Shoeing Ruby once more. The last video I took of her went almost viral with at present 7.7 million views!
The original video • Horseshoeing Ruby
Filmed with GoPro Hero5 black Camcorder amzn.to/2OrEuTs
PLEASE READ THE FAQ's BEFORE POSTING!!
1: Hot shoeing ensures a good fit.
2: No, it doesn't hurt the horse if it's shod correctly by a qualified registered person.
3: The horse is calm because it has been trained from birth to know there is nothing to fear.
4: The majority of horses these days are worked either under saddle or in harness and on hard man made surfaces, shoes protect the feet from wearing down too much and can add grip via studs in the shoes for competition animals.
5: Feral horses have particularly hard feet and manage them naturally by foraging, if they get sick they recover or die, it’s nature.
6: The average horse needs re-shoeing every 6-8 weeks
7: The bit I am nailing to has no nerves and is made of Keratin, the same as your finger nails and hair.
8: The burning smells just like burning hair. #GaryHuston #Blacksmithing #Farrier #ASMR #Horseshoeing #Fabrication #Ironwork #Hoofcare #welder #repairs #horse #farriery #engineering

I'll give my perspective on the views. But first, are the frogs on this horse huge? They seem much bigger than ours. The work, for those of us that sit behind a desk, is almost hypnotic. In a way, its soothing. You clearly know what you're doing and watching someone that does is pleasing. Now if you were to watch me try to do this it would be a whole different story. The wife tells me that she's impressed that you fold the nail back before pulling the shoe. She has to get on our farrier's apprentice to get him to do it and not tear up the hoof by pulling them through still bent. Here's to another 3.4M views :-D
@garyhuston
@garyhuston 6 жыл бұрын
swdweeb her frogs are quite big, nice and healthy, shows they are working well! Your wife is quite right to question that practice, it’s becoming popular with the younger farriers and not to be encouraged! When I was an apprentice back in the late 70’s it was drummed into us that finishing off ( clenching) was one of the most important parts of the shoeing process. You could dress a foot perfectly, you could fit the shoe perfectly, you could nail it on perfectly but if your finishing off was no good nothing would keep the shoe on! In my opinion if you can get the shoe off without raising the clenches then your finishing off is no good! If either of you decide to mention this to your Farrier make sure you watch out for flying hammers😂

Hey Gary, are you using liberty copper coated nails? I found that when we came out of winter and flies came about that they started sheering on the real active horses. Clips helped but I've been getting a lot of sheared nails. Went back to capewells and it's solved the issue for me.
@garyhuston

i've never had a problem with sheering from any nail makes but then we always use clips.
@JNacoustic

Gary Huston the only other time I've had the issue was with Delta nails about 15 years ago. They admitted to having a bad batch. I'm wondering if it was an odd batch. It was only the copper coated liberty lx50's that did it. Lots of popped clinches as well.
@KILLRAIN42
@KILLRAIN42 6 жыл бұрын
So what are the advantages/disadvantages of doing a hot shoe versus cold? Initially I just figured it was to get a better fit since you can actively adjust the shoe a little easier, but I feel like there's more to it. Also, this is the hot method right, or am I mistaken on that?
@DembaiVT
@DembaiVT 6 жыл бұрын
KILLRAIN42 this is the hot method. It is only better as the burn makes a little dent in the hoof so the fit is closer. But the hot method is not good for some horses (I don't know the rules about this but Ferriers know). A cold shoe can still be worked a bit it just takes more effort and requires the Ferrier to know their horse well so that the shoe can be shaped and cooled completely before putting it on.
