I'm really glad the palette works for you, and you look beautiful. Hourglass leadership has had no problem speaking publicly about commitments to "cruelty free" and reformulation for a 100% vegan line. Personally, I won't be buying from them again until they make humans at least as important as animals.

Unless Hourglass publicly addresses this debacle, I'm going to assume that they released volume 3 to appease the Caucasian influencers who spoke out in solidarity with women of color. Since up to this point most of the money they made from their powder products and holiday releases most likely came from people of lighter complexions, it didn't effect their money when women of deeper complexions weren't buying, but it effected their money when the allies said they wouldn't continue to buy from the brand.

I just want to start out by saying thank you so much for discussing the Hourglass issue in detail and exactly why it was an issue. There's been a certain cohort of influencers that basically said "well they're finally being inclusive and I'm taking one for the team and ordering it for you", without understanding that there's good reasons why some of us don't want to order from them. It's been off putting to say the least. I'm interested to see if they continue to improve in the future here.

I am one who would be able to use their products no problem. HOW…ever I made the commitment to myself to not support brands who don’t support people like me. This palette as you similarly stated is like a pacifier (take this and stop fussing Chile). So my hard earned dollars will continue to be spent elsewhere because I and people like me are certainly no ones after thought. I feel like our coins were missed and here comes this palette. Anywho your look is very pretty and I am glad it worked out for those who choose to buy.

Hourglass like many other companies is the reason I say WE ALL have to STOP making companies include everyone! Support those that have you in mind and those that don’t let’s stop forcing them to take our money when we can create our own and support our own & those who support inclusivity. When brands don’t cater to everyone on their 1st launch my money goes elsewhere and when that brand “expands” my money still goes elsewhere. For Hourglass to finally come out with a deeper powder I would say kudos only bc this brand has included all shade ranges in other products. I bought the trio palette. I'm really happy with it. My main concern is that I believe Volume 3 is them fixing the debacle with their advertising for Volume 2, rather than proof of their commitment to being more inclusive. I am happy they created a second holiday palette this year, but we've been asking for one for deeper skin tones. The darkest blush in Universe Unlocked will work, but the rest are iffy for someone darker than tan-caramel. It would have been great to see the shades in Volume 3 be used as the finishing powder, bronzer, and highlighter in a third holiday palette. On the other hand, I'm glad for these powders to be in their permanent line as Volume 3. So, I'm conflicted. They took one step forward, but without Hourglass making a statement or addressing it, I won't know if that step forward is going to continue (us getting a dark/deep holiday palette next year and an expansion of the bronzer range) or if that step forward was actually the end of the line for Hourglass and they feel they've done enough and don't need to expand any further.

Had to return after getting to watch this episode and say you did a really enjoyable, nice, candid yet professional job. This is our Victoria 🔥 Many brands, especially luxury, have had a shade challenge. But it’s the seemingly deceptive marketing approach that did more damage to HG. It’s so unfortunate that a quality brand like Hourglass has this blemish, but many have recovered from worse. I'm a pale (obviously white) makeup lover and I find that some products just aren't for me. When brands make limited ranges, especially foundations, most things will not work for me. HOWEVER, the way darker skin is treated by makeup companies is beyond atrocious. For every concealer that's too dark for me, there's twenty that's too light for anyone with any measure of deepness to their skin. Until these brands step up their game and stop being lazy I'm not spending my money

I understand the dissent in the community and it is warranted. I have two products from hourglass their large primer and concealer. I always wanted their powder and I could never purchase because of the shade range. I was deeply disappointed in their last release of Vol. II and I spoke out also. I do like that they listened and yes I will be purchasing because powder, concealer and brushes are my favourite makeup categories

I never understood why they created liquid face products for deep skin tones yet their face palettes were lacking to say the least. I wish they would come out and address the elephant in the room. It was a pot of ASH on me and mind you, I’m a NARS Cadiz shade. Their translucent loose setting powder is amazing but these other powder products are simply not for us. And ma’am, that lip color is everything! Keep on!

I agree about still being curious. I went to sephora earlier this year and swatched the bronzers. They all were ashy, my skin tone or a extremely dull grey brown. It turned me off. I seen the “deeper” face palette and was intrigued because it was a face palette that I could finally use. Ended up ordering it yesterday from ulta! Got it for 20% off also

I have definitely canceled this brand. It took them too long to do something about the powders range. 2 years ago I decided to not buy anymore from them because I value more my friends with a deep skin tone than a shady brand. And what they did last year with volume II was like a slap in the face. They can try to redeem themselves but it's coming too late for me. I don't plan on purchasing this product. I really enjoyed the first Ambient Lighting palette a long time ago when it was first released. I used it as a highlighter, eye shadow...I used it for everything. I am a medium deep skin toned Black woman. I started to notice that Hourglass was not making nor marketing their products for people like me. I bought the second palette and I am enjoying it. I have never bought their holiday palettes and I probably never will. I regret not purchasing their metallic Ambient Lighting palette. It was a holiday release and then they rereleased it for a short time. I hoped they would make it permanent. Oh well. Pat McGrath Labs has Skin Fetish: Sublime Skin Highlighting Trio and I believe that is a superior product.

Thank you for this video. The emotional labor was evident. I agree that HG should come out with some sort of public statement acknowledging the long delayed addition of powders that cater to deeper complexions. At the same time, I’m wondering if it would come across as hollow and performative since people have waited so long. The silence from this brand is troubling. They need to hire (and support) people who are actually in touch with the needs of their customers, especially the most marginalized ones. It would be a step in the right direction if they personally reached out to content creators like yourself for consultation services. This should obviously come with some sort of renumeration.

Excellent review. A couple of years ago I went on a purchase spree with the Hourglass blushes, but even those can be hit and miss on my medium skin because of the unique way they are pressed with different colors swirling together. It may show up on my skin but its not really being inclusive because if you end up with mostly beige with a few specks of pink it looks really off! This new light edit is a step in the right direction but they need to be doing way more than just one palette. Like you said, they should address that they will be more thoughtful and inclusive from now on.

Honestly, I boycotted hourglass when I first started cuz the face palettes were obviously only for not just light but very light people. And I was just confused even when they came out with singles that everything was light. I’m only tan and it looked super chalky on me. You nailed it. Subscribed. I plan on buying Vol III because I just have to see if the powders live up to the hype for myself but it does not represent a change in my feelings towards the brand. They really need to explain why this too so long. And I hope they release the new powders as singles. I’m right on the border between Vol II and Vol III and definitely not buying both.

Glad to see you back and thriving! I bought the universe unlocked pallette for myself and my sister. She is having her first baby and I wanted to do something nice for her. I am a true chocolate brown with golden/ warm undertones so I'm hoping it will work with the right application. My sister is a shade or two deeper than me and slightly cooler in undertone. I'm worried it won't work for her. I sent it as a gift via Ulta, so if doesn't work, at least she can get store credit. Thank you for this review. I always wanted powder products from Hourglass, but as we all know, their products have lacked depth and range forever. I truly hope they have turned a corner.

I do think the shades are built Le enough for the powders to work for both of you. Good call getting the palette from Ulta though.
