Hot Fuzz (2007)
My first time watching Edgar Wright's Hot Fuzz was so much fun. This movie is absolutely hilarious! You'll notice I had to break this into two parts. It was the only way to get it monetized. I've had a lot of trouble with Universal lately. My Shaun of the Dead reaction isn't even monetized. I hope you enjoy this reaction.

In the UK holding what we here in the US would call a backwards peace sign up to someone is like us holding our middle finger up to someone. When I lived there for a short time the first pub my wife and I went to she asked for two drinks, holding her fingers up like that, and with a laugh she was politely suggested to hold two fingers up _forward_ if indicating two of something, LOL 😆

Apparently they were discussing the casting of Skinner in pre production and the main note Wright and Pegg had was "Someone like Timothy Dalton" and because they couldn't think of someone similar enough they said "Why not ask Timothy Dalton?". They didn't expect him to even look at it but he loved the script and signed on immediately.

There's no Hot Fuzz 2, but the Cornetto trilogy is completed by The World's End - please watch it! Lots of cameos. Two ones you may miss: The Father Christmas who stabs Nicholas was Peter Jackson and, continuing the Lord of the Rings theme, Janine (his ex) was Cate Blanchette. The police officer "twins" are played by Bill Bailey, a brilliant British (music-) comedian. The "I brought you into this world..." guy was the village doctor, he delivered him. The Third movie in the so called "Cornetto Triology" from Edgar Wright and Simon Pegg (with Nic Frost) is "The Worlds End". They also made the 2 Seasoned short series "Spaced" which is awesome 😄 - the british original version at least, the US remake was a waste of time and resources, by all accounts.

It's essential to watch this film at least ten times and every time there is more to realise something that hasn't been seen before. The nuance is unlike any film I have ever seen. For example, watching part one of this review there is a one second scene at the fare where two men are either side of the Doris and a roasting pig is in front of them. And in the early pub scene when they are talking about Sgr Poperwell and he says 'I have no intention of jumping into anyone's grave'. Jejejeje. Edgar Wright is a genius.

It's cool that each scene that references a scene from one of Danny's movies (such as Bad Boys 2) is also shot in the same style as that scene from that movie. Pretty clever. In fact this whole movie is very clever in the way it sets up and delivers jokes and story elements. Edgar Wright was going to be the director of the first Antman but apparently his vision did not align with Marvel's. I'd really love to see an Edgar Wright version of Antman.

A convincing attempt ... but you left out one CRUCIAL detail ... Edward Woodward once played a normal police officer assigned to find a missing person in a remote Scottish village (sound familiar?) ... The village seemed perfectly normal, but they were all in on a terrifying pagan ritual involving the sacrifice of somebody in their "Wicker Man" - he eventually gets trapped inside of the hideous-looking "Wicker Man" and burned alive. Alton Towers' latest rollercoaster is themed to the "Wicker Man" - being made of wood as well, and using fire and smoke effects.

While I prefer 'Shaun of the Dead' due to my knowledge and love of the zombie films and genre it works off of, this script is so tight and so many perfect callbacks. My only criticism at all is that they didn't fully let us see and set up the model village early in the film, but the Aaron A. Aronson call back was so good. You would absolutely love every Edgar Wright film, although his latest "One Night in Soho" has had mixed reviews. Not the same tone as his earlier work as it's a straight psychological horror film.

Fun fact: When Edgar Wright thought of who to play Skinner, he wanted a Timothy Dalton-type (thinking Dalton wouldn't want to act in this). After looking around for some time, someone suggested: Why don't we just ask Timothy Dalton?

Sadly - I was in the supermarket at 11pm last night. Two "pigs" came in to do their groceries (in uniform). "Better be on my best behaviour - here are the pigs ,,," They seemed to have the same strategy as me - going aisle-by-aisle - I just wanted them to go away, in case I accidentally did something wrong (like using my trolley without due care and attention ...) ... I nearly bumped into the male, which - no doubt - would have meant the handcuffs going on. The female officer was about 20 years old, blonde - and STUNNING! She was definitely Simon Pegg - and he was a lumbering oaf, like Nick Frost. It's ok to disrespect the pigs. Our own Prime Minister does it all the time.

What you would consider a backwards peace sign in the UK is the middle finger in the US (the FU finger) (which is why I laugh when all the rapper people do it that way and think it means peace). It stems from a time when the British archers were the most feared soldiers in the world, and comes from the archers knocking an arrow.

There is actually zero evidence for that often repeated origin story for the gesture. The warning about the removal of fingers before Agincourt mentions cutting off three fingers, not two, which were required to fire English longbows. There is no solid evidence for the gesture being used before 1901.

@@charleshowie2074 I did look this up after you mentioned it, because I was given this information from my professor in my history course at the university; and it looks like your information may be correct although the two finger Agincourt severing looks to be valid rather than three, but I haven't read the text personally; so I am only going on second hand information. Since history is largely guessing by academics trying to solve a puzzle that they weren't present to witness can anyone know for sure? It's not like they unearthed a work by Chaucer on obscene medieval hand gestures.

@@charleshowie2074 I agree professors can certainly be wrong; just look at what is coming out of colleges today. As to the two fingered severing a simple search will give you numerous sites that uphold the history; did you actually read historic text that contradicts that, or from where is your information coming?
@charleshowie2074

@@8967Logan I haven't read the original text, no. I'm relying on the existing historiography. If you know a historian who writes that they are convinced it originated at Agincourt, I'd like to read it.
