Man there’s soo many facts that this guy gets completely wrong.. a few of the ones that bugged me were, the new Panama Canal expansion that was opened in 2016 is now 218 feet wide.. there was also 24 Essex class carriers, not 22, and Japan didn’t have the largest navy at the outbreak of ww2, the UK did, and by the end of the war, the U.S. had more than double the amount of ships as the next country with the largest navy at over 7,000 ships total

Dang, I thought we'd get to see Auxiliary Control up front of the ship. They never show those and they are important. People need to know that there is a second control area where these ships can be controlled and steered if the Island is destroyed in war.

@@bardenaviation Thanks, I just noticed that you had responded. I never served in the Navy, wanted to (I'm 50) but health issues prevented it. That said I have always loved the Navy and I've did quite a bit of researching of the Essex class. I believe there were 32 ordered but they cancelled 8 of them leaving 24 of them. Oriskany CV-34 was the last one to be built and was very modified versus the others. It's sad that it wasn't preserved for that reason alone, it was special. Course it really looked bad before they sunk it as a reef, they had just left it to rust. The last Essex to serve was the Lexington CV-16 and it was serving, at the time, as a trainer ship for navy aviators. She wasn't decommissioned until late of 1991, almost 1992! That was a good run!

One more thing. Of all the preserved Essex's , Yorktown really does look the worst. Sadly. I am from South Carolina and the first time I ever went on Yorktown was 1979, have been many times over the years. That said, Yorktown looks so bare. There is little to nothing on the mast or the island up there. The radars were taken off, the RADOME, antennas, etc. Interestingly Intrepid and Hornet both have all theirs (Yorktown would have had the same types, same era). Lexington is the only preserved one that would have different antennas and radars but that is because it served a lot longer and has newer technology. The Island and Mast on Yorktown should look identical to Intrepid and Hornet. Intrepid is the best looking and best preserved. Honestly the Intrepid looks like it could sail tomorrow, it looks that good. Of course they did dry dock it several years back in the mid 2000's and painted and shored up some things. New York is a rich state though so they had the money to do it right. Hornet does look good though and has it's proper tech up top. They have some docents on their staff, many who served on that ship and still know how to operate it and have a wealth of knowledge. I found a lot of those videos on KZbin about it, I'd say they have some of the best staff on that ship. Lastly, you'd think that the Patriots Point people would at least had some metal people that could have made some "dummy" radars and antennas that were in the same style that it should have on it. That would at least make the ship look whole and proper, I mean its not like they could ever use them if they had the real ones up there and were powered up. Dummy ones would be enough to make the ship look great. Sorry to write a book, haha, I just enjoy Naval history.

I toured the Yorktown and I saw THE WHOLE ship from the bridge to engine rooms and everything in between on my own. Not sure what that dude meant that a gen tix only showed 20 percent. I did the self tour and saw everything in this video. and another thing. Why spend 20 minutes talking about the Doolittle Raid? The raid occurred on a different class of carrier and a different NAMED carrier. I can understand visiting the Hornet in san Francisco and talking about the raid. That was the Hornet. And the namesake of the original Hornet. But the Yorktown? An Essex class carrier? Makes no sense and a waste of time.

Yeh it was interesting that they decided to include all that. I agree, after taking the tour and walking alone, you might be better off alone exploring...

They didn't even show auxiliary control and they were right there! They just had to go forward under the deck up front.
