The 4th movie should’ve been about the biggest major issue the series never acknowledged. It’s that if Johnny continues being a human, he will die of old age before Mavis becomes a fully grown Woman and his son actually growing up because he is not an immortal Vampire. They could’ve make the story take place 15 - 20 years later after 3, a big timeskip. You see Johnny getting older whilst Mavis and his Son stay the same and that causes major concerns. Johnny starts to panic because the thought of him simply dying of old age in, what we can assume is the blink of an eye as a Vampire terrifies Johnny, especially since he probably will never witness his son be fully grown up. And the story could revolve around Johnny now, a story of if he decides to become a monster/ vampire too, basically throwing away everything they’ve been building up with „humans & monsters living together“ or if he stays human and accepts his inevitable fate.

Dracula wasn’t scared to give Johnny the hotel because he’s human since that was said and done in the 1st movie, it was because Johnny’s plans for the hotel were almost offensive to Dracula. The hotel was built immediately after the wife’s passing and designed to protect monsters and it just has so much history and you can tell he’s too emotionally invested in it to just give it to a young hippy kid who plans on essentially changing everything about it.
@eunicelim70623 жыл бұрын
Agree, and the worst part is that mavis supported Johnny and gets mad at her dad. Like are you okay girl? Your dad built this hotel himself with all the hardwork and everything. She got mad at his dad for “lying” but she didn’t get mad at Johnny for all the mistakes and clumsiness he has done. Like if he didnt overreact and pressuring Drac these whole thing won’t happen. Plus Drac was going to give it to them but Johnny acted and told him about the changes that will happen, that made drac change his mind.
@moondivine22883 жыл бұрын
@@eunicelim7062 Actually Mavis had every right to get angry at her dad for lying to her. Yes Johnny stepped out of line but, unfortunately because he’s a idiot he talks before he thinks. But he’s also the same guy that would probably wouldn’t make any hotel decisions without consulting his wife first. If Dracula had concerns he should have brought it up with Mavis and I don’t know have proper communication. Johnny didn’t pressure Dracula into anything. He just got too excited. He eventually realized he got out of line and turned himself into a monster because he knew how much the hotel means to Mavis. Personally I rather people point out my mistakes than lying to me. Then I know what to fix.

But if the story was about Jonny trying to prove that he has what it takes to be a monster, trying to prove that in another life he could have fit in, only to realize that he couldn’t live up to the standard but that Drac and the gang still care about him, would have made a better story in my opinion. Like, make the story more Jonny central, with the side monsters on their own B plot where they enjoy being human for a while, being able to fit in with the world and all. Why did they even need the accepting Johnny as a human and road trip adventure? It sounds like it had an organic plot it could have focused on. Dracula Retiring could have been the entire plot. You could explore how Mavis running the hotel is different than Dracula, have some moments between Johnny and Dracula that build off the previous three films, explore what Dracula wants to do in retirement. Would he pick up a new hobby that could be worked into some jokes? Keep dropping by to check on the hotel? There's plenty of plot and comedy to mine there.

The REAL reason is cuz of his immature, chaotic personality, n Drac was just worried that he'll literally destroy the hotel which is honestly a valid fear. I mean the first thing Johnny does in the movie is nearly destroy the anniversary party with his dangerous stunts had it not been for Drac fixing everything at literal last second. Then he becomes a dragon being unaware of his surroundings n proceeds to wreck things along his path at the hotel. So yeah, I wouldn't trust Johnny with my property either. When it comes to years of animation, they just had to start 2022 on a note that low with Bayformania (that’s what I’m calling it because I also hate the Bayformers movies while people praise them as well as the Hotel Transylvania movies, maybe even the fourth/finale), and I thought they learned to break the curse of the first animations of the year being bad with The Lego Batman Movie in 2017, but I guess you can say they didn’t REALLY learn anything from the trend of the mid-2010s (2013 to 2016) that starting in January, animations have to pander to kids instead of treat animation in general like the medium it always will be (2013: Escape from Planet Earth (starring Harvey Weinstein who obviously wrongfully favoured Sarah Jessica Parker (and Chris Noth) instead of Kim Cattrall or ANY other Sex and the City actor, for that matter!!!). 2014: The Nut Job 1 (the return of Scorch Supernova, but this time, he’s a misogynistic squirrel with hero complex that is as hatable or WORSE than Surly). 2015: Strange Magic. 2016 (aka Worst of the Worst): Norm of the North) after all! Let’s just pray that next year (2023) won’t start off like 2022 which will HOPEFULLY end well with Illumination’s Mario movie with more personality and skills than just “Oh look, kiddies! Even with Anya Taylor Joy as Princess Peach in a non-stereotypically feminine voice, she’s getting kidnapped over and over again instead of actually fighting back like Samus outside of Other M! And that’s just the tip of the iceberg, because we got juvenile gags, the usual Illumination design, no thought or effort whatsoever and of course, Mario forgetting Princess Peach’s date and everyone including his enemies and even his friends turning on him! Let’s play this on Nickelodeon after the early 2020s!”.

Characters: 1/10 (Words cannot describe just how LITERALLY despicable and one-dimensional the cast is, but they did it! They made the characters very unbearable, even by the low standards of something that is Hotel Transylvania!) *2/10 (yes, I actually DO think that AniMat will hate Hotel Transylvania 4 THIS much, unlike most people who would likely think that he wouldn’t go beyond just giving it the Seal of Garbage)*

Dracula's problem with leaving the hotel to Johnny was that he's a spaz and his wacky ideas would ruin the hotel, not that he's human. I didnt like this movie either. While watching it i had so many questions Was Jonny always this insufferable? Hasnt drac already learned to accept and tolerate Jonny before? Why was everything so frustrating??? Like first jonny almost killing multiple people at a party, fucking around with drac making him panic and not give them the hotel, jonny turning into a monster and running around the hotel to find mavis knocking everything down, the whole trip to the crystal (that was just basically dracula torture), and so much more. I felt so mad at everything. I hated how they made every other character besides Jonny and dracula side characters. I mean they just completely erased denis, mavis brought everyone that was humanified to go get jonny and drac because she didn't think it was safe to keep them at the hotel, but she didn't bring her own son?? And that one dog girl, all her other siblings were there, why was she excluded??? I feel like they exaggerated jonnys character, cause i genuinely can't remember him being so annoying. Why did they even bring the pups and the wife though?? In fact, thinking back on watching the movie, I cant remember any significant reason why the whole cast was brought along the trip. That one excuse of “its too dangerous at the hotel” is kind of trumped when they’re brought into a literal monster death trap and then onto an excursion to save two people that they barely had a hand in saving. What a wonky script.

Also, a minor nitpick, I’m not sure the timeline adds up. At the beginning of the movie it’s supposed to be the 125th anniversary of the hotel, but the hotel is a 5-10 years younger than Mavis, who was turning 118 in the first movie. That would make this movie take place somewhere around 15 years after the first, which doesn’t make sense since Johnny, who was 21 in the first movie, hasn’t aged at all.

This coulda worked if it was about Jonny eventually figuring out that he wont live as long as his wife and son with him being human. Drac could have easily trusted him by this point after 3 movies but knew that jonny wouldnt have a long life as his grandson and daughter and therefore didnt pick him. Therefore, Jonny getting hit with a monster ray to become a monster, that woulda worked better as that was prob the final problem they had with the monster and human family. But again seemed like they messed it up. and in the end drac giving it to jonny anyways cause hes the most quaified despite his shorter lifespan. Theres so much they coulda done with this >_> they also didnt have to turn all the monsters to humans as well to keep the message straight. And if jonny wanted longer life he coulda let his son or wife bite him and become a vampire but again that woulda solved it instantly.

Honestly you would think with Drac having a new love and Mavis and Jonny having a son, the dynamic would change a bit. Drac was (like in the first movie) obsessed with Mavis and not really anyone else, I didn’t really feel much connection with his “love” and grandson. Also we didn’t see Mavis and Jonny grown into parents either. Their son was just running around doing his own thing, they didn’t have much screen time together. They literally all left him at the castle when they all went off... felt very disconnected with the any story or character development in the other movies.

Haven’t finished the movie but so far, the movie feels like a really long, dragged-out short or cartoon episode. The third movie ended well enough but if they were gonna make a fourth, they should’ve at least brought back the original director and actors (for Drac and Frank). And as you said, the previous movies were about acceptance. Part 1 was literally all about Drac accepting Johnny, so it sucks for them to undo all of that, pretending Drac has always had a problem with him. Also, what’s with Johnny being so annoying? In the first and second movie (especially first), he was cool and interesting as a character. In this one however, he is insufferable. He just never stops talking and making dumb jokes (no offense to Andy Samberg, only the script). I genuinely cannot believe this guy’s a dad. So far, the movie’s really boring and hasn’t made me laugh at all yet. And yeah, the animation is really weird. This movie looks just like a 3D cartoon but with a big budget.

I finished it, and the movie feels wasted; it has characters and ideas it doesn't want to use. While the extended travel montage was going on, I kept expecting Mavis to get a story arc where she gets used to the responsibility of running her dad's hotel. Like, imagine her having to deal with the human gang and slowly realizing how difficult it was for Drac to get squishy meatbags to safely stay in the hotel. Also, Van Helsing feels like he needs more to do. I kept expecting him to take over the hotel with a giant mutant hamster. Then, the movie kind of forgot that he existed.

The thought of having to lose him, just as her father has grieved so long over Martha... Mavis can barely imagine that and wants to find a solution. She uses Helsing's device on herself and she becomes human. She struggles though as a human, being incredibly uncomfortable in her new body (practically just like Drac in the movie) and at the end she turns back she and Johnny accept that what time they might be blessed with together, they are gonna make the most of it. And you can still have all the monsters to humans stuff in between!

For me, it's two things. One, the characters in the movie spoke Spanish in Brasil. Do I need to say more on that? Answer: no. My other problem is that it feels weirdly short, mostly in terms of substance. Looking at the 3rd film, not only was there a bunch of different locations to visit, but there was also a diverse narrative with side plots and different jokes. Here, it's just like what Dracula never says, "bleh. bleh. Bleh."

So it would likely be in his character to Dragula Dracula to the plane headed to Brasil. Plus the tracker looks like it's in Brazil. Honestly, the fact there's this much wrong with this one aspect just speaks volumes of the whole film.

I gave the 4th movie a chance but it just felt so empty in the middle. So many aspects if this film felt pointless with jokes that weren't really funny to me. I don't know what the production went through but it felt like such a wasted opportunity. The best parts of this movie were in the beginning and the ending. I think this movie needed a villian or something with a time limit element for johhny's character slowly becoming a monster. This could've been a story that was about your inner humanity and the balance with your inner monster. I loved the scene with dracula setting up his hotel to protect monsters including his daughter. There is a little bit of theming with what it means to be a monster and having human qualities and there could've been a villian that said something about that. The king of vampires and other monsters working to save the humanity of someone that they cared about with a race against the clock with real obstacles on the way would work great. Oh well. 0:53 I was 100% expecting at least one of the characters in this movie, especially Ninja's character to break out in some flossing frenzy during the whole dance party opening, or any Fortnite related dances for that matter. But no, we got Wayne doing the renegade for about 10 seconds instead. Are we going to be at the point where at least one character from virtually every franchise will break out in TikTok dances now? Like how there was a phase in Hollywood cinema where many fictional characters started doing Fortnite dances. Soon, more and more characters will start breaking out in TikTok dances, and then the whole internet will have some fit over it just cause their favorite characters did said dances.

Full disclosure I only watched the first 15 minutes because I just wasn't feeling this one. What really confused me is that at the start, it came off more that Drac didn't trust Johnny with the hotel not because he was human but because he didn't believe in his ideas or sense of responsibility. And at the start Johnny hijacks Dracula's retirement announcement night, AND Johnny's plan was a mess that would have been a disaster if Dracula hadn't gotten involved! So... kinda proves Drac's distrust of Johnny's capabilities right? It's so weird they went at this angle

I think my main problem is having Dracula having to again learn a lesson. Especially since they set it up like both Johnny and Dracula were in the wrong. Spoilers if you care below It starts out with the anniversary of Dracula and Johnny throws this crazy thing together which Dracula clearly does not like, it even almost ends in everything being destroyed and burned yet. Johnny is shown to be immediately disorganized and doesn’t plan which helps make Dracula not want to give him the hotel. So that action is justified as he’s leaving his life’s work at the hands of someone who clearly hasn’t grown up. But instead Johnny is never criticized for this just drac is wrong Again. Nah man this movie I skipped to the end.

Thank God people are finally calling out Johnny for all his evil actions like lighting Frank on fire when he clearly hated it, manipulating people with his loudly annoying Julian the Mammoth esque “charm”. pandering to kids instead of ACTUALLY maturing and just feeling like he’s so much of an annoying (youngly) masculine stereotype when everyone else in this movie (even Drac in the third act because the movie hates us as much or even more than we hate it if we don’t support Johnny) couldn’t be bothered to! Fuck this movie! Either it’s as bad as Summer Vacation or the worst one since! Hell, these movies even gave me new appreciation for the first two movies in the series I never even cared about but could’ve had they been better!

Something about the way this movie is animated feels really weird to me, and i think I know why now. It's simultaneously over-animated AND under-animated. There's no subtly, no nuance in their movements and expressions. They feel more ridiculously cartoony now, like they can never have simple, natural expressions and movements. It's all herky-jerky, spontaneous, and unnatural when compared to the other movies. Which makes it feel much less grounded and relatable. These characters didn't start off essentially being rubberband-limbed loony toons, but that's what they are now. It's like they didn't trust that kids watching had enough of an attention span to sit and watch the movie unless they constantly jangled keys in the children's faces.

The first movie was a good mix of heartfelt and cheeky. It had some good jokes, and some good emotional moments too. It’s a great premise! Dracula as the owner of a hotel for monsters to seek refuge from humans that persecute them. All this so that Dracula could, in his mind, keep his daughter safe after his wife was murdered by humans. I loved it, it’s an underrated movie. Plus, it has horror/creepy vampire themes in it, which I think the other movies neglect. In the other movies, the third and fourth especially, I feel like it’s easy to forget that the characters are supposed to be creepy ghoulish monsters. The second one? It’s good. I can appreciate it, but it’s not as good as the first one. The third and fourth movies suck. I don’t like how they basically replaced Martha with the blonde lady and striped the franchise of it’s serious side. It just feels like a bunch of forced jokes. In my opinion they should’ve just stopped at the second movie, or maybe even the first.
