is not going to disappear just because it's uncomfortable to post-enlightenment views of the world. We need to be honest about our feelings, loyalties, and deepest urges. Violence is a product of denial and repression in this case. The denial of the importance of identity.

I normally agree with Ben, but I just dont with the whole 'alt-right' thing. This crisis that is occurring is a direct representation of the immaturity that has existed, here, in Social Media for years. When the average commenter disagrees with something or someone, their direct course of action is cursing and derogatory. When the average activist disagrees with another group, their immediate response is morally unjust prejudice. Where is the middle ground? Ben, asked where were the police. I looked a little on U tube and found out that a lot of the police were dispersing the Unite to Right rally people. This was well planned ahead and the Unite the Right had a court order to have the event at the site of the monument. The police shut down the event..So while all the people were dispersing they run into Antifa and that is where the trouble stirred up. This was set up from the beginning...Most of the violence could of been avoided if the police were actually trying to separate the two groups...Why did they give the court order for the rally to begin with?
