You know Tony, I like you, thanks for sharing me with your nephew. I really don’t want a bed rep so I try to be as realistic as possible and I don’t want to put out info that make it seem like you can make money but you can’t. With the CDL I have now I make better money and I’m about to release those numbers. But I did start non cdl and now that I know what I know, I highly recommend CDL from the get go.

@@Babylionhotshot I got my CDL after I retired to find where to retire. I chose the Smokies, Sevierville, TN. I discovered I LOVE OTR and I'm just coasting along until I decide to fully retire. You're an impressive young man. Thank you for sharing your experiences and knowledge. I have friends who do content, and I know it's hard, time consuming work. Best of luck to you. 👍🚛🇺🇸

Been trucking for over 15 years. Don’t take cheap freight. Bad part is brokers know you are new when they run your numbers. Brokers will take advantage because they know you don’t have much of an option. Bills don’t stop coming. Take cheap freight it’ll come back to bite you. You’ll only bring down the market.

Gotta do what you gotta do. No matter what people say. They know they had to take a couple partials to make it work. I’m leased under someone right now but I know when my MC is active I’m just as screwed. I’m not quitting imma make it through.

Seems like the insurance alone is a killer. I met a guy in SC that does hotshot with a F350. He started a couple years ago. First year insurance was $16,000, 2nd year was $12,000 due to good safety record. So safety is highly important! Accidents and traffic violations could put you out of business due to increasing insurance rates. Thanks for laying all this out for all to see

My dad started out driving in an old Ford F350 stake bed. We brought that truck home (early 80’s) for a few hundred bucks. We took off the stake bed, made a diamond plate deck, installed a hitch, new paint (he was a former body shop mechanic so that was an easy job to do) new tires, and freshened up the engine with hoses spark plugs wires etc. I honestly don’t remember the size trailer he had but he was able to make $ with a paid for truck. Having payments is gonna drastically eat into your profits, it’s gonna force you to stay out longer and longer. You’re going to have to pass up on certain loads because it won’t cover your costs. I know it’s hard to find trucks that can handle the abuse and still be affordable.

Bro, I’ve played this game for a living. You need a CDL if you’re trailer is rated 10,001 lbs or more, regardless of the truck weight. 100% fact. Under 26,001 total combined or 10,001 on the trailer. You just didn’t know, but now you do.

My initial start up cost was $ 70,000 had to make $10,000 month just to cover all expenses. Ins. Was 2,300 month. Needless to say had bad luck did not end well. Open 2 yrs. Ran little over one yr. Just because it took months to go through all the red tape and paying all expenses before we could ever make first dollar. Eat through about 1/2 start up cost in the first 6 months not running still going through red tape. Once we Officially started we only had about 1/2 start up left. Was not enough to cover. 10 months later shut down. Not enough start up capital you need enough for 1 hole yr. Operating expense. I'd say no less than $100,000 to get started after paying your $70,000.

You don’t need a 3/4 ton truck to do hot shot work. There is a guy in Texas who became famous for his Toyota Tundra racking up over 1,000,000 miles with only one mechanical failure at over 750,000 miles. His transmission would no longer engage in reverse. Anyone who does not believe this can simply do a search “1,000,000 mile Toyota Tundra”! Even TFL Truck did a story on it.

Cheap freight is worth it if you already have a good paying load on your truck and your looking to offset fuel cost with a lower rate load. I’m in school getting my CDL, and honestly, my cost of operation will be very low and I’ve been building a business plan to be profitable at 1.25/mile rates. Just have to want it bad enough to succeed. Hotshot is only a small portion of my upcoming trucking company. Private hauling, I’ll be around 2.50-3.50 mile or more depending on factors, but to keep the trucks running, we’ll hit some load boards until we have our own client base. There is so much you can do in this segment, Freight Rv transport Trailer transport Car hauling Equipment hauling Construction supply hauling Be creative and the list goes on and on. There is always a way to make money when it comes to transporting. Don’t let the low freight costs persuade you. Learn how to make those numbers work or learn to negotiate to a number that does work for you.

A torque multiplier is much cheaper than the impact if you need to save the money.
