Gixxer, I have the old school Power Vision 3B tuner with the updated software from Dynojet via Fuel Moto for my 2023 Low Rider ST, and it runs much better than stock. They sent me a base tune for a 117 Breakout, and I simply ran the auto tune about 30 times in all conditions and overwrote the ECM each time. Is that sufficient? Or do you think I should have a legit dyno tune as well?

Any thoughts on the 2022 H-D Pan-America Special? I have the Power Vision 3B Tuner for my 2023 Low Rider ST and can buy a 2nd tuner license for my Pan-America. I’m 87 years old I bought a 2021 Harley Davidson and I built a camper that I can pull behind my road glide I have over 30,000 miles on it now I have never had a problem with it because every time I head out twice a year ago for the 6000 miles trip. I have my mechanic check it out and make sure everything‘s good.. If you don’t take care of it, it’s not gonna take care of you. I’ve been riding Harley Davidson since 1954. I had one Goldwing that was a piece of junk brakes locked up the plastic fell off so I don’t want to hear about this trash in Harley Davidson. I am disappointed they’re making it in China now that bothers me but the basic drivetrain and the other stuff I don’t want a better bike for what idle speed is not my concern anymore. I just wanna ride 65 miles an hour and go across the country Be safe

I think it was just the rights to the old EVO Sportster, and most of the tooling for that, that went to China...the SWM Stormbreaker, is what it is called. but this is what people who are worried about Chinese competition in industry need to understand: 1) African heroin is a transparent foreign weapons system that has been on the ground and active in the United States, likely since the times of the colonization, every other place that makes the junk ended up doing so as defensive measure to keep sub-saharan africa from eating them alive. 2) African heroin is responsible for coercing the loss of about 91% of the livestock feed produced in the United States by their illegal activities.....3) due to the previously mentioned, the cost of the meager amount of livestock feed, that china legitimately pays for, has been going up.

You are correct on all points. They've been running lean for decades. Another reason to love a carburator. The CV's are so easy to tune. I can do a stage 1 tune in 10 minutes for less than $50. Beats screwing around with a computer.
@brianbayowski9265Күн бұрын
What jets do you recommend for a CV Stage 1 tune? 🤔
@scottarmstrong1172Күн бұрын
@brianbayowski9265 The pilot jet is the most important and varies a little depending on the bike. On a TC88 or Evo, I usually run a 45. High altitude a 44, sea level probably a 46. That's not always perfect, but a good rule of thumb is that if it hesitates off the line or backfires a lot on deceleration, go one size bigger. If there's black soot in the exhaust, go one smaller. I usually run a 180 on the main. The other thing is to back out the mixture screw. Turn it in until it lightly seats, then back it out 2 1/2 turns. I've heard guys go from 2 to 3. I split the difference, and it seems to work for me. I don't mess with the spring or slide or anything else. I feel that those mods don't make any real difference on a relatively stock bike. That's the way I do it.
@GixxerFooКүн бұрын
Really depends what all you have done to your bike and where you live at to get a good start.
@scottarmstrong1172Күн бұрын
@GixxerFoo Sure it does. I was only talking about a stage 1, assuming stock cam(s). The 180 main and mixture screw setting has always worked well for me. The pilot jet is always just a starting point. A 45 is usually close, if not perfect. From there, I go by things like acceleration, deceleration, how it acts at idle, cold starts, hot starts, color of the plugs, basically seat of the pants tuning. I'm certainly no authority, just saying how I do it. Naturally, the bigger the cams, the more you have to feed them, and the bigger you go, the more tuning you have to do. Eventually you end up with a 42 Mikuni.

No its not the sad reality. There are hundreds of M8 Harley davidsons clocking over 100k miles just fine in stock configuration, plus or minus some slip on swaps for sound. Theres dozens of them on the HD forums, who bought an M8 harley, did basically nothing to it and they're seeing 100k~120K+ miles no problem. I'm a moderator for the Harley Davidson subreddit. We have seen multiple stock M8 posts in excess of 125k miles. No you do not need to spend all this extra money to get a harley to run right. Infact the worst thing for a Harley's reliability? Is the Owners. The era of Harley tax died a long time ago. The only "tax" is if you want a good sound or a different seat. Stock seat on my Fat Boy was quite nice and was good for hours of riding. I changed it ONLY for style purposes. This old tired idea of "gotta spend x money on a harley" is just not true anymore. It's time to update your preceptions. M8 engines are regularly posting 100k+ miles stock. Oh not to mention Harleys vastly outlast sport bike engines and its not even close.

@GixxerFoo2 күн бұрын
The liquid cooled heads are going to win that battle hands down, personally I wouldn't mine running an oil cooler on a twin cooled bike as well. Only the area around exhaust valve(s) (depending if it is twin cam or M8) on the heads are liquid cooled, the cylinders still depend on air. I would could see the benefit of having an oil cooler as well in addition to the liquid cooled heads. The oil on a twin cooled model would be cooler still than on straight air and oil cooled model.

You 100% can adjust the AFR with dynojet i do it pretty much daily. Most of the time the problem guys encounter with dynojet is getting base maps that are locked by the original tuner. Many of the "quick download" style ones are generally locked if you run into that problem fill out a tune request form with your bikes configuration. If you're not running a powervision 1 (autotune aside) most fine tune adjustments will have to be done on a computer and then reflashed if you do have a PV1 you can make on the spot percentage based changes to the AFR with the tuner. ::edit:: i just realized you were talking specifically about the PV4 aside from ease of use for guys that may be new to EFI tuning those things are in my opinion not worth the money the PV3 and PV1 are far better functionally and are still available for most bikes they just lack Bluetooth functionality.
@GixxerFooКүн бұрын
That's a great point, you're right! Most of the issues with the after-market tuners are the base map limitations.

In California (of course), getting a brand new Harley does not mean you can get a tuner right away. You have to wait about a year before California approves the new tuner that goes with your Harley and then afterwards the dealer will sell it to you. But after a year of riding stock, then adding the tuner, plus V&H slip-ons and a high flow air cleaner, and stage 2 cam...you can really tell the difference! It's worth the cost. Even the Harley tech said if he could afford it he would do it to his bike. A brand new automobile would be ready to roll, but not a Harley. It is what it is.

Merry Christmas. I just bought my first Harley. 06 883. It is still stock. I want to put a different exhaust. I found a set of Screaming Eagles 2 into 2 that came off an 08 883. Other than pluging the O2 holes will I need to tune it?
@GixxerFooКүн бұрын
Being a 2006 you have a carbed bike so you'll need to re-jet the carburetor. Fortunately re-jetting a carb is a lot cheaper than having to get an FI tuner.
@ctsnider88Күн бұрын
@GixxerFoo well, that could be fun. I'm already running 45-180. Should I upgrade the hotbox intake also?
@megastick9324Күн бұрын
I’m an old wrench, I can tune a carb to run nearly as smooth as FI. I’ll stick with the old carb bikes and zero issues. Twin cams into the 2000s still ran carbs on some. I never intend to mess with full computer , locked out, government issue engines, so I’m all good here.
@GixxerFooКүн бұрын
It's getting bad with electronics the more they advance in engine control on the newer bikes. We have less and less and control over everything on the machines anymore.
@megastick9324Күн бұрын
@ exactly, that’s why I have zero interest in them. Being an old guy, bikes , to me , are supposed to be a more intimate , hands on kind of experience. The computers are totally from mandates and not needed. They take away too much of a bikes personality and replace it with third party control. The earliest FI bikes could still be tweaked some. But carbed bikes give full ownership back to the rider.

I installed the Fi2000 on my Fat Bob which comes from the factory with the stage 1 - 103ho. Along with the high flow slip-ons I'd already installed, I woke it up seat of the pants tuning style. The most important improvement though was I eliminated the off the line spark knock by fattening up the low circuit. Over all it's a ripper, like riding a Fat Sportster with the missing 6th gear!

Gixxer foo , I have a 2012 Road king police I don’t know if they do any tuning on the police bike before they sell them to an agency. Mine seems to have plenty of power, but I haven’t done anything to it. It’s still stock. What do you think?
@GixxerFooКүн бұрын
Those bikes have the stock Harley tune, they used to have a 103 years ago when the 88 and 96 was all you could get. Then it was the 114. I believe the 2012 models might of been what was to be the future 103HO with the hotter cam from the factory.

I just picked up a 2020 Lowrider S and its stock besides cosmetics and pipes. Any recommendations on which route I should take for a tuner/tune? Wasn't planning on doing any motor work but I would prefer it to not run lean like stated in the video.
@GixxerFooКүн бұрын
I would pick up a Power Vision, I used to like FuelPak but they are so limited in what they can do.
@Lemmon714_Күн бұрын
I had my Ninja 1000sx flashed because they all come as lean as possible from the factory. It only gave 25% until 8000rpms. It was like riding a different bike. It gives me all the power now.

That's exactly what I was referring to!! You paid for a liter bike and not getting what you paid for. I discovered this on my friends ZH2 when he got his tuned. That went from level 2 ridiculous to just plain stupid lol.

I would tune it with a PowerVision if you want more future flexibility. The FP3 is a great choice for ease of use and if you don't have any plans past an air cleaner or full exhaust later on.

Is the $1200 thundermax replacement ECM a good option for the M8?
@GixxerFooКүн бұрын
Honestly, that's the best option out there. Yes it's expensive, yes it's more involved to install with the ecm replacement and modifying the stock header for wide band 02 or buying a different exhaust. In the long run it's the best investment out there.

With many Chrome extras, the 103 Screaming Eagle kit I've always had those days I wish it had some three tone sharp looking paint job but this makes me feel right seeing this right there with maximum shine.. I can't get much of of what I want when I look to trade up in performance for the 2021117 cubic inch Lowrider S that I see locally for sale. You know it's got smooth power appeal but mine is like you see just Super Glide black and chrome. Sharp!

A lot of the issue is that everyone uses Dynojet these days. PowerVision does the the same thing as the Super Tuner, it's just different looking software. When it comes to dyno tuning it's all on the guy interpreting the data and making the changes.

I have the HD tuners/slip ons on both my M8 bikes (107 & 114) and they both fuel perfectly. Both seemed noticeably faster afterward too. The 107 ran like crap with the slip ons and the stock tune. The slip ons with the stock tune actually felt like it robbed the bike of power. Got it back in spades with the HD tuner. Keep in mind, the mfgs can't change the idle and cruising cells of the fuel map. They most definitely can and do change the cells where you crack open the throttle and accelerate. Also, the stock tune makes the idle/cruise cells put out a 14.7:1 AFR only for the stock pipes. Once you start pushing more air with slipons, that ratio goes much leaner. The HD/aftermarket tuners will increase the fuel such that the AFR will be 14.7:1 with the higher flowing exhausts. And for idle/cruising, the stoich AFR works fine.

Good morning 🌅, GixxerFoo, great territorial as per usual, every HD I HAVE HAD, I either tuned it myself or I’ve got somebody to do it for me, . And the difference is like chalk and cheese., but I must admit they all have been carburettor version, makes it a lot easier to tune yourself, and the first thing I always do is change the carb, to a HS42/45, as it is that time of year which I don’t really celebrate as such as I’m by myself, I wish you a Merry Christmas and a happy New Year, 🥳 to wherever you are in the world 🌍 🍷, from France.

In 2002, dealer told me to do the 500 miles, and bring it in for the first service. That included setting up the carb, drilling out the plug, and other things. Of course that wasn't part of that first service officially, but they did it without question or extra cost. Of course my ride is not even close to stock these days, and HD has struck me from the favorites list, LOL.

Bought a 09 1200 Sportster from an HD dealer a month ago with K&N filter and V&H short shots installed by previous owner, don't know if it had a tune on it but at low RPM's it ran like CRAP ! (runs decent once the RPM's climb) Sputtering, hesitating, no power, I put a piece of Duct Tape over about half the air filter element and took it for a test drive, ran about NINETY percent better, just a little flat spot off idle, 99% of the Sputtering is gone. I didn't need to go high tech, lol, but I've got a VIED on order so the tape is only temporary.

I have a '23 LRS 117 that came with a TBR pipe and SE tuner. Ran very well. Since put a cr483 cam and PV tuner. More than happy. I bought a '24 GSXS1000GT lately and have to say, the stock tune and fueling blows. Took it on a 2500 mile trip and anything below 4k rpm and the surging going on was super annoying. Definitely needs a flash. Have a stock Z900 with slip on that'll blow it away. All this epa crap and euro5 is messed up. Another $600 just to make it tolerable.

Bought a new Dyna Glide Twin Cam in 1999. It had super quiet exhaust. It ran lousy. The only thing I could hear was it coughing back thru the carb when I took off from idle. They said they would fix it if I paid for it. Warranty would not pay for it. So, I bought slip on headers, K and N air filter and Dino Jet kit. Sounded good, had a lot more power and still cough thru the carb. I still have the motorcycle.
