It's just like the old days. The only safety equipment I saw was a masking tape X on the windshield. I guess obscuring the driver's vision was considered a must. LOL

narration slower was good, those guys have 60 years to reel in to talk. I was thinking of the time frame... a six cylinder with more bearings on the crank literally gave the first 8cyls a run for their money. I spotted one in the vid, looked like an offy intake, etc. Interesting history, great show.

They don't really advertise the fact they've cut a mile off the track from what was done in the '52-'53 and '54. The old literature says "2 1/8 mile course, rising almost 1,000 feet." Using google maps path distance measuring tool and altitude curser readout, the original course would have gone to where the cars turn around--because that matches with 2 1/8th mile and almost 1,000'. But they flag and time you now a mile before that turn around. The current course is less than a mile and a half, and rises about 500 feet. This must be an un-advertised law enforcement requirement to keep speeds down? (the part cut off is mostly straight). Remember this is held with no helmet requirement, no roll bar requirement, and no competition license requirement. They go noticeably slow....the "times" appear the same as in the old days, but they were going down a straight a mile further back in the day. I wonder about all the people not behind barriers that would stop an out of control car, and I wonder about the speeds attained. It's not really a hill climb, it's a fun cruise up the mountain. I think they should step it up a bit.... I agree with thejabawolcky and he is correct, this is more of a car show posing as a hill climb. Fun party, fun event, but it's a cruise up the mountain. Very slow speeds. I think they must warn the drivers not to exceed some limits.

These guys didn't have all the performance part suppliers that are available today. They actually had to understand what mechanically is going on, devise some theories and fabricate their own parts to make their ideas come to reality.
