I think the easiest way to communicate why Vert was chosen as leader over the others (at least, narratively speaking) is to explicitly show his ingenuity outside of the loop and with jump jets. Like, if Dr. Tezla put all of the special abilities in all of the cars, they could show Vert's out of the box thinking when it comes to clearing paths or combining abilities. Or, he can roughly predict how he can get from point a to point b without damaging his car or the likes. Almost like a walmart Lani, but his ability to apply his theories or utilize them in ways Lani isn't used to (like with the lava leg), separates himself from Lani's book smarts with his street smarts. After all, in order to due complex skate tricks across multiple paths, you need some form of calculating geometry and timing. And if that sounds like a stretch, remember that professional gamers outside of rts or the like do this on the daily. Heck, Vert would've been a professional speedrunner or at least a sim driver if World Race was made today. Him only getting out of situations because of a very specific mechanic that not everyone has just cheapens his accomplishments.

gig doesnt race, but if i had to guess for major wheeler and gelroum probs high b to low a tier, with clyp drones its hard to tell but probs high c low b

Quick thoughts from me having only seen the movies: tezla c or maybe d tier (couldnt beat leg 1 himself, needed "a new breed of driver"), vert's dad probably A or possibly S tier (silencerz leader so probably good, theory that verts car was meant for him so wouldve been a world race team leader), gig idrk does he have any driving feats? When he attacked tezla in acceleracers did he control a car? Probably D tier for gig, driving drones in world race are probably d tier as well, they get messssed up by the world race drivers and have to rely on weapons to accomplish anything, lastly Gelorum is almost definitely S tier and only refrained from winning herself because it was prevented by the accelerons
