Consider this: This video utilizes Demetrios Atreides as the founder of the House. Demestrios is only mentioned in the Dune Encyclopedia, which technically hasn't been canon in decades. Brian Herbert's books are supposed to be THE canon, but are roundly rejected as such by the fanbase. Even @Invicta's Dune Lore does the same thing.

I'd see Atreides also having extensive water combat training. So carriers, combat subs, various surface ships, their equivalent of SEALs, etc, all sorts of skills needed to fight on a plant with a similar water percentage as Earth. Then those troops were moved to Arrakis, meaning they needed to develop all-new skills, and those that could not be brought over had to remain behind.

I never understood the logic of the Emperor's plan in Dune. If the Houses assume the Emperor had nothing to do with the attack on Arrakis, then the Houses would think the Emperor was too weak to enforce his decisions (Who should have Arrakis). On the other hand, if they found out that he was behind it all, they would assume he could not be trusted, and subsequently lose all respect and allegiance to him. Either way, the Emperor's position appears to be weakened by the plan. Is there something from the novel that adds more to his plan that makes it make more sense?

Houses Harkonnen and Atreides are en feud. The have an aristocratic right to wage war on each other provided certain forms are met. Baron Harkonnen even brags about having manuevered Duke Leto into satisfying these conditions so that the Baron could justify invading Arrakis.

Shaddam is unfortunately in a very precarious position at the moment, he's trying to eliminate the obvious claim holders to his throne, by destroying Duke Leto he removes the most obvious threat to his position and by forcing the Harkonnens to expend such a huge amount of resources in order to accomplish that victory he's also left them in a dangerous position where they will be too focused on paying off their debt to the Guild to provide a challenge. In essence he's trying to buy time to address the lack of an heir to the throne

Definitely need to read the book. There is also the fact that the sardakar are dressed in Harkonen uniforms, which obviously one can’t do for the movie, but provides a little bit of plausible deniability to the emperor. The emperor also had to spend massive amounts of money on bribes to get the other houses to not worry. Obviously the nature of the film being part one they leave out all the post House Atreides politics in which there is a pissing match between Harkonen and the emperor about who the other houses would side with if the plot came out publicly.

The other factions would move against him very quickly. The Sardukar can’t do anything if the navigators won’t ferry them, and the Navigators would never stand for the Emperor taking spice for himself.

The emperor is far more powerful than any one great house, perhaps even several. But there are many great houses, and thousands of lesser ones. Against their combined might the emperor stands no chance. So, the emperor rules from the capital world and is forced to give the various houses fief worlds to govern in his name because he is not strong enough to force his will upon all of humanity. This is also why he could only secretly turn a few battalions of Sardaukar over to the Harkonens, had the rest of the noble families learned of this act they would have banded together to overthrow him in order to avoid the same fate. If the emperor attempted to personally take over Arakis, it would have been seen as a threat just like the above.

To simplify, every major power in Dune basically thinly disguises their hate for each other. The Imperial family, the Landsraad, the Spacing Guild, the Bene Gesserit, etc. The Imperium is a very delicate power structure where they all keep each other in check and prevent Leto II style tyrants from winning. Arrakis being the only source of spice, the super-duper important resource the whole human universe is addicted to, the everyone would be mistrustful of the Imperial family not trying to use their royal position and control of Arrakis to ransom the spice supply to everyone, just like Leto II eventually did. Better have a subordinate governor from the Landsraad serve as a trusted compromise between the Imperial family and the Landsraad, where the Landsraad can much more easily trust one of their own, and, as seen with the Atreides, can be as easily removed since they arent the Imperial family.

I don't know if it is entirely accurate to claim that House Atreides made it a tradition to employ mentats to replace thinking machines. I thought thinking machines were severely outlawed in the Imperium and any governence of planetary or stellar scale needs computation. Mentats would be pretty much necessary to function for any big house. There may be a difference in how House Atreides treated their mentats but at that point that'd be redundant seeing how much of a point how fairly they treat their people has been made. Perhaps their use as personal mentors and not mere servants should have been more emphasized?

I've only just discovered the universe of Dune via the brilliant film/movie and finally starting the books! I should of delved into this before that's all I'm gonna say! This will probably be blocked on KZbin by Warner Brothers Copyright Agents when Dune Part 2 comes out if not sooner, because the KZbin copyright algorithm is designed to be abused by copyright trolls and companies like WB, Disney, Fox, and Toei, who believe any video with spoilers could endanger their respective franchises. One of the problems with being "old" (I'm 69) is enduring the repetitive BORING fascination with relatively recent fiction and the occasional fumbling attempts to "reboot" some of the older stuff like Heinlein's Starship Troopers or Asimov's Foundation. Science Fiction has a vast history of cultures, polities and technologies to investigate, from Smith's Bergenholm inertialess FTL drive to Laumer's Worlds Of The Imperium. It'd be nice if the Institute were to dust off some of them and examine how they influenced (and in some cases were directly ripped off by) later SF.

i still got the DUNE game from back in the late 1980s or early 90s.....its was awesome! It was one of the first computer video games out there....The new DUNE game just came out yesterday on STEAM....gonna grab it fo sho.

It's a very interesting choice. The name Paul means "Small". Paul chose to be called Muad'Dib, a little Desert Mouse, and the name means "Teacher of Boys". Then that small, teacher of boys stole everyone's cheese. (The Spice) Never ignore little names. They can be quite powerful! lol
