Why don't I put a drain plug at the bottom of my crank case where you found all that sludge? Seems to me I'd want to have access to that lowest spot. I'm upgrading to an S&S crank case, though, the Harley cases were fairly clean when I took them apart after 41,000 miles, is sludge buildup/ sumping going to be a problem there too? These videos are a confidence builder for when I finally get to put my 2013 103 back together (I don't have to rely totally on the service manual , though, God knows I paid enough for it). Thanks Kevin, I appreciate all the expert info!

Good job. Does it have the cylinder cut off when it gets hot? My 08 got hot in ND sitting in all those HD'S running around up there. Mine shut down the one cylinder, told my Son, exit out of this mess as soon as you can. Sturges once, probably won't ever get stuck in traffic like that again, too hard on the motor.🥴
@KevinBaxter3 жыл бұрын
Not in this year...however, there is a "hidden" table in the tuning file that would richen fuel mixture as the engine got hotter to help cool it down. Most could not access that table or even knew it existed back then so i doubt it was utilized as it could have been.

I think its great if you can find it and afford it. No additives, no ethanol, typically higher octane, no phase separation to worry about, less moisture....all great points. I am wondering why I have not seen any M8 Freewheeler trikes with sumping or oil transfer
@guyconnell22503 жыл бұрын
So he's got a non-OE camplate, it seems to have been running rich, and I bet you'll find aftermarket cams. So, like maybe most "worked on" Harleys, this bike was likely never tuned optimally.
@KevinBaxter3 жыл бұрын
it may have been tuned well for an average bike...i dont see typical damage from a "bad" tune. It may not have been appropriate for a trike though...heavy load, etc. I will be putting the cyls in torque plates. i believe it just overheated, which wouldve deformed the cylinders and created more blowby. That's my theory.

i can not blame this on the oil pump or cam plate. both looked healthy. I will be putting the cyls in torque plates. i believe it just overheated several times, which wouldve deformed the cylinders and created more blowby. That's my theory.

Every single orange cam plate I have ever seen, with any amount of miles is worn half way around just like this one. I think it is due to the design ,more specifically the wave washer between the pump gears. Combined with no seal between the pump and plate surface...junk set up. I will never use those again. Spun an engine over with the plugs out and cam cover off. Oil bleed off gushing down from pump /plate mounting surface. Just begging for scored piston skirts. Never again orange screamin beagle cam plates.

Kevin, why couldn’t a gps altimeter and thermometer be integrated into the performance module to account for air intake temperature (keeping air/fuel ratios at optimum) and altitude changes? It seems like this would improve drivability and gas mileage while maintaining peak performance, or do they currently account for this info.

I pay closest attention to cylinder head temp at the base of the spark plug. 300-320 degrees after a moderate ride with no traffic is great. If that starts creeping up to 350 and higher, valve seats can begin to fall out. This temp reading will be different than what you see with your engine temp sensor. That will always be much lower.
