My mum made this ‘new invention’ over 40 years ago. Great quilt. Not only was it warm and comfortable, i spent hours amusing myself just looking at all the different patterns on the squares of fabric.

This is beautiful. Perfect for small children to nap on off the cold floor. Great for sleep overs. This would make a great baby show gift to a new mother. Wonderful idea. It could be machine washed in the triple loader at the laundry mat whenn needed. Thank you for this great idea.

Thanks for sharing , it turned out lovely .. When I made a quilt like this I left filling the squares until after they had been sewn into rows , leaving open edges all along one side , then I filled them …so much quicker and easier .. Another one I made I didn’t stitch around the edges first I just did zig zag to join and it looked really good and saved a lot of time .. Many different methods out there to make this really great quilt / play mat / sleep mat .

My mother-in-law made one of these in the shape of a fish for my oldest daughter when she was about 3 years old ( now she’s in early 50’s) She wore it out using it every nap time. I couldn’t find a picture to add to this, but it was her most favorite thing. I later made one for my brother-in-law to take to college as his quilt . I used 5x5 inch squares to make his. This one looks really cute and brings back memories.

Oh, a puffer quilt! Made one of those back in the 70s--Simplicity had a pattern for a quilt and coordinating pillow. I wasn't too savvy on batting back then. I used some cotton and some polyester, and got a big surprise the first time I washed it. All the cotton batting lumped up.
@karamiaropiha83492 жыл бұрын
What's batting? Do you mean backing?
@almaduran452 жыл бұрын
Kara, I believe she means the stuffing inside each little pillow squares. In other words don't use 100% cotton because when it's time to wash the blanket the stuffing "cotton" will lump. Perhaps it's better to use a synthetic material such as polyester.
@ellenhofer33432 жыл бұрын

@@karamiaropiha8349 From quiltipedia: Quilt Batting is the layer of insulation between the quilt top and back your quilt. This is the middle layer of your "quilt sandwich" that adds warmth to the quilt and can make your quilting design's puffy. Many types of batting are available in a variety of fiber content and lofts (thickness of the batting) and sizes.

This is a tutorial that I need but didn't know I needed it until I saw it! I'm going to make a bunch of these for my family's camping trips! I want to do a little research on the filling, though, because I find that poly fiber fill smooshes flat after a while (it's a big issue with the arm rests on my couch, so I'm kind of annoyed by it at this point). Great tutorial…I immediately saw a “cat bed” variation in my head…Use 5 squares across for the first thee rows, then only three rows across for the last row. Sew it together just as she says, but when you get to the last row of three, pull up the sides and sew them together with the back row. Already, my mind is still going…you can stay simple while still making an easy adjustment. I will likely go with smaller squares and maybe make a small front lip too. ❤️

My Mom made one in the mid-1970s. She used various scraps to cut six inch squares and stuffed each one with cut up (washed) torn pantyhose. While her neighbors made both sides different, my Mom used the same fabric for both squares. The centers of each pillow had a peach color yarn tie to keep the filler from bunching during machine washing. Her 7 year old granddaughter helped turn each pillow inside out after school. This granddaughter's daughter now has a Bachelor's degree in Fine Art and is working for a museum.
