Dune has NO "good guys." The entire story is to warn you not to blindly follow charismatic leaders. Paul is a monster who uses a people's deepest beliefs to get what he wants. (and ends up killing millions in the aftermath) The only potential good people in the Dune universe are the normal people being crushed by the caste system.

Problems with lists like this about franchises spanning many time periods and thousands of years is that things can change a lot over time. House Fenring is another weird one. It never actually achieved rule over entire planets like most Great Houses, but rather it achieved Great House status by being a satellite house of Corrino and being raised up by proximity to the throne.

@@giglomesh123 There is a book written from Herbert's notes, published by his son. In that book, (and well described in the Book "Dune) the Fremen were descended from Zensunni wanderers. The "prequel" book, if you can call it that, details how a faster than light ship that was created before the Spice induced prescient ability, was stolen by a Zensunni and loaded with a group of fellow Zensunni who then randomly jumped at FTL and ended up stranded on arrakis after the ship landed in the desert. The Zensunni then spent the next 10 thousand years adapting to the harsh life on Arrakis, aided by the later arrival of a Bene Gesserit from the Missionaria Protectiva, a sort of CIA branch of the Bene Gesserit that sowed legends on planets that would convince the locals to help a Bene Gesserit if one ever arrived there and needed help. holy crap that was a lot.

The fremen are actually the best warriors in the known universe. Sardaukar are brutal because of their brutal environment, and well, arrakis and the planets the fremen and their ancestors (zensunni wanderers) wandered through were harsher than the planet of salusa secundus, the og homeworld of house corrino and the current homeworld of the sardaukar. I don't think it was explained well but the fremen are supposed to be that much stronger than the sardaukar that even an average fremen fedaykin can take on multiple sardaukar. This is why the bene gesserit wanted to control them from the beginning and so they started the plan of a kwisatz haderach and the fremen prophet of the lisan al gaib to basically be able to use them. Only paul didn't really follow them and instead did his own thing

His wife gets the bene geserite prosecuted. Yea they were the good guys until Paul lived long enough to see himself become the villian. He foresaw most of this. Sister revealed the rest and his son fulfilled his father's goal of intergalactic rule by House atreides. You start to understand why the Bene Geserite were afraid of Paul and almost agree with them tryin to kill him. My issue his grandmother (reverend mother of house Corrino) and grandfather (Baron Vladimir of house Harkkanon) tried to kill him knowing he was their grandchild

Keeping it to strictly movie. There's this substance called spice melange that is on a distant desert planet and everyone wants control over it. The planet is hostile and has giant worms on it. There's 4 main parties that are in conflict over it. One's currently in power of the galatic empire (corrino), one's native to the planet (freman), one's been given the control over the planet by corrino (Ateriades) and one's at war with ateriades (Harkonen). Corrino sides with harkonen and destroyes ateriades and gain control over the planet. The son and lover of the king of Ateriades survives and join freman to survive in the desert. That's essentially where movie 1 ends. Freman are religious people and see signs of a savior in the son according to a prophecy. The son doesn't believe in said prophecy because it was written by his mother's faction several generations ago. The harkonen and freman conflict intensifies over time until harkonen bombard one of the major base of freman and kill everyone there. This prompts the son to fulfill the prophecy despite his fear of the what's to come. He drinks poison extracted from a giant worm. Gains the ability to see his future and seeks revenge on harkonen and corrino. He becomes the leader of the freman using his found religious status and plans to bring the harkonen and corrino together at one place and unleash a massive attack to annihilate both at once to gain power over the galatic empire. His plan succeeds and that's where the second movie ends. I left a lot out and oversimplified it but that's the gist.
