Hosay or Tadjah is a West Indian commemoration, in which multi-colored model mausoleums are paraded, then ritually offered up to the sea, or any body of water.

Interesting. I never knew Indians kept up their traditions in Jamaica. Nice to know.

We were brought from Bihar & Uttar Pradesh India in the 1800’s by the British to work on the sugar cane plantations to Trinidad, Guyana & Jamaica & we have definitely kept the traditions alive.

As a child I remember Indian Jamaicans taking a simple hosay to Pagee and try to send it off with the hope that it would reach their homeland.

I was born and grew in Water Lane and the district looked forward every year to seeing the parade. I now realized the foundation of the tradition is idolatry! "Thou shalt have no other gods before me. Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven images or any likeness.... Exodus 20:3-4 This is to believers in Christ Jesus.
@tc23344 жыл бұрын
This is the likeness of tomb...not of anything in Heaven. As you are Christian, you should go concern yourself with Christian things..instead of criticizing Muslim things you clearly don't understand. lol
@isaiah38723 жыл бұрын
It's a tadjah designed in the form of a tomb to commemorate two people (Muslims) that died centuries ago....how is that idolatrous? They _don't_ worship the two deceased. Even by Christian standards, we also bury our dead & have tombs or mausoleums. If you don't believe in Islam (neither do I) that doesn't automatically make the celebration idolatrous.

This is their religion and they are entitled to practise it as they see fit. A great many Christians in Jamaica also practised Obeah.

You had too much footage of the speaker and very little of the band or mausoleum. I would have liked to get a detailed view of the colourful mausoleum.
