I recommend learning the hiragana and katakana alphabets before going to Japan. They look hard but really aren't, I recommend the tofugu guide to learning both. With this guide I learned them in two days. Katakana is mostly used for words of non-Japanese origin (like pretty much english words) so if you can read katakana you can pretty much guess what something is in English. Most foods are written in katakana. Using the vending machines is really not hard, since you usually have an image of something rather than text to choose.

You can still be an introvert, at their restaurants where you just choose dishes that come round on a conveyor belt... there see others where you choose from a touch screen at each table first. You don't have to eat in the wind at a place like this.
