Who? The judge?
@jamesyoungblood6231
@jamesyoungblood6231 3 жыл бұрын
A judge should never interrupt an attorney's opening statement without substancial and compelling cause. I think the judge's interruption could have been grounds for a mistrial or at least an issue on appeal for abuse discretion. The judge was handed a note and in a very short time interrupted the trial. This was inappropriate. The judge should have waited until the opening was over. Further, Columbo was making a disruptive scene during opening which was grounds mistrial or appeal because it was distracting to the jury. In any event, the attorney should be given the right to start the trial over again.

Inclined to agree. Artistic license on full display. You just knew Columbo was going to interrupt court proceedings. This is further out-of-place when we know Columbo must be fully aware of court ettiquette being called on as a witness for many homicide trials. But, as someone here said, it is television - and television follows its own rules and not those of real life. That said, someone just blowing off your comment with "it's just a show" is plain ignorant of the fact that fans like to discuss these things out of interest.

Funny, Dabney Coleman, playing the attorney here (the bad guy), played a cop who escorts the twin killers (Martin Landau) away in another Columbo, years earlier, Dabney had a full head of hair then. And the bailiff who hands the note to the judge in the courtroom played a cop who escorts Oscar Werner for killing his mother in law using duplicate video tapes to fool the guard. And the attorney's associate who enters the room here at 03:45 is Peter Falk's real life wife. This show is amazing.

Stepping into the well (that's the room between the lawyers and the judge) will get you tackled to the ground. The murderer usually puts on a good show as if they are shocked, upset, grief stricken, etc. In the end, Columbo takes them down. (After embarrassing them, of course). That's the funny part.

I note the signs in the morgue that read "NO SMOKING, NO EATING." I get the no-smoking reminder. But why the "NO EATING" message? A morgue isn't exactly the kind of place to feel hungry or provide inspiration for the appetite.
