There are family dynamics like this in real life. One member gets dismissed as "crazy" or "someone who starts drama" when it's actually a different family member who's actually sick. The others scapegoat the "crazy" one while they enable the behavior of the really sick one.

Yes the scape goat or sometimes black sheep is a family dynamic discussed in psychology. Where the family will pin all of its problems on one child, usually the one that is acting out in an obtuse manner. When in reality the issues are other members of the family, or the entire family as a whole.

The role of the brother is very interesting. I liked the beginning twice as much when re-watching! The brother obviously hates what he is and realizes what they're doing is wrong. Hence Jen tells him he doesn't have to be there and can leave. Yet he chooses to stay because he can't resist his inner hunger. And he seems to hate that about himself.
@brettzforeman Жыл бұрын
I got a more hypocritical vibe from the brother. Like he didn't show up until RIGHT before dinner because he didn't want to enjoy any small talk with the family, and how he acted exasperated whenever Jen acknowledges truthful accounts of past events. However, the minute Caroline shows up covered in Tim's blood, he IMMEDIATELY asks to be excused from the table so he can go feast on his remains. Tim isn't hateful of himself, but he prefers to live in delusion as much as possible. He doesn't acknowledge what he is until he's hungry and it's time to eat.

The gaslighting, building with the tension, and that one moment where I just started to doubt Jen, myself, and then it all comes to a head, perfect horrific conclusion. I especially love the foreboding throughout, how Jen makes the 'you're perfect' comment, how upset she is at James for no discernible reason, the comment about finding David's body looking like 'the animals got to him'. This is so wonderfully twisted and truly masterful. I hope it gets the attention it deserves.

What I was trying to figure out after my first viewing was why the ashes took the particular shape they did. It's clear that Derek's ashes are on a mantle directly across from Jen and Shirley. Based on everybody's conversations, it sounds like Derek was killed by an extremely hungry Caroline after Jen scared Caroline's date into leaving with his life. The ashes fall in a sort of T formation, though, stretching out towards BOTH ends of the dinner table along its center. After revisiting with a closer eye the moment when the ashes fall, however, it's more clear that BOTH twins are standing at each end of the dinner table. This suggests that Derek does not blame Shirley for what happened to him, but that he lays blame on both of the twins. It may have been Caroline who killed him, but both twins ate him and he holds both of them responsible. It sounds, also, like the confrontation in the kitchen is what set Derek off. He couldn't abide what they said about Jen, so he spilled his ashes and ruined their fake dinner so he could remind his whole family what really happened to him. You can see that Caroline and James respond very differently. Caroline looks up defiantly, while James is really cast down by this reminder that his father hasn't forgotten what they did to him.

@guiaavesani66466 ай бұрын
This was so well done. Bravo. When describing dysfunctional family dynamics we often refer to a person/s as battling their inner demons. Alcoholism, addiction , mental illness , child abuse. This film portrays the idea of physical-literal manifestation of those demons. What really stood out for me was Shirley (Mums) resignation to protect what she has created , two monsters , who she ultimately has to take responsibility for at the expense of Jenny who is not just a scapegoat , but a sacrificial lamb .Shirley’s has made a choice to make Jenny the family stain . Ironically an anagram for “saint” . To create a distraction on what is the obvious real stain , one that is bloody and messy . And in the end , she says “I will be up in a bit to help clean up” . A lovely metaphor for the codependent , always cleaning up other people’s messes and returning everything to a semblance and normal, and scrub and wash away the real horror . Then at the end when she mouth feeds Jenny her medication , she reveals herself for the first time by saying “this will help you forget “. She is basically admitting to Jenny that what has happened in front of her is indeed real, and not her delusions; however, it’s better to take the pill and to forget .

Also I found this to be very representative of what it's like dealing with narcissists. They gaslight you to thinking you are the crazy ones. This family was basically doing a smear campaign on the good one. The part I didn't understand was if mom was human or not. I feel she was because she had given birth to the good one but maybe made a deal with something sinister for the other two. Also I took it that the dad was pointing at who killed him by using his ashes but then got confused at the end as something other than the hatchlings was eating Tim...so was dad really dead or was that image the family projected and he was upstairs eating Tim...but then why was the good one upset about what they had done to dad?

I wanted her to help the guy so bad, idk why it's so scary to me the idea of trying so hard to get someone to believe you but they won't. I want a part two where she saves the guy! And we find out more about the twins and maybe the psychology of the mom and why she feels the need to protect them. A lot could be done with this story line, many avenues could be explored. I thought this was such a great short and it was such a pleasure to see Luke Newberry from "in the flesh" acting in this. The only thing I wish ALTER would stop doing though is putting spoilers in the thumbnail. I was quite sure that the siblings were some kind of carnivorous creatures, however the element of doubt is what adds to the tension. Seeing the daughter soaked in blood in the thumbnail kinda spoils that....

Thanks so much for watching & really happy to hear you enjoyed, Upstairs. I have reached out to the powers that be about the thumbnail, but I’ve never received a response, but I totally agree. Oh and yes, both Luke & In the Flesh are awesome.

My Guess - mom and younger daughter are human. Older siblings (twins) are some bird-human hybrid creature. The younger daughter says she was a surprise (parents didn't think they could have kids) and they were "hatched". The older daughter lures people (or just men) to the house. Gets them to go upstairs where something kills them so they can feed. Like how mother birds do. They keep the younger daughter drugged up to "forget" and not spill their secret. I wasn't sure if the father was really dead, or he was the thing upstairs, but I think he was human like mom and younger daughter and was killed (accident or on purpose), and it's something else upstairs killing.

There was a movie recently, it might've been called Hatched or Hatchling; I didn't see it but saw a video of someone discussing it. A neglected girl finds an egg and takes care of it. It hatches, and is bird-like, but as it gets older, it starts to look more and more like the girl; to where at the end I think you can't tell them apart. It looked pretty interesting and I keep meaning to see it for myself.

@@daniellevaughn4598absolutely love this❤. The bird thing is new to me, but adore the visuals. Have to be honest, they’re not bird-hybrids, but they’re definitely not human where as Shirley, Jennifer and Derek (when he was alive) are … the rest - NAILED IT!😊

Thought it was a great short, but anyone who says they didn't see the twist obviously didn't see the thumbnail of the blood soaked smiling sister for this video. It was literally one of the last shots. I do wish Alter would put a placeholder or a different photo from the movie. It'd be so much impactful, it's a shane because had I not seen it then it would have been a surprise. Great film though spoiled by Alter.
@philliptrow3330 Жыл бұрын
True. That was out of my control to be honest, although I guess the logic is to use the most gruesome thumbnail to entice people in … just a shame, as you say, it kinda gives the whole thing away. Thanks so much for watching though, really appreciate it 👍

This one gets a solid 6.8. I feel like this is one of those that would be sooo good if it were an actual movie. The plot twist would have been awesome to watch if we really went a whole hour thinking she was actually crazy and jealous of her sister than BAM. A lot had to be crammed into such a short amount of time it didn’t do it justice. Great job overall! Writing is very creative!

Great job! I love the actors....great chemistry together, and the "sister" (that had the boyfriend) was spot on and had the creepiest of smiles and laughs!! Tbh though, I'm not sure how "Dad" helped her realize anything by dumping out on the dining room table...? Anyone know this? I obviously can conclude what happened upstairs, but just not sure how Dad confirmed their families secret. :)
@philliptrow3330 Жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching and enjoying. In the dining room, Derek finally musters the energy to reach out from the other side and use his ashes to point towards the guilty parties (Caroline & James) therefore confirming to Jennifer that she isn’t deluded and the twins are … well, not human!😮

1:20 - 2:20 hold so much more meaning the second time watching. the gaslighting is crazy. and how she calls the dinner a ritual, that there will be a new boyfriend in a couple of months/ victim. mom says her sister is not a monster. which she is. Jennifer calls him perfect after hearing that he has no family. the perfect victim because no one would be looking for him. and later on when they're arguing in the kitchen and she's holding the knife, she starts believing their lies for a moment. the siblings say if they turn the crime in, they would go down too because they hid the body. but the dads urn was full -they never said who's body they hid... the detail and story line is INSANE i love this!

My idea is that the parents believed they could not conceive and made a demonic deal to have two children and Jenna was born a few years later after this deal was made.

Absolutely bang on (although the youngest Saint is called Jennifer 😉) Shirley & Derek really wanted to be parents, thought they couldn’t conceive, so used ‘other means’ to have a family … then suddenly Jennifer came along a few years later & suddenly it wasn’t just the dinner guests that were at risk. 😶
