I can't believe I loved Ridge Racer for ps1 as a kid. It literally had one track. One fucking track!? But damn I loved that shit. And the really long hard process of unlocking the secret black car. It'd turn up midrace sometimes and you had to beat it in the race despite it having maxed out stats for speed, acceleration, handling, all of it. I managed to do it once I think. It was like 25 years ago. But I think I managed it. Might have been with my Xploder cheat device though (like a game genie/game shark) Today racing games should have like 20 tracks minimum. Even mario kart 8 deluxe on switch is really lacking with content. It doesn't even have a story mode. It's such a lazy attempt at a game. But yeah these days, shouldn't every racing game come with 100+ tracks? We have the hard drive space now, not limited by CD or dvd or even blu Ray size capacity. Yet even today, you see premium AAA racing games with like 10 tracks and that's it, and no story mode. All of it. Shameful and lazy. Ridge Racer I can excuse because it was all about the spectacle of how pretty and 3D it was. But not racing games of today. At least Ridge Racer was corrected, with Type 4 which low and behold had more than 1 track. I know, right? But yeah despite stuff like the huge open worlds of breath of the wild and GTA 5, there's not much that's a similar amount of content but for racing games. You know? The reason the gran turismo games were so good was because of the insane amount of content. Gran turismo 2 even came on 2 discs. All I want is a gran turismo style game for the switch, with the big and involved story mode and licenses you have to get and different types of cars like F1 and stock cars and touring cars and rally cars etc. GRID autosport is somewhat like that but really by comparison is a very cheap imitation, it's lacking in actual content.

@@duffman18 I’d much rather have 20 finely tuned and fun tracks than 100+ average at best tracks in my games, it sucks that racing games take a bit of a back seat. I feel a lot of racing games nowadays are more reliant on tight gameplay and refined courses rather than loads of content with an alright driving model, games like Mario Kart are so popular due to mass appeal with the refined gameplay which is vastly replay-able due to how varied each race can be. I want Ridge Racer back so much though, I still regularly play Ridge Racer 1, 2 and R4 on my PSP.

@@mookid2223 i know exactly what u mean mookid, i played the hell out of Ridge Racer 4, i remember the yellow casing it came in, it was a two disc game back in 98, or 99,.........sure miss ridge racer, especially RR4, when i saw Hot Shot, it just brought back fond memories of Ridge4, now i'm playing the crap out of Hot Shot, taking some time off from playing destiny2, but what a great and fun game to get away from all the looters and shooters game types every once awhile, really enjoying HSR🏎🏎🏎👍

Outrun2006 is a free download on abandonware, practically the same game, works well with a wheel and pedals, you’ll need a PC though edit: it also has outrun 2 within the game!

Honestly, I think that if they want to reboot Golden Axe, they should do it in a God of War style. But Sega will never spend the money for this. Gameplay wise, Golden Axe was cool at the time, but unlike Streets of Rage, I don't think it would translate as well.

I even went as far as to use gear from the late '80s and early '90s for authentic sounds that would have been used on video game OST's back then. It's for sure a hybrid OST. Unfortunately since Outrun 2 and 2006 used actual Ferraris, they would have to keep paying Ferrari to use their cars in the game. That's also why you don't see Sega Rally Revo around either which is a rotten shame! These games are some of the best racing games ever made and they definitely deserve re-releases but Sega would probably lose money to make them legal to sell again.

@@OldsXCool Sadly, Sega seems to believe the Ferrari license is integral to the OutRun experience. It does add something - the red F40 is genuinely iconic as the classic OutRun car - but I'm sure most people would happily accept driving a lookalike "Farrago F1-11" if that's what it took to get OutRun 2 / C2C back on sale for current systems.

Don't sleep on *Inertial Drift*. It's a twin-stick racer [yes, twin-stick]. Loads of fun if you can ignore bad character design, storytelling and some average looped menu tunes. The racing gameplay, music, and visuals are solid! Has a 90s vibe!

The game looks great, and I'll probably buy it soon. I already loved Virtua Racing on Switch, and Horizon Chase Turbo. And here's hoping that "90s arcade racer", a.k.a. "90s Super GP" eventually gets released. Additionally, so many great Sega racing games are still left stranded in the arcade, whether it be out of their ill will, licensing issues or any other reason, to the point where it's borderline criminal.

In the first Ridge Racer on PS1 drifting put the car on rails meaning that you could initiate a drift by turning the wrong way and over take your friends while confusing them with a counter rotational 360. Skillz.

I call gaming hipsters those people that didn't lived the 2D era and think that "sharp pixels" (i.e. a horribly pixellated picture) is the way to go, while actual developers of the time did anything they could to try to mask the blockiness of the limited visuals of the time. I play 2D games mostly on CRTs, but when I have to play on a flat panel I always choose the "blur" filter (better if with scanlines), conceptually it's no different from a modern anti-aliasing filter.

I JUST picked this game up. and boy let me tell you it's a diamond in the rough! Having grown UP in the Ridge Racer arcade era, this game hits all the right spots perfectly. I applaud the game director for this title. It's like he/she either grew up in this arcade racing era or did A LOT OF RESEARCH bc right from the start this game felt like a proper 90's cab racer.

Even with all the nostalgia triggered, this game isn't that good unfortunately. It plays more like Mario Kart than any of the Sega Games it tries to recreate visually. Especially the horrible rubberbanding completely destroys any Sega feeling and pushes it more in the EA territory of Burnout and NFS. Sega racers were about racing the track, this is about dodging and bumping opponents that you can't get rid of, since the rubber band keeps them at your ass all the time. I also had some noticeable stuttering in single player on my PC running a 1080ti, although the FPS counter stays at 60fps all the time.

That mix you are describing is actually just what I want from a game like this. Sumo also made the Sonic and Sega Racing Games which I had a blast with, so if they are at all similar, I'd have a great time. If someone wants a full "simulation style" racer there are plenty of options-- but that wouldn't really fit with the aesthetic of this game.

It's great to see the games industry come full circle and return to this style of game. We need so much more of this type of game. Sometimes, you just want to play a game, not sacrifice half your days for weeks immersing yourself into another universe. This brings us back to an era where gaming had this certain "one more turn" magic, that just sucked quarters, or dollars out of our pockets. We slowly turned away from this style of play, focusing on more complex, and more involved games, but it left a huge hole in where these games needed to be. The past decade has shown us that while AAA games can be awesome, and also help puch hardware forward, sometimes we just need a simple, fun diversion for an hour or two.

Track Mania Turbo has excellent arcade physics, I wish it had more traditional races rather than just (very high quality) trials. Same goes for Absolute Drift.

A common complaint I've heard is that the AI is incredibly aggressive and the rubberbanding is very apparent, which is true to an extent. For me, I enjoy that I "run the pack" more often than not, as racing games get kind of boring if you never see another car once you get into first. Slipstreaming is also a major mechanic in this game (it's as important as drifting in my experience) and the cars in the back will actually have a bit of a speed boost just being near each other, so the leader has a bit of a disadvantage. They don't go as fast as someone in the pack, and they can only gain boost through drifts. So, in my experience, it pays to stick with the pack and boost your way to victory on the last few corners than it does to keep 1st through the whole race. It's just a different style of racing that rewards being consistent and mastering the arcade mechanics (drifting, slipstreaming, boosting). All in all, it's a great throwback and I enjoy the Saturn-esque look. There are some online play issues that need to be addressed (games with full lobbies often don't start for some reason) and longer tracks need to be a thing, but for a Game Pass title it has been very enjoyable.

The AI is aggressive, but the rubber banding is mostly when the AI decides to use the boost or takes advantage of your draft. (As you seemed to notice, it is Very easy to draft in this. They play it loose, it seems). As usual, for these kind of racers, I usually save a turbo or two for the last stretch of a last lap. In some ways, this does emulate the way AI racers behaved back in the games that influenced this, but still seem a bit more fair than before.

I can't help it, I love the non textured polygonal style. This one seems to have also 4 players split screen on PC, which is awesome. I'm just not entirely convinced of that sliding mechanics. I'm playing with manual gears, and I'm doing anything I can to not make the car go in "slide mode", it's so detached and forced.

This looks good, however I'd like to know why every modern racing game seems to hitch/dip/underrun in FPS when turning. Maybe dynamically loading newly-exposed assets due to the change in perspective, some sort of additional physics only applied when turning, or a large difference in matrix transformations and stack pushes/pops under certain conditions? Even the Gran Turismo games do this, and it's annoying as a gamer and a programmer. Surely there's a better / more efficient / smoother way.

Think about how Michael Abrash and John Carmack were blown away in VR by a simple room with facebook screenshots plastered on the walls as textures. You can make something beautiful as a small team much easier if you scale things back.

This looks awesome! However, I do think the track design should have incorporated significantly more banks and slopes, whose presence gave Daytona USA a unique feel that wasn't fully replicated in the sequel. Scud Race also employed steeply banked turns extensively along with inclines/declines (e.g., the mountain track and the beginner day track). From the video footage of this title, the courses seem rather flat.

That was my major gripe as well - all of the tracks are just so damned flat. There's hardly any incline or camber to them, not even on tracks in the so-called "Mountain" zone where you might reasonably expect to see a bit of gradient! I'm surprised I haven't seen it mentioned more.

Nice enough game but my main gripe (apart from the AI) is: why the heck are all the tracks so damn FLAT? There are none of the awesome hills and valleys that you got in games like OutRun 2 or Rage Racer, only ever the slightest of inclines, as you can see in the video. Honestly, you'd think a track that's in the "Mountain" zone with a name like "Ski Paradise" might have a bit of incline to be seen but nope, flat as a Mode 7 SNES game.

Picked it up a few days ago on launch for Steam. Wish the levels were more "active" (regardless of generational setting) and the music could be better, but it's a fun game. Need more Indie/small games from this era and the PS1 era!

Have to admit. I love these kind of games. When I saw Sumo was behind it, and their advertisement, I knew I had to get it. Blistering 60fps arcade racing just can't be beat. The clean lines are also a thing where even if the frame rate keeps up, it can still be a bit jarring to go to a modern racer just after playing this one, due to that distracting busyness. Especially on ones where the 60fps isn't locked.
