In this horse riding lesson, I show you how I warm myself and my horse up before we get into the working section of our training session. A correct warm-up is a vital part of horse training basics and it is of great value for older horses, stiff horses or even green horse training. It should include exercises for horses and I also add exercises for the rider as we should strive to be supple too. If you want to know how to school a horse you need to start here!

I believe that if I expect my horse to be supple I should be too. This video shows you how I work on both of these things in the first 10 minutes of any ride. 🙂

I always start with a long walk on my horse but how silly never thought of using the time to loosen myself up and just sat there like a lump on him. Great video.

Great warm up! I love how you're working on creating lateral flexion before even asking him to come into contact - I've been told to immediately start warm up in a frame with my TB but find taking my time working up to that works best for his relaxation levels, so it's really good to see another perspective!

I find that as I create lateral flexion they will then come into the contact. I don't "put" them there. I think of those exercises as soft stretching for the horse. 🙂

I love this! Thank you for posting. It's nice to see someone else also start everything at the walk. I start all of my work in the walk, including longing my horses. It gives them a chance to loosen up before asking them to work. Much respect! I also like to work on me too. If we aren't loose and in proper position, how can we expect them to work with us when we make their job more difficult. I used to tell my one mare- this isn't all about You ya know.... **Edited to add- Cowboys always walked their horses the first mile out and the last mile back. People forget this small step. It was a good way to warm their horses up and cool them down, but also taught them not to rush back to the barn.

Love that - "this isn't all about you ya know" 😆 You are right - if we expect them to work to the best of their ability we need to work to our best 😊

I really love your videos! I've watched several the last week. Your nature and horsemanship are fantastic! I am a lifetime horse person, who took 10 years off to start a career and family. Now here I am, rusty and 75lbs heavier... and NOT the rider I used to be. I have evented, ridden timed events, started a couple colts, and ridden 35 miles in a day! Now I struggled to make it through 30 mins because I'm so disappointed in my lack of ability. I have a green gelding and need help being a better communicator! Keep the videos coming. I need all the tips you can offer!

What are the cues for going around the haunches? And do you ever go on a circle with flexion and counter flexion?

We were taught as kid's to earn up properly and I suppose it's stuck in my brain but it's not something that seems to be taught now.

Yes it’s very sad. There is a lot of basic horsemanship that is not taught now. 😔

So, as the horse is a prey animal, they are born to go from sleeping, to full flight at a gallop if a predator appears. Hmmmm, no time to "warm up" then is there? What's the difference?
@BasicHorseTraining
@BasicHorseTraining Жыл бұрын
No there is no time to warm up then but they are in a flight reflex running for their lives. This reflex only lasts for a short time and it doesn’t doesn’t happen every day When we are working them it is our duty to do no harm to them and all the scientific evidence shows that if we don’t warm the joints and muscles up correctly we run the risk of the horse “breaking down”.
