The hose adapter is not needed. Just screw on your garden hose. You also need to power off the water heater and run hot water out of a nearby faucet so it doesn't create a vacuum. When you're done, keep that hot water faucet on until no more air comes out.
@akanesoratobu88892 жыл бұрын
when you say power off meaning put the setting to pilot? Also do i keep the faucet open the entire time?
@JasonHoningford2 жыл бұрын
@@akanesoratobu8889 Sorry mine is electric so I can't answer that. Flushing is in the manual though. I'd follow that over any KZbin or comment. The step this video added was a totally unrelated garden hose adapter. You can screw on a garden hose directly to this. Some people actually drain the entire tank so they turn off the elements and water. Here this video is just getting rid of some of the sediment off the bottom.
@monkeyking-self-proclaimed70502 жыл бұрын
@@akanesoratobu8889 Yes, you have to turn it off or put it in pilot so you are not boiling the tank while draining. Yes, and open the hot water side of the faucet. You can open a few faucet so it will drain better. Usually, I open the one closes to the water heater.
@monkeyking-self-proclaimed70502 жыл бұрын
You don't need the adapter but it's a good idea. The garden hose is metal and the one on Rheem water heaters are plastic. That's the one thing I don't like. Most of my water heater are metal.

Soooo this is why it has a small leak...it needs to be drained? We bought the home and Rheem was already installed which I didn’t know much about this brand because it being an upgrade from Whirlpools. It started to leak a few days ago from that spigot.
@scarfinger685 жыл бұрын
his is only partially draining the tank. If you empty the tank, it would make sense to shut off the burner
@j_freed4 жыл бұрын
That's true for complete draining in severe cases, but for routine half year mantenance only a couple of gallons may run the tank all clear of sediment as shown here. I just learned this today.

How do you shut off the burner
@4seeableTV3 жыл бұрын
@@hrlady Move it to the 'pilot' position. So the pilot stays lit, but it's not heating the water. Then back on 'On' after the draining.

I work at a Home Depot as a merchandiser and we met with a Rheem rep. He said (for gas models at least), to flush you just connect the garden hose and let it drain with everything still on and running. The purpose is only to get any scale or sediments out of the bottom of the tank. This is the yearly maintenance process and is super simple.

Flushing the tank is not the same as draining the tank, right? So when I want to flush my tank I always leave the water & gas on. Have done this for over 30 yrs, never any issue. The only issue I have now is that we have a Rheem tank. When I add the garden hose shut off valve and garden hose and open up the hose shut off valve, no water flows from the tank. Is this because something is missing? Maybe the adapter that didn't come with the tank??
@luv2ride5642 жыл бұрын
Firgured it out, I had to turn the large grey turn handle. I had looked at it, but didn't want to do anything "wrong" and couldn't find anything that said to do that step. It was the missing step :)

Flushing your hot water tank is one of that. And, replacing your furnace filter quarterly or twice a year, depends on how dirty it is. Also, replacing your water filter quarterly, if you have one. Sanitizing your water dispenser twice a year or yearly, if you have one. Cleaning AC coils before you start it on summer. Test Carbon monoxide and smoke detectors, replace battery if needed if battery operated. Clean your range hood filters. Clean your refrigerator coils. These are some of the basic maintenance of your home, you check out google if they have list... I hope it helps...

I noticed you did not turn off the cold water valve or the gas to the heater. The Rheem manual says to do that. I can only seem to get water to come out of the drain valve when the cold water valve is on. But the only water that comes out of the hose is cold. Shouldn't it be hot?

My Rheem manual states that failure to turn off the gas will possibly lead to unit failure. It makes sense... the burner is heating up an empty (once drained) vessel and will burn/melt components
