Jealous of your youth. I am 70 and running out of time and ability to do all I want to do in my garden. I failed to move as aggressively as I should have in my younger years. I am 73 and recovering from throat cancer. Please don't let worrying about your age stop you from enjoying life. We could still live 10 to 20 years! I am still planting in my garden. I am lucky because my grown children live close and help me do the heavy work every other Sat. I do a lot of container gardening and only add shrubbery and things I can prune standing up! Just find what works for you and continue gardening!

Never give up and never give in ! I’m an 82 yr old woman still digging and moving hosta, edging, cutting trees I can reach, pulling weeds 🤪biggest pain! Love it! By the end of fall, I’m exhausted! Every winter I say! “ I’m not doing that next yr” every Feb. I’m itching to get going! So, hang in there you have a long time ahead of you! Oh! By the way! I have osteoporosis in my back plus a upper fracture on my left hip, 2 broken bones in my outer left foot which caused a ball on the bottom in the area so I rock roll when I walk! Arthur in both hands, enlarged stomach hernia, 2 knee replacements! Don’t give up! My mother always said” can’t never could do anything”. I took that to heart! 😂 you got this! 👍👍 Do what you can! It makes you feel wonderful and everyday you’ll be doing a little bit more and before you know it! WOW! You’ve surprised yourself!

Oh how I would love to have a garden like this in my front yard. The paths, shrubs, small trees and flowers blooming everywhere, but alas it is not to be. Age, strength and funds are always a big issue. The look of a cottage garden is my dream. Maybe when I get to heaven the Lord will let me be in His gardens.

Tip: If you are in a neighborhood that has an association like me, just remove a little bit of front yard grass each year...and work fast to get the plants in so people are admiring the flowers, shrubs, etc., and not worrying about "what you are doing." LOL. In my neighborhood, we're not allowed to remove all grass, so have approximately 50 percent grass/50 percent plants instead. However, due to my design, it actually looks like 75% grass/25% plants. I use a battery operated mower for the small lawn, which saves me money on lawn maintenance service.

LOL good tip! I live in an HOA but they are not too worried about it as long as the yards are neat and well kept...Now if I took out most of my lawn that might be a different story. I did widen my front bed and added a new one along the driveway. Hoping to add one more this year....figured if I do a little each year and fill it up with pretty things they might not complain to me

Jim, thank you for all you and Steph do to reach us. You taught me about soil amendments for GA red clay years ago when I first discovered your channel while looking for information. My home built in 1967 on a 1/3 acre has original bermuda in the front and after years of using lawn services to try to keep it pristine, I have decided that I want it to be a full front yard garden like yours. Lord, help me! The number of hours I'm spending digging that grass up by hand are a practice in meditation! Not to mention all the bitter dock, poke salit, and ivy in the back yard! Do you feel my pain? But you two have inspired me and I am determined. Privet- gone! One down four to go!

Tornado blew out my van windows at Stennis. Tornadoes in Slidell tore up part of the town. Home and family ok. Just large branches hanging and some that fell. Second day without power. Good thing is the container plants I pulled up against the back of the house did well. Ready to get back at it once we deal with these unexpected detours.

I have never been happier than taking my lawn out in the front. I made paths and new beds that are alive with plants attracting insects! And I no longer get stress whenI hit the big box stores telling me I need to buy new grass seed, fertilizers and weed control!

Hi Jim (and Pam?), Glad you got rid of that small piece of turf. It didn't really have a purpose other than having room to plant annuals in a circle, but now you can plant out some nice perenials and make a great looking garden. The viburnum is a stunner along with your fragrant and colourful hawthorne. I'm doing a similar thing by cutting the undergrowth off shrubs and planting lower perenials underneath.......by following your steps. Love the idea of having mainly annuals with your veges. I think it makes more sense than sporadically mixing them in gaps....unless they complement the plant its near to. The drone gives us a great view of your alterations. Looking so good. I'm (very) gradually eroding the lawn. Eventually the only grass remaining will be paths between the shrub and mixed-border beds. BUT.. A thick, luxurious spread of lawn is a cool delight to unshod feet. And an absolute requirement for cloud watching with grandchildren.

Love fringe trees. Ours is shrubby like you mentioned and enjoys the north side where soil stays moist. It bloomed earlier than our Chinese variety last year. They’re both in full bloom now, along with Ninebarks.

Allow your garden to be YOUR garden. If you don't like spacing just dig it up and move it. I'm sure your garden isn't half as bad as you think it is....we tend to be our toughest critics. It's gardening, enjoy the never ending science experiment for what it is. Although it absolutely is possible to plant too closely I live by the though process.....no one spaces plants in nature....if you walk through any thicket you'll find plants literally growing through each other and doing great. Give yourself a pat on the back for even taking on the task of being a gardener and then cut yourself some slack.

Thank you for showing a native White Fringe Tree! I just planted one this spring, you don't see them in many videos or anywhere. Sort of a forgotten but wonderful little tree. The scent is lovely and it didn't have any transplant shock. I am expecting years of enjoyment from my sweet little fringe tree. And the bees discovered it day 1!

For your planters, you could get a water timer, some 1/2" poly hose to run out to them, and some 1/4" hose to connect in-line drippers to water them if you leave. You can run 30' of in-lines with no issue and it would give you consistent watering without having to rely on someone coming by the house.

I have a fringe tree in my backyard. I’ve had it for 18 years and the most beautiful and fragrant tree. I wrap the branches with small white Christmas lights for nighttime ambiance. It’s really beautiful when the fringes are blooming. Thank you for all your garden knowledge.

I’ve got bignonia ‘Tangerine Beauty’ growing on a trellis outside my back door. LOVE this plant! Evergreen is a plus - and, oh, those hundreds of orange trumpet flowers in early summer are glorious! Had a Shasta viburnum…..it tried to taken over my ppty! 😱 Buh bye viburnum! I’ve got some Soil3 and I’m not in love with the tilth of it - agree some pine bark conditioner was needed (my opinion). Lucky you…turf free! I loathe this Bermuda grass that cannot be stopped (sigh). I am down to just a pathway in front and sides of house, with a relatively small patch of turf in the back yard. Walking paths thru the gardens is simply the best thing! Especially when you can nibble some fruits, harvest some veg and gather some eggs along the way! 👍🏻 Thanks for another great video!

I purchased my viburnum plicatum in a 4 inch pot years ago - she's now probably four feet tall and six feet wide and in glorious bloom. It probably took 3 years to do that! Mine is in a spot where it will never have to be pruned, and her natural form is exactly what I want, so if folks have the space, I highly recommend it. Mine is also in soil that is damp almost all year. Great work, Jim! I would love to have no lawn, but it's going to take a long, long time to get there.

Jim, I noticed that when transplanting the garden plants into pots that you filled even the large pots with soil all the way. I've seen other people fill the bottom of large pots with sticks, rocks, plastic bottles or cardboard. Would you recommend that or is it best just to fill with dirt/potting soil no matter how large the container?

More dirt, more rooting space, more moisture retention without water logging, more insulation from heat and cold, more nourishment for the plant. The poor plant is already being forced to live in a vessel we think is pretty. I think the theory of organic material in the bottom of a raised bed than it does in a smaller container.

Yeah! Vital Earth Growers Fine Bark is in North Texas and the broker told me to add the fines to the BM-7 so that I use to plan for pots like yours. Couldn’t find a good Veggie Mix. Just got a 15 gallon Variegated Boxwood and will be keeping in a pot.

Oh how I wish I could totally get rid of my grass, but there is just way too much to do it myself. I am 68 and I have added new beds and actually where grass was not growing very well anyway I made a HUGE sitting area. There is still way to much grass and I hate the $50 a week I have to pay for someone to mow it all.

I have a question that is off-topic: My hellebores have many small hellebores babies. At what point do I dig these up to transplant or do I leave them in place? They are 1 to 2 inches in diameter.

I would love to eliminate most/all of our lawn areas (Bermuda - ugh!), but for various reasons (unfenced lawns between houses, slope of the lot, etc.), we can't. So many desired plants. So little planting areas.

Back in the Fall, when Steph planted the plants in the ground from the ceramic pots did she cut the roots back? How often do you guys cut the roots back when putting plants in a pot?

Some pots had forms that required me to prune off some roots as a must to actually remove them. The plants for the main part, had not been in them too long. They would need it in time.

I want to go no-lawn in a corner of my yard. Is there an alternative to digging out every square inch of sod for days on end? I’m in zone 9a with spiderwort poking through the grass, and it’s a beast to remove when I’ve dug up the grass to create garden beds in the past. Hoping there’s an easier way!

Love Soil3 for my clay soil in 8a Greenville SC. The Chinese Snowball viburnum I planted a year ago bloomed this year, and when the blooms are done, I will cautiously start the process of limbing up to form a tree. Love watching your show.

I planted two Viburnum in a part shade, part sun two years ago. Zone 7a. They were both very small, about a foot tall when planted. One is about two and half feet tall now. The other is about two feet. Are they really slow growers?

What conditions do calycanthus need? My grandmother had 4 at her house 20 years ago and 2 of them died. The last 2 are beside each other in the south side of the house such that they have firmed a single colony (dry site full sun). One that died was under a silver maple that died around the same time the tree was cut down (looked like fire blight) the other one I can't remember but it was in shade (former z6b now 7a).

I am stealing your overwintering idea of heeling potted plants in a bed. Gonna try using my compost pile behind my shed. The plants you stored in your veg bed look great! I usually group my pots together and then cover them with frost cloth 7b. So you recharge half of the soil in your pots each spring by adding chunky rich compost? Do you find it cheaper to buy premixed bagged potting soil or DIY own potting soil by buying the ingredients bulk but seperate.

Thanks for showing the big bag of soil being used in containers and that the mix you use has bark in it. I got the normal garden soil so I’ll mix it with some other material before putting it in any containers. I usually only use it in the ground.

I planted a viburnum probably about five years ago or so and this the first time I’m going to be getting a few small flowers. I haven’t fertilized it so I’m sure thats my problem with the flowers but I did buy some organic fertilizer so I plan on fertilizing it the next time I can get outside, rain for the next several days. 🪻🌷💚🙃
