So the death doula oracle. This is one of my absolute favorite decks. This deck is not death focused and can by any one. This deck actually focuses on meditation more than anything. And some of the prompts are laying to rest what no longer serves and getting over that. The art work is double exposed film images, so they're pictures taken on top of pictures. The production quality of this deck is incredible. And for larger sized cards they are really sturdy and very flexible at the same time.

I'm absurdly excited about the Buffy deck! I'm so glad to hear the minors are supposed to be scenic!!! I was getting it anyway, Buffy is the one Fandom deck that I would just suck it up and get over lazy pips, but fully scenic is my preference. I love the art style and color palette, and the choices for the cards we've seen so far are chef's kiss perfect!

So my hot take: I would much rather purchase a fan-made tarot deck that is unofficial with hand crafted art than purchasing any AI deck. Corporations that own big franchises like Star Trek, Marvel or Buffy are doing just fine financially. But AI aren’t often steals from indie artists when generating its images. I’d love other people’s thoughts on this!

We use ai art. We go out of our way to not look like other cards. I had an artist submit a few different styles last night to see if we liked any of them. He blew us away. It was so amazing I sent them out to the team and they were like buy his work before someone else does. Lol Not all ai is stolen. I would rather see ai done right than “public domain”.

This morning I said I wasn't buying any more decks until I could get my hands on The Way of the Panda (depending if Kimberley's going to print a more mass market version). Then I watch this and I'm so, so tempted with the Tarot of Tales. It's not my normal style, but I love the concept so much and really think it would work well with my coaching clients. I'm also rather tempted with Buffy. Angel is more of my fandom, but there are enough cross-overs with characters. Looking forward to all the things you've got planned for it! If you do get Tarot of Tales, would love a full walk through please!

Tarot of Tales arrived to me 2 days ago (I preordered months ago) & it is absolutely beautiful. Art, card stock & the book has drawn me in immediately. I have had Buffy on preorder for almost a year (due in 10 days) I absolutely LOVE the looks of it. Drusilla as the Empress has made my day, year, life 💜 Oz the hermit, Willow & dark Willow in the appropriate places, the only one I am waiting for is Spike. As long as he is a star ... ooo yeah have we seen the star? I adore the Death Doula. It is one for quiet contemplation, for me. 😁

I am RIGHT THERE WITH YOU on the Buffy tarot!!!! It is definitely one of my biggest fandoms (with Firefly...and Dollhouse *grin), and I knew I would own this deck even if it was a pip deck, but I was SO happy to see a flip through recently and squee over all the scenic cards. Thank you for another great hot take! After watching, I've decided to finally back the 11:11 Oracle. Not sure why I didn't as I have her HOTE (2 copies, lol) and the Uncover YPL oracle. That puts me at backing two KS (the other is Wisdom of Pooh) in one day. On top of that, I also just now added pre-orders for the Buffy, Tarot of Tales, and Sacred Medicine decks. I wasn't sure until today if I wanted the Sacred Medicine right away because I just started Asha's book, 13 Moons. I have almost finished reading the introduction pages, and I've already been brought to tears. I'm so glad this deck is making its way into our community. Now I'm off to pick out at least five decks to leave my collection. Thanks again!

I feel the same about the iching oracle deck. I love the concept and I love gongbi style art, but I cannot support AI decks. I'm not against technology being used for art, I feel like people misunderstand the pushback against AI art because they think that's what people have a problem with. It's not, it's the stolen art being used by ai that is the problem. I don't feel comfortable buying decks that are made with stolen art personally. Also I'm SO excited for the Squid Cake tarot and the aesthetic of being ugly cute 😂💗I've been wanting to study marseille for so long I think it's the right time!

I'm sorry... can I complain here for a second? Since this is Hot Takes and all! I'm suuuuper disappointed with all of the Kickstarter decks. For Aphrodite, the images are beautiful and all, but I disagree that 47 USD/63 CAD plus shipping is reasonable for a deck of public domain images. I know that there's work that goes into finding, selecting and arranging free images, and that there's money in getting decks printed... but I'm just super uncomfortable with the idea of selling images that are meant to be free in general, and certainly for a price that high. My issue with AI art isn't whether it can be considered "art", whether it should be the same price as original work, whatever. My issue is that AI art generators skim and sample original images with no credit or payment to original artists (who, unlike artists of public domain images, are still alive and trying to make a living). So selling work generated by AI is basically like profiting off stolen work with a few extra steps. The pips on the Arcane Warrior tarot are pretty, though I'm super disappointed in the lack of diversity. No body type diversity, no racial diversity, no trans rep... a shame since the pips are so well arranged. I mean, I respect it way more because at least it's not AI art! And I took a look at the Rustic Fortune and it does not seem to be original art -as such-. That is, it's clipart that's been arranged and manipulated in Photoshop. Which is okay I guess... it just feels weird that the artist has made nine decks so far in this fashion. I just don't know if I'd ever be able to get behind work that's pumped out at such a fast rate. OKAY I'm super sorry, don't mean to bring down the mood or anything, I know I'm being kinda harsh here and there's probably good sides to all these decks but I had to get all that off my chest :/

Thanks again Lisa for doing another hot takes video. I had to look into if there was a walkthrough on the Buffy Vampire Slayer Tarot.....and there was! Knowing Insight Editions was the publisher, I was hesitant, but this one is shaping up to be the first Insight Editions tarot deck I buy. Loved Buffy growing up. You asked about the Mystic Mondays deck, the best way I research if I am going to buy a deck is go to KZbin search the name of deck and then click the filter button and click the sort by upload date on the right. I usually do this a few days - two weeks before the release date to see any flipthrough/walkthroughs. I found a video on the Astro Alignment deck, saw a few cards and the guidebook. It wasn't bad, but gave an idea on if the deck was for me or not.

I just found a full flip through of the Buffy deck. The video is called "Buffy the Vampire Slayer Tarot Deck (Official) - Full Flip Through - No Commentary" I'm so excited!! This deck will be kept with all of my wife's Buffy graphic novels. It is something we can enjoy together which is awesome because tarot isn't her thing like it is mine.

I'm soooo tempted to get the Aphrodite Tarot - it's Local and super pretty. I'm a bit torn because all (or almost all) female decks are usually not for me... I also thought about getting the change tarot, i like that they changed the AI generated Art with photoshop. I decided against getting it though. I need to spend a little bit less - and I already got a few I Ching decks already. (plus I got another AI deck just because I was curious and it's not for me. The problem I have with the Arcane Warrior deck is that the artist repeatedly takes the same body and then sticks a different head on it instead of doing original art work for each card…just seems like a slap dash effort to knock out a deck to me.

ETA: they're saying Amazon wasn't the original plan but because of the KickStarter they were able to release it after KS as I'm understanding it. Timing is whatever but IDK, I still really like the deck so not going to let it bother me. (Plus it appears some/most are Amazon Vine reviews which is solely an Amazon thing, they get items early to review through some program or whatever. Not sure the creators have any say in that)

I don't like AI for anything "artistic". It is not enough for me that something that is meant to be creative is attractive. It cannot be empty and without meaning - it cannot just be pretty algorithms. The value of art is the meaning given to it by the humans that create it. It is not creative if it has no meaning unless the pointlessness of things is the meaning (e.g. with absurdist art/plays). For Tarot, if the artist did nothing but feed instructions to an AI tool then nope. I would take any low effort ugly tarot deck designed from scratch by a human than a pretty but meaningless tarot deck that was AI-programmed by one. Not sure if that made sense? Basically, AI terrifies me but I have faith because there's a reason why we like art and the human being at the other end of it is part of that reason.
