Hallo RC Fans . Our Club mate Peter finished his full composite HORTON
Twin EDF80mm. Powered by 2x80mm fans running on 6s each side. The design is an experimental from the year 1943 by the Germans in WW2.
Especially the model suffers from the fact that the rudder underneath the fuselage is very small which can give you a real hard time to fly this rare RC plane. Enjoy and please watch until the end since we filmed 2 flights.Let us know what you think , comment like and subscribe.
Sorry for the blurry footage taken from a mobile phone, you still get an idea how he was fighting to not loose it.
Repekt an Peter hast du super gemeistert.
Sorry das Video ist leider immer etwas verschwommen weil der Autofokus am Mobiltelefon nicht so richtig wollte. Viel Spass , abonniert und Daumen hoch würde uns freuen.

Yes we wish we could get it PNP too. I was not really interested until i saw how many really fly perfect and sucessful. There is hope aerotetris makes one in foam. Im really tempted to build one since the price is affordable and exiting to see it it flies well. Cant wait to see my friend fly his Horton again. Keep you informed.

Very Nice! A guy named Keith Shaw who really promoted electric flight in the 80's built a Horton Twin EDF with two Astroflight .035 Cobalt motors. He did a bungee launch but once it was up the performance was pretty amazing considering it was powered with brushed motors and nicad batteries. Keith also built a number of other scale electric models including a GeeBee R1 and I think a DeHavalind Mosquito. Glad to see your plane, it looks very well engineered.

We should be glad the Germans did not have a couple of hundred of these things in 1943. FWIW - the plane was made of plywood over a steel center frame. Also the 30mm cannon could have fired anti tank shells.

The concept design has, after about 90 yrs, returned (figuratively speaking) to where it originated, as a proof of concept model. It seems the German public schools were providing career-focusing "clubs" as extensions of regular curriculum. My Dad was president of his high school's radio club for the 3 of his 4 yrs. in that club. -Afterward he pursued electrical tech. and a related professional career. So I think such "clubs" are worth it. Recalling what I read about the Hortons and their school's model aircraft club, the adult mentor-director of the club related to the young club members, the greatest problem or challenges to aviation at the time, was in reducing control surfaces to absolute minimum for fuel and possible other maximum efficiencies. I think their idea won acclaim and recognition, such that a "pilotable" glider was built to test controllability and handling. The test pilots gave it low scores in that regard, with some noting that, at least as a glider, it was quite difficult! Thus the German aircraft industry lost interest in moving forward with producing full scale powered Hortons, until Germany reached the desperate circumstances of WW2 where everything had to be optimized, minimized etc.. I don't think the Hortons "copied" the idea. It's just a matter of a wing being about as far as one can go in minimizing, in order to maximize.

The HO-229 was the fighter version, the bomber version had 6 jet motors and could carry a payload of around 4000 kg of bombs with a range of about 5000 km. If these planes had come earlier in the war it would have been disasterous for the Allies and Russians.

During the time this craft was pattem designed, it was far ahead of its time, even surpassing the early 21st century, today it could be modified to dive in water, be a bomber, a fair size cargo & passanger ratio size airline, even a rocket carrier first stage, surpassing the issue, canister chem rockets face below the kamen.

Hello Rico & Peter. I think if Carlsberg® were making a Flying Wing, you two guys would be on their short list for test pilots! @04:42 my body started to go in the foetal position but you grabbed it back like a Champ! Seriously, do you think a larger scale, say 2x, 3x bigger would be easier to control? Having said that, I heard that the F-117 couldn't fly without it's Fly by Wire computer.. But was amazed when I saw a scale model being flown without that luxury! Respect!

@@TestFliteTVseams the CG is a bit off. It could be that the thrust line of the fans is not at the correct angle with the airfoil of the wing. If this is scratch built build one 1X bigger wich would make it fly better & wouldn't be so touchy ( squrly) to fly.

Not sure if this Horten 299 had the correct washout at the wing tips. This would increase stability a lot. The Horten's understood flyinh wing design better than anyone at the time. NASA has recently rediscovered the concept of (PRANDTL wing concept) proverse yaw. Those who have reproduced the Horten often overlook the changing angle of attack from root to wing tip.

As the "Stealth Fighter" of its day, it would have terrified the British radar operators, if the Germans had fielded such a craft, a little earlier. By the time they could have detected it, with the RADAR equipment of the day, the planes would have been in strike range, clearing the way, for more conventional prop planes, of the day.
