This review is a complete comparison. Hot Chip has never been similar to the bands to which you continue to compare them. And I'm sorry, but vocals have never been their strong point? Joe and Alexis, on their own let alone together, are a remarkable example of how the juxtaposition of electronic dance music and soft, clear vocals can be ultimately better than forced, uncomfortable shouts and full throated gluttony. As usual, I appreciate your point of view, but I can tell you were looking for something different from this album. I have yet, however, to be disappointed.

This album could've been 2015's Settle, but I think after the first few tracks it was apparent we weren't in store for a future classic. Not bad, though. Huarache Lights and Dark Night are pretty solid.

I think they played it safe in some respects, but some moments on this album were so undeniably impressive that they more than mitigated the forgettable detours (e.g. the rap verse - which wasn't a height on DLS' part but not exactly awful either). Am I alone in loving the vocals, as well? They work so well with the sounds on the album it's difficult to imagine any other voice being paired with Hot Chip's music.

ALLA was pretty disappoint while Surf has quickly become one of my favorite albums of all time. I've been relistening to it since it dropped and it gets better with every listen. Try it again a couple times, see how you feel.

I think this is a fair review, I really like this album but I agree with you about the rap part in Love is the Future, its very unexpected and out of place. Easy to Get is undoubtedly one of my favourite songs they've ever put out, its so fucking funky then descends into a catchy chorus and dance beat. Massive tune. Other highlights for me are Started Right, Hurache Lights, Need You Now and Why Make Sense? (second favourite track, I can imagine that being an insane opening number for a live set). They only ones I'm not really feeling are Cry for You and White Wine and Fried Chicken. 8/10 for me

I'd give this a strong 7. Really enjoyed this album. The only bad ideas were the rap verse and the slower ballads. Need You Now was simply perfect, so addicting, and I agree with you that they should have adventured more with the vocals, like they did in this track. I also loved the use of violins in tracks like Love Is The Future. This was my introductory album to Hot Chip, though. That might have changed my experience a little.

Will Tenenbaum the album has two sites: the slow, druggy with mostly singing and the turn-up site. Their nearly equal of quantity and I'd say the two sites also nearly equal in quality terms. Slow site has a filler or two, overall great album though strong 8. Has pretty unique production, amazingly placed features and great flow by Rocky. He delivered

Omg that rap verse was like in the mid 90s when rap went sorta main stream and started popping up in pizza, cereal and toy commercials and like every PSA. Yeah it was like one of those tacky ass verses. And I was grooving my ass off to that song until that verse came. Never been a fan of Hot chips slow stuff but they seem to stick with a song or two each album. Overall the hooks and house beats on 3/4 of "why make sense" have kept me going back to it tho. The rap verse might be the most awkward musical choice of Hot Chip's career, especially given the alarming trend of terrible rap verses appearing in pop songs. THAT BEING SAID, in your immortal words, this album GROOVES. They seem to toss their typically bouncy melodies aside for the sake of these compact, layered, electronic showcases, and I think they nail it 80% of the time. These tracks will kill live. 7.5/10.

It's still catchy, but I feel it should've had one more trip to the drawing board. And while Need You Now is a great song in a sense, I am still pretty disappointed in it because I heard a live version beforehand and it was much stronger.

Some real turkeys on what's otherwise a solid album, such as 'So Much Further to Go' one of their worst ever tracks.
