Every situation is different. I generally show the best parts or the parts most interesting about horse logging but the daily grind is generally just a calmer and more steadily paced rhythm.

I very much appreciate when you narrate and telling us what’s going on today I sat and watched you pull those three large trees up on the truck I wondered do you not have a lift machine like Jim has? I’ve never seen you. I haven’t watched you very often so I didn’t know if you had one of or not or just lift the logs up and put them on the truck OK keep talking we like hearing your kind, gentle voicethank you😅

When I was a kid back in the 50’s they had horse and mule pulling contests at the county fairs around our area. My dad’s friend had a pair of horses (I’m not sure of the breed, but they were huge to me) that always were winners. He trained them by hooking them up to the front of his big grain truck and having them pull it. He would have someone get on the brakes and they wouldn’t be able to move it. When they had tried hard and the dirt was flying, they would let off the brakes just enough to let them have a victory. He never used a whip, just talked to them. I think he was training them psychologically to believe that if they worked hard enough, they could pull anything. Sort of a good lesson in life. At the fair they had a big sled with weight on it. The man driving the team would back them up to the sled where there was a type of hitch with a big steel ring. The team’s tree had a similar hitch and when the two hitches were mated up, a large steel pin would be dropped into the hitch. The horses were already tense and ready to pull. When they heard that pin drop, it was their signal to hit it.

Love the talking. Most of us don’t know anything about horses or logging. Hell most of us probably don’t go outside much. I would appreciate knowing the difference between oak and Mable trees. I’m not stupid, just a 56 yr old retired nurse. I just love watching and learning.

Love the channel. I've never really watched draft horses work except at the county fairs. It's much more interesting to watch them do their routine work with you. It's good for the horses and you to do a good hard pull occasionally to learn the limits and capabilities of the team. But I agree that all out effort pulls will burn out a team quick. I enjoy watching them obey your commands. They're a lot smarter than some people I've worked with...LOL

I live in central Virginia and I have seen advertising for horse logging and wondered how this was accomplished. Your video answered my questions. Horse logging seems easier on the environment and land and if the horses are well taken care of it a great alternative to mechanical skidding. I enjoyed watching and learning what you do and appreciate how well you care for your beautiful horses. When I decide to cut timber on my property, I'll be hiring someone who uses horses to remove the logs. I look forward to other videos.

Such gracious beings work horses, and they are super clever. Used to ride work horses when young, they took well care of us but when they got fed up with us they faked a limp or refused to go any further, they were great teachers. If I could wish for one thing, that would be a nice wee ramp when off loading them, just to avoid them straining or stepping into a hole. Apart from that I think you are doing a great job and show respect to your animals. Good on you. We should use horses more in forestry, they destroy less on the land, it may take a bit longer but so much better for nature. This is what these horses were bred for as well. Shame to see the work horses disappear because we don't use them. I love what you do, and to be honest, those complaining don't know nothing about horses. x

Amazing how team approaches cart, which they can see from that position, then wheel together to be hitched. When the righthand horse is simultaneously turning and stepping each foot over the pole HE CANNOT SEE IT WELL, with the blinkers obstructing side vision and the front vision rather obscured by the small natural "blindspot" horses have low and in front.Meanwhile left horse sidles precisely into position WITHOUT crossing pole. Which he also cannot see well. Wow. Both horses absolutely aware of their bodies and the equipment as it exists in space at that moment. Impressive.

To an old fellow see and hearing a young man getting out there and teaching . While down the road it will cause competition in the market place , besides that you demonstrate horse long is not just about old fellow dreamers living in the past history . Horse logging is still a viable business and sustainable forestry !

In my opinion, there’s a lot to be said fer a feller that don’t dock tails nor use cruppers. Never seen the need fer either. Good lookin hosses ye got. They all Belgians ye got? Enjoy yer videos, with no screaming or beating or jerkin. An old feller that I worked with back in the 70’s told me about the bits that his neighbor used to train his teams with…barbed wire doubled a couple of times. Said the weight of the reins controlled em.
