Last week we discussed fertilizers, this week it's time to talk about pest control. What is a pesticide, what are the benefits of using them, and are there different types of pest control? Tonight we discuss synthetic and organic methods of controlling those pests in your vegetable garden.

Great upload...👍My husband and I both make our living in pest control. There is a huge misconception that ALL pesticides are dangerous ☠. Oh, it can be if NOT handled correctly but keeping others informed is 💯 in safety. We started our okra under a grow light and yes, It's slow going outside right now (we are in lower Alabama). We are already seeing powdery mildew aka..."the bane of my existence" 😁 on our squash plants. I'm hoping I treated the plants in time.

I planted my okra by seed a few weeks ago. They are up, no true leaves yet but don’t seem to be going anywhere. I’m sure it’s because of the cool evenings. I’ve never fed them this early before but I gave them a lite shot of 20-20-20 and they are starting to wake up. I’m in 8b.

Talking about old timey pesticides do you all remember Lindane? That brown liquid that turned the water milky looking. WOW! That was the best flea dip ever! Taken off the market in the early 90s I think. Sevin dust saved my garden this year from the worst case of cut worm I’ve ever seen! I dusted the base of each plant after dark to minimize bee damage to my 4 hives. I hated to use it but sometimes you have to do what works after trying other products that did not.

Dang if that Old Goat ain't hard to find this week! That might be him next to that jar on the top shelf behind Greg. If it is, he's on his knees hiding! But that also looks like something crammed into the butter churn on the top shelf behind Ms. Sheila! Great show on pest controls! It's that time of year! I'm guessing fungicides are coming soon! Sure hate to miss y'all in Jemison but I've got around 100 maters in the back of the truck hitting the ground tomorrow. Enjoy your stay in Alabama! (even though you crack on us all the time!) Doubt you will make it to Selma since Jason and Brooke moved, but if you do enjoy that beautiful architecture! Some of the prettiest old homes you'll find anywhere! Also my birthplace!

Begin treating for insects as soon as you notice signs of an infestation, the sooner you start the easier it will be to get rid of the critters. Begin with some Neem oil or horticulture oil. Bug buster 0 works great also. Below is a link to our pest control products hosstools.com/product-category/pest-control/

@@jackm4714 First let me say I have never ever seen shade cloth in local junk shops, thrifts stores or any 2nd hand stores. I have looked at garage sales because I think it more likely they could would know the shade percentage % number of the cloth. Knowing the shade number of shade net, such as if it is 30% or 50% or 70% is critical to the effective use of shade cloth on garden crops , for instance, 30% shadecloth can prevent sunscald on peppers and tomatoes while not affecting fruit production, but 70% can cause the issue of no fruit at all.

@@Maggie-Gardener-Maker I have in my shops, but I live very rural. I actually picked up a new soaker hose and connectors from a neighbor that had put out a "free" sign by the road yesterday. He also had shade cloth. But I hear your point on the various percentages!
