If you get the airbrush working, try a few shades of dark grey as a zenithal for your black. I often see either that or mad edge highlighting for black. Zenithal works well for me and it’s dead easy.

That's not a bad idea, thank you. I'm also going to try a satin varnish rather than Matt, see if a low sheen brings out more detail
