It's so uncommon to see the American west and horror coupled together, but having grown up there, it's a setting rife for mystery, danger, and chills during those cold, desolate desert nights. This makes this particular story one of my favorites from Howard!

I hear ya, and surprise: Vampire and horror westerns have been a popular part of the cultural landscape for quite a long time now across a wide variety of media. Happy to provide recommendations of some highlights if you enjoy this genre.

One of REH's best stories, blending Howard's affinity for fantasy with his love for the regional history of his native Texas. A typical hallmark of Howard's fiction is featured here---his hero defeats a supernatural menace by dint of his own sheer physical strength and desperate courage.

A Robert E Howard horror Western. What is not to love? The title reminded me of HP Lovecraft's epic The Mound which, like "The Horror From the Mound" has been (very) well-adapted by our talented hosts. Excellent again, HorrorBabble.

Notice that it doesn't f**king sparkle. It would seem that if you want to get rid of a vampire, it is a cowboy you want. First Quincey Morris takes down Dracula, now this.
@geraldburke51473 жыл бұрын
Stoker wrote a sequel to Dracula..because the Count survived the first books ending where Quincey drove a steel blade into the coffin bound Count chest who then turned to dust and vanishes... That's not how you kill a vampire, much less the king of their kind. There are several ways to destroy the undead, but steel to the heart is not one of them...

I was pleasantly surprized when the hero punched the sh*t out of vampire insteat of screeching and trying to run away. But then i remembered the author is Robert E. Howard, author of Conan "stab it first ask questions later" the Barbarian.

Fantastic accents and acting/narration! I hadn't expected this one to scare me as much as it did. I could feel the deep fear as his desperation and anger boldly led him into that dark riverbed, to suddenly realize at the worst moment, "Whoa, this is dark and scary!" I mean, haven't we all been there? Well, minus the promise of treasure and creeping, ancient ghouls ....

A pity the reactions for "Skull-Face" are turned off. I always had difficulties with laymen describing the "so called" habit-forming effect of, for instance, Hashish... The hallucinatory effects of Hash,weed and Opiates (also Morphine and Heroine) are non to neglect-able. And smoking (or eating) Hash or weed does NOT result in an Physical Addiction like with Opiates as mentioned above. I have been using THC(on and off) for decades and never ever did I have had any withdrawal symptoms; even after months and months of daily use and sudden abstinence ....!!! The same with the Story"Hydra" by Henry Kuttner , (read by one of your collega: Edward E. French). here the effects are imaginary too.... Ah well, ... One day people with experience will correct that slight overlook in stories of otherwise great writers. In my account the greatest genre writers are.... The Following People...People like August Derleth, Linn Carter, H.Kuttner , R. Bloch, C.A. Smith, Fritz Leiber , but also Brian Lumley, Ramsey Campbell, Frank Belknap Long, A Scott Glancy, Karl Edward Wagner, and last but not least Laird Barron, T.E.D. Klein, Charles Stross, Molly Tanzer and Ann K. Schwader, Have been marvelous in keeping the Cthulhu Mythos very ALIVE... Maybe you could do "The Fairground Horror" by Brian Lumley. I've heard it read in German so maybe it's easy to get permission. Anyway, as usual, thanks a million for your excellent reading and choices of the stories...And also as usual,... all the best from the city called Hoorn in Noord Holland - Nederland -(the Netherlands, (Here a city can have as little 50.000 or 70.000 inhabitants and still be an official City...!!!))
