Hot Fuzz (2007)
My first time watching Edgar Wright's Hot Fuzz was so much fun. This movie is absolutely hilarious! You'll notice I had to break this into two parts. It was the only way to get it monetized. I've had a lot of trouble with Universal lately. My Shaun of the Dead reaction isn't even monetized. I hope you enjoy this reaction.

I'd bet more on Wright's impish sense of humour. Hire a famous, famously-beautiful, and instantly-recognizable actor and have them uncredited and their face covered throughout the film? It's the last thing they'd expect you to do, and it creates a lot of interesting questions in the process. I'm sure Blanchett thought it was hilarious. It's a form of that flash-reveal joke of "Vanisher was Brad Pitt" in Deadpool 2, which Brad apparently did for a cup of coffee.

The reverse peace sign is an insult in Britain (flicking the V). It comes from the English Longbowmen being threatened with losing their drawing fingers if the French ever captured them in battle, during the Hundred Year Wars. So the English archers used to flick the v's to show the French they still had their drawing fingers.

That's a common belief, but there's no actual historical basis for it. Urban legend, I'm afraid. They're often hard to spot, but an occasional sign is when the explanation they offer is just a little too direct and convenient (similar to "backronyms"). Linguistic history tends towards the twisty.
@kevinwilson140
@kevinwilson140 2 жыл бұрын
@@michaelccozens yeah that's fair enough, history is full of half truth and outright fabrications. But at some point the gesture and the expression got intertwined somehow. it's a rather interesting expression since the intent has nothing to do with what the word means in any other context. It's a general sign of disdain rather than being anything sexual or to do with rubbing. But it probably is just an urban legend that sounded good so got spread around.

In the village "play" they have everything patterned after the 1996 "Romeo + Juliet" directed by Baz Luhrmann, staring Claire Danes and Leo DiCaprio, as shown by the costumes [and Juliet killing herself by a gun] instead of a usual Renaissance version.
@michaelccozens
@michaelccozens 2 жыл бұрын
Doing "updated" versions of Shakespearian (and other) plays (and/or just swapping time periods for famous pieces in general) was/is/can be something of a well-known and long-standing creative crutch, too. The 1996 film wasn't the first to do it, and it's been a bit of a mark of misguided attempts at creativity, usually found in the lower rungs of the theatrical community (not to denigrate anyone's creative output, but some is more... resonant than others, and some don't grasp that "different" doesn't always mean "of value"). I think that was the other joke here; it's a terrible play by a terrible local theatre group (particularly the director's, uh, "trophy" star), but, like, what else would you expect in a tiny village?

The death scenes in this British 'comedy' are so over the top bloody and gruesome that they transcend into the region of ridiculously funny again. Then the typical Hercule Poirot scene when Nickolas Angel (or was it Angle😁) recites his exacting trail of evidence that leads him to Simon Skinner, only to be proven wrong when Skinner is completely unhurt. Perfect setup, even better dissolution of the solution. Just bloody amazing. There are so many nods and homages to so many classics in this movie, it just always blows my mind.

The bow fingers: during the 100 years war, English longbowmen were so effective and accurate that the French used to cut the first and second fingers off the right hand of captured archers so they could never draw a bow again (this was considered a worse insult than death as the English longbow was far superior to any other bow in Europe at the time). Awesome reaction! Love your energy! So happy to have found your channel! Other great horror comedies to react to: Tucker and Dale vs Evil, and the underrated New Zealand gem that is Housebound (2014).

Yes, that is Timothy Dalton as the Supermarket owner. He did play Bond in 2 of the series and is generally considered the least popular Bond.

Hot Fuzz (Fudge? lol) is one of my favs... Just a note, this is technically not a sequel to Shaun of the Dead, but the 2nd movie in the Cornetto trilogy of films. Basically each movie has a ice cream product from Cornetto (a british ice cream mfr) and each movie is meant to represent a different genre of movie (Shaun = Horror, Fuzz = Buddy Cop movie, and The Worlds End = Sci-Fi). Can't wait for you to get to The Worlds End and complete the trilogy! en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Three_Flavours_Cornetto_trilogy (uggh, I just realized this post came off as kind of mansplaining, but I did not intend it to be that way... sorry!!)

Arthur Conan Doyle gave Sherlock Holmes some interesting thoughts on the apparent "harmony" of the countryside/village v the alleged criminality of urban centers. He rather felt the reality of the situations to be the inverse.
