Hi Rick. I'm really sorry to hear about your gun channel. I am a horse person, but learned so much on your gun channel. You definitely have a lot of experience in the military and being a police officer. I respect that and thank you. With all the years of experience that you've had, your channel was very interesting because of the inside knowledge and experience you have. you are kind enough to give us your input on current events, your past experience, and gun knowledge. I don't think one video was out of line in anyway. Thanks for all the time and energy you put in to all of the videos. PS my horse is now on 24/7 outdoor board because of you. And she is much happier. Thank you. Edit: it may not seem like it sometimes, but you definitely make a difference. I usually don't comment, but realize that just because people don't comment you are still making a difference for horses and for people on your gun page.

Rick has been so much help to a lot of us, and hearing of different mishaps (Miss Chicken, KZbin Censorship, etc) is extremely disheartening, because, especially related to KZbin, you never know what might get taken down next :( A side note on the topic of your horse- as soon as I move my little filly she'll be in a nice grassy pasture further north so I can imagine she'll be excited. She was abused and stolen from her mother at a young age before I got her, so I'm doing my best to make sure she can be as much of a natural horse as I can afford without just letting her run wild 😂. Congrats on your horse being super happy with their pasture! It's always funny to watch them get excited about grass, especially after a snowy winter!

Kade 1108 thank you! Good luck with you and your horse and finding a nice pasture. I am lucky enough to find a place that has automatic waterers that are heated. So even in our cold Wisconsin winters I won't even have to worry about frozen water. Nice big tall walk in shelters and it's not over crowded. I found a great place 😊

OK big safety tip here, and going to save you a fine if DOT pulls you over and does an inspection. Test your breakaway switch. hook everything up pull the pin out of the safety switch and try and pull ahead. see if your brakes come on. of all the trailers I've pulled on well over half of them the safety breakaway didn't work. the fine in Alberta Canada is 375.00 and they can park you until its fixed. the pin just pushes back in. if anything breaks while testing it needed replacing. and make sure where you hook up the breakaway cable it isn't to anything that will come away from the truck, I've seen people hook them up to the hitch. The hitch type on your trailer rick is called a bull nose and thanks for the video I've hauled all sorts of livestock in everything from two horse trailers up to 52 foot cattle liners and I have to say your advice here is bang on. as usual. and get your tires re-torqued once in awhile. sitting and up and down temps can cause lug nuts to loosen.

Funny you posted this one. This weekend we will be towing 3 horses on a trailer that has a weight distribution system. Finding a hitch with a drop for our 6" lifted truck to keep the trailer level was a nightmare. Found one at a camper/RV place. Paid out the nose for the drop hitch, but the horses will be safe, and I know more about hitches than I thought I needed to know.

That's a "bulldog" coupler on your trailer. Very nice and strong! For those who have the cheaper couplers, do yourself a favor and don't hit it when you back up to it. Otherwise you'll beat the coupler out of round, and it will be hard to mount and dismount.

Make sure every year you go through and do your reg. maintnance, make sure your spare isnt dry rotted, cross your chains, replace your flooring if needed be, make sure you know the weight your pulling and that everything is correct with what your using for a vehicle, tow package, like the right axle ratio, and trailer tongue weight. just because your truck can do the speed limit around a corner doesnt mean you would be able to with a full load around a corner with horses in it. You have to use your brains sometimes. make sure you give yourself plenty of stopping room, and pay close attention to other drivers. Most drivers try to pull out in front of you because they think that it will take forever for you to pass and they get impatient.

Hey Rick, if you have pulled that trailer with the 2 5/16” tongue with a 2” ball, it will wear out the inside of the tongue because of banging from starting and stopping! I would take that ball hitch by hand and place it into the tongue and check the play back and forth, side to side!! If there’s more than 1/8” to 1/4” play, then the tongue is getting worn!! Hope this helps!!

We hauled with a smaller ball unknowingly too when I got my first aluminum trailer some years back. We went to purchase and pick the trailer up, and 5 miles down the road we went over some railroad tracks and LOST THE TRAILER ON THE TRACKS. Luckily I packed all the balls and slips from home and swapped them out...sitting on the tracks. Ever since then I've been anal about trailer set up and maintenance. Now another issue I've had in the past is valve stem failure. I like to replace them every two years.

U mention few times about cars, did u ever think about doing videos about car fixing -basic things enough that person needs to know not to get taken advantage of by mechanic ? I wonder if it’s somthing u would consider and if there would be any interest? . U videos are very informative and entertaining and without any unnecessary bs.

its a goose neck it sits on a ball like a pull trailer. fifth wheel there is a pin coming down. hit the brakes the trailer brakes weren't working or weren't set up high enough so when he hits the brakes the trailer pushes the truck. thats my guess ive had it happen to me when logging.

Hey Rick, have you made a video on what age a horse is able to be ridden? I've always heard 4-5 years old. I have a horse buddy who just got a 2 1/2 year old and wants to ride him and I'm trying my best to convince her to wait. She knows better, and is even the type that wears a helmet etc, but seems to throw caution to the wind if she wants something enough. Thinks it's only weight that is the concern and if she loses a little weight she thinks this young horse will be able to carry her and not be injured 0_o
@johsPha
@johsPha 7 жыл бұрын
horses stop growing at age of 5 and 4 year old should be enough to ride but it should't be anything too rough since they are still growing.
@dkeith45
@dkeith45 7 жыл бұрын
That's what I've always heard. That horses cartilage is not fully hardened on many areas etc. Reason why some people think younger horses can be ridden is because of race tracks where two and three year olds are raced with jockeys, and get the idea that since the jockeys are always small people, that weight on the back is the only factor. But racetracks seem to care little for the long-term health of horses and instead focus on short term profits. IE money.

horse back bones do not fully develop until 5, so very light riding maybe, but these idiots today are riding at two and destroying bone development, but most them sell the horse so they don't care.

Think Like A Horse Rick, I would rather do ground work, sack the horse out, possibly get him used to a saddle. I feel the benefits to both me and the makes things like that first ride would be less stressful not to mention what the.horse and I could learn.

Rick, you covered it all pretty well. You lightly mentioned *BOLT* grades. Stronger is better which is obvious. One should know the Head markings on the bolt. Boltdepot.com has come good information in this area. Don't assume the correct *Grade* of bolts were installed, someone could have cut corners. LOW COST FIX. Not to be a Safety Sally, but if it's easy and low cost why not. { screen capture and crop can give you a picture for your web page ) www.boltdepot.com/fastener-information/materials-and-grades/bolt-grade-chart.aspx Proper bolt diameter for holes and lock washers part it as well. Captain Obvious I know, but some folks are not stupid engineers looking at this kind of details. The boys with slide rules cranking out numbers, think 4X min over rating. You can look up guidelines. Guessing 4X.

also trailer tires are bad, they wear fast and explose rather often. I put light truck tires of sufficient weight rating on my trailer . never could get 10 000km out of trailer tires, but with with truck tires only change them when they get too old. They also brake better in snow and are more stable. Best trailer upgrade.

Tires, breaks, floor boards, structural rust, all important considerations. Don't be stupid. Also, make sure if you're going to leave any of your trailers sitting for a long time, keep the tires out of the mud and ground (keep some pressure treated 2x6 under your tires). And keep the sun off them with some kind of shade. These two things will increase the life of your tires. And make sure your tires are inflated properly so the tire walls don't crack. I changed all my horse trailer tires and RV tires to at least a D rating. I have have had tires blow in the mountains and it's not fun. Spend the money and get D or E rated tires. That is 8 or 10 ply. My truck is diesel 3/4 ton with 10 ply tires but I've seen guys hauling horses in half ton or even smaller trucks with bad tires. An accident involving a trailer and horses is not an accident you ever want to have.

What do you think about a family, getting a horse when all they have ever done is, riding +they are beginners. I don't even think they have cantered before. and They are in a phase i call the "pony phase" they are very, very uneducated, and don't have a lot of knowledge when it comes to horses. they are thinking about buying a 7 year old gelding. yes they are that dumb.. they can't even longe a horse, and they want 3 people learning it on 1 young horse. They don't even know how to "sack out" a horse. they have never worked with a horse when it spooked, and they don't know how to work with the fear a horse have. I will give it 3 weeks before some one get hurt. What do you think?

Frederikke Løvschal not good. Everyone has to start somewhere but people should be researching and studying as much as a new parent does when having a 1st child. People think getting a horse is like getting a dog or cat and end up going over there league. I feel for the 7 year old horse. I don't mind someone who's green getting a horse because we all start pretty green but I wouldn't let my family buy a horse unless they researched horses and watch a ton of videos and has at least leased a horse or worked at another stable or something.
