I never knew all the background of HW Colour-Changers, I’m quite surprised to hear they go back that far. My very first Colour-Changer car was a Premium NASCAR my aunt bought me from America back in 2007 when I was 9. I used to have a Colour-Change set with a random car that you could fire into the back of a wrecked tanker, and the water would cause the car to change to look corroded! I also love the blind bag versions of the Colour-Changers, the ones where you get two cars in each barrel covered in yellow paint which washed off in cold water.

Matter of fact, I actually have a VHS recording of the original airing of the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers Season 1 episode "Crystal of Nightmares". This episode originally aired on February 14, 1994. I recently rewatched that episode on February 14, 2024, exactly 30 years after the original airing! The "Color FX" commercial is included in the commercial breaks of that MMPR episode.

Only difference is that mine is a reissue of that casting from the early 2020s. As the casting name implies, it's modeled after a 1990 Ford Thunderbird NASCAR Stock Car. You can see for yourself that there's no door lining on the sides of the casting. NASCAR racing cars have their doors welded shut to better maintain the car's overall integrity in the event of a crash. The only way to get in and out of the car is to climb through the driver's side window.

I also had a play set that was a spray paint factory, and you'd push cars through spray them with warm water then it's be a different color. I don't know for sure, but ifI had to guess, the sponge was so that you could change colors of select parts of the car by sponging different temperatures of water on it (like an early iteration of the ice pen). Especially since part of the marketing for these cars was "making your own design/pattern".
