Sometimes especially in XC I think you can easily and quickly find yourself in stuck in a no-man's-land scenario neither able to safely bail out nor able to come back and make a save either. Some riders just hang on and hope things will soon calm and sometimes it works and sometimes it has horrific results. I'm big on perfecting the emergency bailout manoeuvre to the point of it being almost an involuntary response but rode without tack for years as a kid and still prefer the least amount wherever possible. Shit goes wrong, brain engages the non-recoverable evasive manoeuvre alarm and you go *Feet out and jump the fuck off* Lost an old friend and brilliantly talented rider who was caught up and dragged by her horse for several minutes the biggest irony being the early version of safety stirrups she had that were felt to have done more harm than good. Had she been in standard irons chances are she may have fallen off clean at least much sooner. Wherever you can and as soon as you can - get off. Same thing I've seen people do which is hang on to reins or a lead rope for dear life when they're on the ground and being dragged by their horse like a John Wayne stunt double. Let go of the reins FFS. The guy I saw dragged halfway across a field holding onto a lead rope we'd already shortened and knotted to avoid getting tangled up if the horse legged it which he was in a habit of doing. The shortened rope meant he was literally right under its feet and horse was in his own field not headed straight for rush hour traffic on the motorway. Have "LET IT GO.... LET IT GO!!!" in my head now. One to bring out for the next person we see refusing to let it go when they can't hold it back anymore. *Let the horse rage OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOONNN!!! The lead rope is shortened up anyway*

A cowboy buys a horse from the town pastor. The pastor explains, “To make the horse go, you gotta yell, ‘Thank God!’ And to make it stop, yell, ‘Hallelujah.’” The cowboy rides away. He rides all day and starts to nod off in the saddle when he notices he is about to ride straight over a cliff. Searching his memory, he yells to the horse, “Hallelujah! Hallelujah!” The horse grinds to a stop just at the edge of the cliff. The cowboy wipes the sweat off his forehead. “Phew!” the cowboy sighs. “Thank God!”....

After reading some of the comments, figured I would weigh in. The obvious problem was the saddle slipping. Whether loose girth, too much padding, or the horses confirmation, I don't know. As for the rider, once on the side of the horse there is not much to do as far as control goes. I see it as this rider wanted to compete, so was doing everything they could to try to right the situation. The rider at a couple of points could have just dismounted, but that would have counted as a fall and eliminated her from the rest of the course right then. They were trying to right the saddle and finish the course. They took the fall rather than quit.
