Back in the 1930's my Grandfather decided that my Fathers favourite riding horse had to be put down because it had a condition where the front hooves kept splitting vertically up towards the leg. The local vet said it was caused from poor bloodlines and there was no cure. My Father was devastated. That was his horse of choice. He heard about some rubber shoes that could be bought that would mitigate the condition and he found out where to buy them from a catalogue store so he ordered a set. The cost was very dear, about a months wages in those days, but he was determined if there was any way to save this animal he was going to do it. The shoes arrived in the mail and the local farrier was summoned to put them on. They did what they were supposed to do and my Father kept buying new shoes as necessary, always paying from his own pocket Three years later the second world war started and my Father enlisted in the Air Force. While he was gone to basic training, the horse needed new shoes. My Grandfather never bothered to contact my Dad and wouldn't pay for those special shoes so the horse was put down. My Father never forgave him for that but always said at least the horse had three extra years....... I always think about that when I think of my Dad. Although there were times when it may not have shown, he was a good, kind, and decent man.

As a kid, I saw my dad "fix" a horse who had a vertical split in one hoof. He welded two side plates to the shoe, and a front toe plate where the crack was. Then he squeezed the hoof together with a carpenter's vise, and drove the shoe into place. Took a long time to grow out, but the horse was able to work, and showed no lameness or signs of pain as long as he kept that shoe on.

Wow. The poverty there is great. Maybe you could start a non profit to provide them with proper tools - at least some rasps and maybe real horseshoeing nails. I think the tire shoes are cool if they can be cut of an even thickness. Places like that they have to make do, but it's difinitely hard on the horses

Very cool that you guys donated your time and experience while working with what the locals have and not so much pointing out what they "should have". I have to admit watching some of this footage made me winch as they trimmed and smacked away with their version of clinching. Can you imagine what the horses back home would do if you clinched them like that?! Hahahaha! A different world and different ways for sure. Very interesting footage, all of it. Thanks for posting it and I really enjoy all of your posts. Keep up the great work.

@SuperSkyhorse4 жыл бұрын
It's horrible to watch, and it's worse when you think about why this is happening. They don't treat their horses like this out of malice. They simply lack education, and even when they see obvious things, like wounds on the skin, they don't have many options, since they are poor. They have two choices: hope it heals while they continue working the horse; or they stop working the horse at which point their income disappears. When you barely have enough to feed yourself and your family, you have to make some tough choices. As cruel as it sounds, people would choose to feed their kids and spouse over a horse.

In an area in China they make a bench to rest the horse's foot on and cover the top of the bench with a car tire. While crude, its more stable than having someone hold the horses foot. If you could contact someone there, that could be a better option for them.

I like how you gathered a group at the end lol. I just imagined that kid was telling you about his day. I felt so bad about that one horse. The pain it must've been in for that long. I was a bit confused thinking it was likely an animal attack but wondering why it had healed a bit. I didn't imagine it had been left in that state for so long. I don't necessarily blame the people...we don't know their circumstances and they were probably devastated to have such a valuable member put down. It's honestly just sad for everyone.... I hope you guys have made some headway in the two years since this was posted. I tried to see if the group you were part of is on Amazon Smiles, so at least I could donate through getting necessities for my household as I'm able. I didn't find it though. @Nasauniverse0014 жыл бұрын
The Brooke Horse and Donkey foundation takes donations. I think these farriers were they to find out how to improve the practises, and assess what would be needed. The rubber shoes were ok, it was just the placing of the nails. So they discovered a way of improving that without having to provide anything else. That was all they needed. Of course they could do with new tools and new nails and maybe that will come, but in the immediate future, these ponies got their shoes on in a better way.
