I like how they often include pre-primarch legion markings in the transfer sheets. Terran Eagles for the Imperial Fists, War Hound crests etc.

Basically, the Iron Hands fit everything for me. The Aethestic is Grimdark cyborgs in metallic black armor. They have a balance play style and are tough so my models stick around. The lore is awesome, and I really love that the Iron Hands basically go INSANE when Ferris Manus dies. LOVE THAT CONCEPT! And the miniature range is awesome! The FW MKIII squad gives us bionic arms, torsos, and legs to mix and match with the plastic MKIII marines. Their bionic heads look amazing and allow us to really customize our dudes. Also, Gorgon terminators and Medusan Immortals are just badass looking, and again can be used as characters and for kitbashing. Bonus, virtually all of our range is used by IRON WARRIORS players to kitbash and customize their armies and characters! WIN WIN!!

As an Iron Warriors enjoyer, I was VERY close to picking up Iron Hands too, they're super cool for the reasons you specified, and I LOVE their unique sculpts! The Warsmith I'm planning on building would include some bits from Gorgon Terminators, and I'm totally picking up IH MKIII bits for Iron Havocs and veterans. Y'all got the best bits, we're jealous out here!

Don't forget how their color scheme can be made more complex than it seems. There is a difference between silver, sheen black, and plain black. One can also add white, or other colors like red for clan Morragul.

New to Warhammer in general, took their test online and it told me Dark Angels. After hours of research, definitely the right call. I have so much to learn about this universe, so many games and the tabletop with these minis is so much!

I think the lore for the Word bearers is actually pretty good, I hated them before I read the first heretic and a few other early Horus Heresy novels, They go to all the trouble creating the most perfect city, concentrate on citizens wellbeing both mentally, physically and spirituality, sure they were taking longer to bring a planet under the Emperors control than other chapters but they were trying to do it through diplomacy rather than pure force. . All that and the Emperor just destroys everything, In 40k what the world bearers were doing would have been considered the right way and they would have found allies among the Black Templars and especially the Inquisition and eclusiarchy and been seen as fanatically loyal. . Wrong time wrong place and a bit of a misunderstanding caused a lot of issues.

The ironic tragedy of the Word Bearers and the way the Siege books focus on how the Lectitio Divinitatus became the bedrock for the new Imperial Creed is really cool.

I'm genuinely more attached to the Thousand Sons than any other nation or force from any other piece of fiction. I own every Horus Heresy book that features them (even Battle for the Abyss, which - despite being shockingly mediocre on the whole - contains one of my favorite HH characters), and they are to me the most tragic story in the entire Warhammer world. A misunderstood and mistrusted Legion who literally just wanted to spread knowledge and learning throughout the stars; their list of compliant worlds might be much shorter than some others, but every world on that list became a paradise of enlightenment. Prospero was the greatest world in the entire Imperium (FIGHT ME), a genuine utopia where the collected lore of a galaxy was stored, where the doctors could cure cancer with their minds, where the people passed their time debating philosophy in the gardens and delving into the mysteries of the cosmos. And because of Magnus' mistakes - mistakes made with the best of intentions, deriving from a son's need for his father's approval - Horus' duplicity, and the blind mistrust and hatred of Leman Russ, that world was destroyed in fire and a *loyal* legion was shattered and driven into the open arms of Chaos. (Spoilers ahead!) My favorite moment in the Horus Heresy novels is when Magnus confronts the Emperor under the Palace during the Siege of Terra. The Emperor offers him everything he could have ever wanted - redemption, a second chance, a new Legion free of the horror of the flesh-change - but the price he demands is that Magnus forsake the Thousand Sons and leave them to their fate... so Magnus tells him to blow it. "A thousand sons?" said Vulkan, still pleading with his brother. "A thousand already damned sons for the sake of the Imperium?" "Even one was too many," said Magnus. It's the moment when he comes full circle. On Prospero, he was almost willing to let his sons die for the sake of the Imperium; but he couldn't follow through on that. Here, for the first time he becomes master of his own destiny. No longer a blind pawn of fate, buffeted by betrayal and manipulated by both his father and Tzeentch, he does not "fall" to Chaos - he jumps, with open eyes, for the sake of the sons he almost abandoned. Anyway, this was all a very long-winded way of saying that I've already chosen my Legion. Beyond their story, I love their aesthetic, with their robes and sigils and profusion of arcane and esoteric details. I love their color scheme (red is my favorite color, and the red + gold + off-white combo is just... *chef's kiss*), and their playstyle. Still a great guide though.

True. And it makes the whole Rubric of Ahriman even more tragic - the legion Magnus sacrificed so much for, seemingly damaged beyond repair by his favorite son. Among other primarchs - a group full of regular assholes like the Lion or Lorgar, hypocrites like Leman Russ and Mortarion, insecure man-kids like Fulgrim, Ferrus or Perturabo and outright psychos like Curze or Angron, Magnus is definitely one of, if not the most sympathetic, complex and interesting one. The only tragedy of similar proportions to the Thousand Sons is the story of the World Eaters and Angron, but for different reasons, of course.

@@nordhulfr Oh yeah, 100%. Ahriman himself is such a deeply tragic figure; probably my favorite character in 40k. Pre-Heresy, he was the gentlest soul (well... as gentle as an Astartes can be). He was the one who questioned Magnus' more eccentric decisions. During their first clash with the Wolves on Shrike, Ahriman was the one trying to rein everyone in and keep them from doing anything rash. He was the one who questioned Magnus' psychic projection to warn the Emperor. He taught human Remembrancers to harness their latent Psychic power, speaking to them as a mentor rather than a superior. And then after the Legion fell, his grief over his twin's death and his bitterness over the Imperium's betrayal of his Legion led him on a spiral of obsession. The worst part is that he still technically has noble intentions; all he really wants to do is save his Legion from the fate that he created for them. He is the personification of "the ends justify the means," a "good man" doing horrifically evil things in pursuit of some combination of redemption and vengeance.

one of my favorite things about the thousand sons is that the rubric of ahriman kinda goes both ways. all of the non-psyker members of the legion got turned into dust but in turn all the psykers arent able to be corrupted by chaos and they are very unique in that way. all the other traitor legions have many marines that have been corrupted but tsons cant, and i really like that about them. they are the "nicest" a chaos worshipper could get, especially with ahriman and magnus

I would say IW are the easiest to paint. Boltgun metal, nuln wash, boltgun metal drybrush, warplock bronze trim, argax and nuln wash with a light dry brush of bolt gun. Paint the shoulders black and add hazard stripes at random. Actually, with contrast, AL went from one of the hardest to one of the easiest. Boltgun base, ankellian constrast, silver trim done. Sons of Horus remain one of the most difficult as there is no one easy way to get the proper sea green right. I dont think white is particularly hard to paint. White base coat/primer. Gloss Nuln oil. Drybrush a non-GW white. Done. Done entire storm trooper army for Legion and A Star Phantom army this was that has won best painted twice in local events. Hopefully IW dont get screwed out of their characters. Both Golg and the Shatter-guy loyalist have actual miniatures. They two characters in the Betrayal of Calth boxed set are armed identically to those two guys. Cus-toad-eeze. unless you call space marines ass-tarts

For sons of horus i did nocturne green base and kabalite green as layer. For trims i use balthasar gold with retributor gold highlight. Wash is just nuln oil. Works great imo

Unless I find when I test paint that I'm not a fan of a clean Death Guard scheme I'm going with them since I really like the lore they have and some of their legion specific models. Closest contenders are (in alphabetical order): Alpha Legion, Salamanders and Thousand Sons. Honourable mention; Luna Wolves (though I fear they'd be a nightmare to paint lol).

If the cleanliness bothers you you could try weather and battle damage. Some rhinox hide/charred brown lightly sponged on, dab on some silver scratches. Its focus it on the edges of armour. A good wash is "marine juice" equal parts riekland flesh shade, nuln oil and thinning medium (ratio 1:1:1). Sonic sledgehammer has a couple videos showing it. Hope that helps

I've been painting my 40k Death Guard in their legion colors, get a good brown oil or enamel wash on their cream armor. It looks great. Some awesome references are the "Pallid Hands" color schemes.

The best way to play as The Imperial Fists, is to not play as The Imperial Fists! They can be a whole lot of fun when you build your army around the Black Templar (Sigismund) or Crimson Fist (Alexis Polux). My largest Horus Heresy army (by far!) is the Iron Warriors, so I laugh at the sons of Dorn. But Alexis Polux is just so damn awesome that I had so start a small force built around him! 😍

@@Grubnar Laugh away. Reminder that even in the Iron Cage, you only broke the 7th such that Dorn could rebuild them stronger than before. I personally am in absolute love with the conception of the Praetorians of Terra as people who do what must be done simply because no others will do it without demanding honor in return. I think the fundamental difference between Dorn and Perturabo, admirable men both, is that Perturabo didn't see how little Dorn actually cared for the fame he was surrounded with. Perty should have been rewarded and praised more than he was, yes, but simply demanding respect will only cause others to lose it. Look at the First for an excellent demonstration of that principle.

Building White Scars as we speak (already have the Khan). But with 2.0 coming in, the price of that legion could come down quite a bit if the Scimitar jetbikes get ported to plastic as it's a generic legion unit.

Considering I have a full alpha legion force for 40k, including alpharius to proxy as whatever warlord I want to use, and an alpha legion contemptor, I think I already know what legion I'll get, but this was fun to watch anyway, Iron Warriors is definitely a runner up though, I love to paint hazard stripes for whatever reason.

@@catalyst772 You get to steal a unit from any astartes army and use abilities and such specific to that unit, it just uses overall rules from AL. So if you picked, say White scars speeders, you would be able to run a unit of white scars speeders. It lets you have a field of unique units for other factions on the shelf while still playing your main one, and getting to pull one of those units off for some fun times without having to commit to painting a full army of white scars.

I'm still stuck deciding between Imperial Fists and Dark Angels. I like them both a lot. On one hand I like Dorn and the stalwart defensive nature of the Imperial Fists, but I also love the knightly aspects of the Dark Angels and the idea of taking a bunch of plasma or volkite weapons. Have no idea if the DA can actually take more plasma/volkite weapons than other legions rules-wise, but that fits them a lot more than putting those weapons in Imperial Fists I feel. I play general space marines in 40k, painted as a custom chapter so I can use them as whatever I want, but with the new HH edition and box set I want to go with a specific faction this time.

Yeah HH is definitely more narrative based so picking a Legion is the way to go. Personally I'd lean towards the Dark Angels. Cause they super cool. Imperial Fists are too "goody two shoes" for my liking. My recommendation is to read a couple of novels featuring your chosen Legions and hopefully that will help make your mind up :D

In terms of HH Legions, I was always kind of torn between Death Guard, Iron Warriors, Night Lords and Salamanders. But only started playing when they introduced Daemons of the Ruinstorm, because I do play Daemons in 40k/Fantasy games since they can be used in them all. Not to mention it has so much room for creativity, because there only are a handful of HH Daemon Models. As well we have a guy who plays Orks with HH fan rules, always looks like a lot of fun.

Dark Angels. Most versatile army by a long shot. They look great in ALL marks of armor so you can vary you guys around. Finally their heraldry is one of the best and actually easy to freehand. Finally 3rd parting them is easy. The only negative is if you plan to have multiple legions on an army since DA don't do buddies.

I'm really struggling picking my legion. I've narrowed it down to Dark Angels, Space Wolves and Alpha Legion. I love the idea of collecting Space knights so DA really appeal to me, however I'm not sure I'm keen on painting so much black, and not a huge fan of their primarch and they don't seem to be involved in many aspects of the heresy. I really like the Space Wolves lore and their primarch, and their colour scheme appeals to me more I think. But I'm not big on their minature range like you. And with Alpha Legion, I really like their style of warfare and I like that their motives are left open to your imagination to play around with. Plus their colour scheme is really awesome. Minature range seems OK, although those Lernean Terminators are awesome. Plus the big thing is also I'm still very new to the hobby, so want a legion that is easy to paint and easy to learn to play. HELP.

Alpha Legion encourage any kind of playstyle so surprisingly make for a good beginner army. And are SO easy to paint. Their miniature range is great. Lore is awesome. I also love Space Wolves and Dark Angels but I think Alpha Legion may be the way to go??

For sure! There's so many factors involved. It's easy to get distracted, sometimes a dozen times, before you land on the army that's right for you.

I had picked half my army before I even realized how many factions there were to pick from. I was going on just what kits I saw for sale between amazon and ebay. I ended up going with blood angels as they had a decent amount of dif unique characters and kits compared to most other options, and as you mentioned the painting appeared to be a little more on the simple/quicker side. Slap on some red, a little paint up the weapons, basic icons, shade them a splash and a quick highlight and done. I also like red and black color scheme overall. What I didnt expect was to find more ease in the necrons that came with the sets I picked up to be even easier and quicker to paint. What was going to be a secondary back up army ends up the first one table ready. I'd like to paint some black templar or death watch next but ive heard a lot of people complain about painting black space marines being a pain and I dont look forward to that, but I do like the look.

I am collecting and playing Thousand Sons and for literally any metal-sheen like armour... base black, layer dark silver color, drybrush from top by light silver color and layer either contrast (akhelian green makes amazing Alpha Legion like that) or any tamiya clear X color. For my TS I am using tamiya clear red ofc and it´s super easy candy red.

I have used Tamiya Clear Red before and have experimented with Contrast. Turns out Blood Angels Red contrast mixed with Liberator Gold makes a very strong metallic contrast paint hybrid (8:1 mix), especially when matched with Gloss varnish. It is pretty much a 1 to 1 match with the FW style candy red.

I really enjoyed this video and I am in a very similar situation. Getting hyped for new HH and trying to decide my legion. I have been playing/painting Deathwatch for 40k though. Still = No Black armor legions. Which is a shame bc honestly my best fit lore/model range is Dark Angels but … yeah pass on the black. When it comes to models, the primarch is huge factor. Which puts me off on a few chapters. Although there are some great 3rd party prints out there for those. Long story short is im also leaning heavily towards Alpha Legion. Especially the actually loyal destroy. Chaos from within vibes. Blood Angels are aslo high on the list but the Primarch model is not the best IMO Thousand Sons have a great model line but like you the lore is kind of lackluster. Funnily enough your video had me reviewing Salamander and now they jumped back on the “short list”. Also was thinking white scars and world eaters but the white armor is … a factor Spacewolves are cool but like you i would end up having to do a ot of 40k conversion stuff to get them to look how id like on the table Hmmmmm ….

I like all factions but I don't really love any one of them in particular. Although I do like being a loyalist over joining chaos, I'm still gonna choose the Alpha Legion because I just want one thing: *do a little trolling.* Before a match, I'll tell my loyalist opponent that I'm actually a loyalist in disguise and I'm sabotaging my chaos allies and myself for the Emperor. Whether they buy it or not doesn't matter since the small seed of doubt has now been planted in their mind. During a match, I'll say _"Just as planned"_ and smirk. They'll maybe think I know what they're up to, or just bluffing, or maybe I'm making them think I'm bluffing and I actually know their plan, or maybe I'm making them think that I'm making them think I'm bluffing, etc. I'll make them overthink and affect their decision making skills. I'll randomly do something that in the eyes of experienced players would be a braindead move or simply batshit insane, but I'll grin as if I'm just messing with them or seeing my master plan set in motion. If I win a match, it's the result of my master plan. If I lose, it's because I'm purposefully sabotaging myself _"just as planned"_ -and definitely not because of my horrendous strategy.- Win or lose, I'm still the victor because it's *_all part of the plan._* For me, I really think it's just fun to play with the Alpha Legion, and I really love their glossy shade of blue. *_But that's if I'll ever have the money to get into tabletop lmao_*

You can do alternative paint schemes just fine like specialist companies, black shields, splinter groups opposed to their own legion, proto chapters and warbands, environment camo, and basically any other reason.

Great video. I’m super excited for 2.0 as I’d hesitated over original Heresy due to cost (black books were very prohibitive). Having a hard time choosing a legion though. Paint Blood Angels in 40k so want to avoid red and black so that cuts out quite a few.

The new army list book will include their rules. So far they look pretty nasty and got a steep point reduction too. 4th legion new rules look great with access to pinning bolt weapons w shred on everything.

I have 12 Vorax I have been using as Robots in 40k, also 60 Secutarii I have been using in 40k , 30 of the gun ones and 30 spear and shield. . I brought the big spider looking tech priest dude just due to him looking awesome.

@@johnfarscape If you pick up a Legion Praevian, you'd be able to bring Vorax and Castellax in an IW army without having to bring an allied detachment! Plus, IW and Mech are super buddy-buddy, so allying them is not a bad move at all either. It's thematic, it's fitting aesthetically, if you've got the funds and time to dedicate to a legion, IW might be for you! Iron Hands are also good pals with Mech too, so keep them in mind if you're not sure on the legion just yet. Also yes, Domitar-Ferrum battle automata are best bots

Night Lords should be in Stealth and speed. They can force 2-3 turns of Night Fight( which will have a much bigger play in 2.0) and love their jump packs even with a special legion Jump squad you can buy

I think you should give the Word Bearers a second chance. Yes, Lorgar is quite whiny and, frankly, weak in the beginning. But he is NOT just a manipulated pawn to Erebus and Kor Phaeron. If you read Aurelian and Betrayer (and gave Butcher's Nails a listen/read before the latter, its awesome) you can see how manipulative and calculating he is in turn. He and his legion suffer immensely from the decentralized nature of worship though. By putting the ultimate authority and control with the pantheon, even though one or the other person labels themselves their Hierophant or whatnot, it invites schism, just like in any church. It happens more than once and it happens violently towards the end of the Heresy/Siege of Terra.

I think it's weird how you cut out white scars when white is now so easy to paint with GW's new range of paints, there now being a spray paint called "white scar" and soulblight grey being a great shade, and even then, could use tamaiya grey panel liner and you got yourself a crisp white paint job off the bat. I'm just starting to paint and I was told to not start with white, but now with all these neat new tools to paint white armor, it's easy and quick to pop a marine with white scar, tamaiya grey panel, blue eyes and blood angels red for all the red bits. I really recommend trying it as it's made it so much easier and better for painters new to the hobby such as myself to paint these white schemes.

White scars are super easy to paint tbf, spray grey seer, drybrush white, mask off some zags and paint red, drybrush or highlight red, and then your standard weathering or washing method. The decals are more of an issue imo but da are the worst for that by far i think

Great video! I hafta disagree with your assessment of the Daemons of the Ruinstorm. After reading through the rules for army building with them the other day, the army is absolutely made with GW plastic daemons in mind. Matter of fact, list building is based entirely on just base size. And then you give the units rules to flesh out which God they are from. FW has very few HH specific daemons, namely large characters. But for filling out troops, Fast attack, etc. you're gonna be buying 40k/AOS daemons.

I was feeling the same way. Really hyped over a year ago for new Horus heresy & when the cinematic trailer came out I was all in. However some of the community put me off bit by bit with basically making me feel mark 6 can only be in raven guard or alpha legion. Nothing wrong with those legions it’s just I wanted something different to them. It just felt like so much you can’t play these legions because they won’t wear mark 6. Put me off but I’m over the salt now & looking forward to Horus heresy again 🙂.

i was doing world eaters but have switched to dark angels for a lot of the reasons in this video, they just tick more boxes. Space wolves and leman russ are my fav legion so they still tempt me but dark angels just seem better overall. But not having russ will make me sad especially as he's such a beast, maybe the best in combat which i love. But the lion is maybe a slightly better model and still great in combat, and the dark angels models are some of the best

I'm having such a hard time narrowing between, iron hands, blood angels, and salamanders. How are these looking moving forward? Which do you think will be the least restrictive? Iron Hands will have cool conversions I can do, salamanders (if I try and paint the fire) will be a challenge, and blood angels are just cool and I've never painted a red army. Downside like 3 other folks at my club have iron hands. No salamanders or blood angels for HH yet

Typical word bearer fan defending the primarch but he wasn't really manipulated. You learn during the Calth books that he only let Erebus and Kor Phaeron do their stuff as long as it was convenient for him and he just discarded them when they were no longer useful. The 'transfigured' version of him in the lore could probably go toe to toe with most primarchs but going against a full power Horus may have been a bad idea. They have so many good characters that I still don't know which one I want to play in my first army.
