Hot Chocolate holds the distinction of having a Top 40 UK hit for every year from 1970 to 1984. Best known in the US for the 1975 hit "You Sexy Thing", this song peaked at #6 in 1978. Written by lead singer Errol Brown it featured a distinctive distorted guitar riff by Harvey Hinsley using a Marshall Time Modulator. I finally found a pristine 12" version which included more instrumental passages than the LP or the single version and was a perfect fit for a longer version. Someone had asked that I try this one and here it is. Hope you enjoy it!

Per: www.oldiesmusic.com/news.htm Errol Brown, lead singer of Hot Chocolate, the London-based quintet that gave us "You Sexy Thing" (#3-1976), "Emma" (#8-1975) and "Every 1's A Winner" (#6-1979), died of liver cancer at his home in the Bahamas Wednesday (May 6th, 2015). He was 71. Errol was born in Jamaica but moved to England when he was 6. Though the group split in 1986, Errol continued with a solo career that culminated in a farewell tour in 2009. The Queen made him a Member of the Order of the British Empire for his musical success in 2003... May he R.I.P.

I've heard the album cut of this before, but this long-form version takes the cake. That guitar lick, the string synth backing....and that vocal from the late Errol Brown. No disappointment here, this is a true party song in this form. This is why I still love 1970s tunes, even though I am a child of the 1980s.

If music is true, it always has such context. Meaningful context gives it passion and it can be heard in the sound of the final product. Such context is no2 method to differentiate true music from some of the commercial crap nowadays. No1 method is hearing it :) You can hear the groove over the success formula, you can hear the raw sexuality over catchy tunes and subliminal frequency of dudes like Max Martin, you can hear music over the money. Money will (in most cases) come if the sound has heart in it, if its got love. Our dude Martin has a heart, and he is a freaking genius. But he is in it for the business. Im not saying Hot Chocolate didnt want the money, because they surely did. But you can SEE the ghetto in them, you can SEE the pain, you can SEE the rhythm fucking destroying everybodies ASS. They wanna PLAY man! Thats what music IS!!! And I know Katy Perry wanted to SING man... but TRUE music is simply less of an act. Its an ACTION. There always WILL be act in music, but TRUE MUSIC - less of an act. The act is real. Most of the rappers arent fucking gangsters, but most of them have SEEN it, it took their friends and buddies down. Some were directly involved or suffered the consequences... but They did an ACTION about it. They wanted to sing ABOUT it. And there is a LOT of true music nowadays. Vulfpeck in the

The mid 70s was pre- synthesized sound. I'm thinking a vintage distortion pedal AKA fuzz box. Try the one called "Big Muff" (?) I had a cheap fuzz box. As the 9v battery was slowly dying (lower voltage) the distortion changed a bit, and it got "Echo Delay" . Dry with Wet signals. truly an amazing 10 minutes. Tone was perfect for the outro of Journey- I'll be Alright Without You. This phenomenon reminds me of EVH 5150, a voltage drop giving a cool tone. So save your (almost dead) 9v batteries, if you use individual , pedal effects. It's fun to mess with

so cool when you discover a song from the past that you'd never heard before. it's like it was just released, shiny and new. this is a masterpiece, the guitar riff, bass, drums, trumpet, vocal and the genius background space music keyboards.

You know why?! Because with Hot Chocolate and Eddie Grant, etc. it was the Brixton sound! With LKJ and others, even fucking David Bowie and Marc Bolan, all of them wanted to catch the unusual beat and lyrical pharases of the Caribbean. It was clear that Sex Pistols, etc. were coming from east of London, like the Slade, but this or that, the music was springing from the hearth and experience and with Thatcherism of 1978 onwards, we felt we could win the war and we rebelled. . We should have know all what we against to.. But instead, we fought between us. Mill Wall, Clapham Common, Chrystal Place, WestHam United, and every fucker in London, east, west south, north or in between, clapped their hands at us, the gladiators. kzbin.info/www/bejne/qJvPhJx3iNiIf9U Etc. kzbin.info/www/bejne/babZiminipyUr8k
