Horses Fly 6,000 Miles in Anti-Slip Stables

It took a team of caretakers and Turkish Airlines staff to safely transport 63 horses from Chicago, Illinois, to Istanbul. For the more than 10-hour flight, these horses were housed in 21 specially designed stables. They featured anti-slip flooring, because according to veterinarians, horses are not sedated before a flight since they need to remain awake enough to balance on all four legs. Horse Racing Sense estimates overseas travel for a horse can “average from $8,000 to $30,000” each.

Flying a horse is really easy for the horse. I had mine flown over and she was fine. But when she travels in a trailer on road she falls over and can only travel loose in a lorry otherwise she falls over. Very strange animals because 95% of them have amazing sense of ballance.

i doubt she actually falls. plenty of horses just freak out over close confines while being driven in a van or trailer on roads, so they just lay down in the narrow stall and most owners mistakenly think they actually fall down; thats not the case. they feel more safe while laying down, perhaps to avoid viewing or feeling scenery or other cars etc whizzing by their heads which they dont like. Ive heard owners say oh she just kicks the stall a few times then lays down; she always does that when shes trailered. so not uncommon.

Turkish airlines and cargo is truly amazing and kind when it comes to traveling and transporting animals. I had a 16 hrs long flight and my dog’s weight and his cage exceeded the limit of the cabin, but once they saw how calm and friendly my dog was,they allowed him in cabin with me. Such a wonderful experience !

As cool as this new stable system is people act like transporting horses via airplane is new. One of my horses was born in Ireland and then flown over to the United States. It is quite impressive how they manage to stay calm with how much an airplane can rock though.

Apparently we sold some broodmares to the Turks. Can we expect to see Turkish-born champions more frequently on the American circuit in four years or so? Of course, winning grade one stakes races in Dubai will get you an invite to the American Triple Crown series. So that might be the plan, and we may not see them save for in May and October.
