“You will tell them that I DID NOTHING!” the general shouted in anger and desperation. Watching someone who considers themselves powerful being reduced to utter powerlessness is perhaps one of the most gratifying things to witness.

In real life, General Bizimungu ended up fleeing Rwanda shortly after these events when his side lost the civil war. He ended up in Angola where he was working with yet another rebel movement attempting to overthrow a country's government when he was captured by the Angolan authorities. He is now serving a 30 year prison sentence.

'ARE YOU STUPID, GENERAL? you sit here with five stars on your chest....who do you think they're coming after?' Such a powerful statement in so many ways. I don't think that the character of General Bizimungu ever considered the idea that he would be considered as a war criminal which, as Don Cheadle's character points out is extraordinarily dumb

"I will pay you to shoot my family" This is what really happened to Tatiana's (Paul's wife) father during the genocide. Apparently, the interahamwe liked to kill the Tutsis by carving up their victims and the sad truth is that Tatiana's father paid the militia to shoot him instead of letting him die so slowly. This scene wasn't just added to emphasize Paul's desperation.

Obviously most of his crimes could not be proven in court because he killed most witnesses. But some of the crimes were proven, such as this one: During a meeting on 4/7/94 Gen. Augustin Bizimungu told Hutu militiamen that “You should start killing all Tutsi people. Start with your own neighbors before moving into other areas of the commune.” He then assured them that weapons had been placed at their disposal and he promised to provide them with fuel for burning down the homes of Tutsi people. The following day he made good his promise by distributing fuel to the militiamen. Following Bizimungu’s speech, the militiamen killed 150 Tutsi people in Rwankeri Sector, Ruhengeri.
