I have a deep admiration for you and anyone who works a trade like this.A man I follow in upstate N.Y Jim Gordon. Working horses with Jim just broke his scapula which has shut down his operation which is he and his wife.😢

My great grandfather, Fred Bessette, was killed hauling cordwood out of the woods above our family ranch in Montana in 1901. His body was found two or three days after the wreck, and no one knew for sure what exactly happened, although it appears that the reach pole between the front and rear axels broke, letting the crosswise logs fall down, spooking the team. A man on horseback found Fred, who had crawled out of the trail and leaned against a stump and died there. One horse was found tangled up in a snarl of brush and saplings in the creek, and the other horse, still in harness, was never located as far as I know. Fred's fellow woodcutters paid his funeral bill with cordwood. So, boys, that's some of my heritage. I'm an old man now, and I'm still bucking up and splitting good-sized Doug fir logs for stove wood. Be careful out there, you all.

Related story of people working on their own. My sister in law Daddy was a dairy farmer born in Holland. He brought his family to Canada to escape Adolf Hitler. There was 7 children. 2 girls,5 boys. They had a three seater out house. They ,for a long time did manual milking which had to be done twice a day.Well one day their father was on roof of barn doing repairs and fell and died. The children kept up the dairy till got automatic milkers. Ended with the joungest son working the farm.

I met Jeff at a plow day in Melber, Ky. He is a great guy with some fine horses. I'd love to work with him for a week or two just to learn a few things.

That's a great team of horses and you can tell they have been doing logging for a long time. I love they way he loads logs on the wagon using a horse and chains.

It will never make me happy to see what is often irreplaceable old growth or mature trees being chopped down, but unfortunately it's a market that will continue to exist and it's nice to see real, rewarding work still being done by real people without relying completely on fossil fuels.

I would rather see a team of horses logging than a skidded, this was a great video . I enjoy a clean woods not a mess where you have to bring a dozer in to clean up the big mess .
