varimarc1 in Britain our building regulations are a lot different compared to North America, our houses are usually built to stand for a very long time, which is why in London and other areas of the uk, you can find houses that date before the 1600s. In norther America, houses are built to last no where near as long, as they eventually are demolished and replaced with better houses to suit what’s a popular building style of the time. In Britain, a vast amount of our new houses are built in the style of our heritage houses.
@scenicdepictionsofchicagolife

@@aidan7936 actually it really depends where in North America you are from. I am born and raised in Chicago and still live there. Double thickness structural brick homes are freaking ubiquitous here. It often gives off a overly monochromatic darker look, though while this trend continues they are starting to replace older brick and graystone buildings with more complex and more color gradient brick designs. If you look up "chicago two flat" or "chicago bungalow" you'll see exactly what I'm talking about. What is unfortunate is that in some cases the brick is being displaced by woodframe homes, but a beacon of hope comes from the Chicago build code enforcement taking a very poopoo stance on woodframe as our fire code here is very much more stringent than in other parts of the world after having had the Chicago fire. They wont even allow the use of structural CLT or mass timber yet because of this. I am all in support of making brick building standard but I will say that we should allow in more sustainable materials like CLT. Woodframing is very inefficient too with all the scrap it creates.

Aidan Ral It’s a shame that due to increase in demand for housing, overall quality of homes has become shoddy. The house designs in complexes like these are very simple and in my frank opinion;lack individuality.Though that’s just my personal preferences.

@@scenicdepictionsofchicagolife That's not because of the regulations, that's because Chicago had a great deal of Italian and British migratiion in the mid 1900's. California's building and zoning regulations are much tougher than Chicago's and they still build largely on wood.

+elemento1991 The reason that they would be made fun of is that there is no real design in these houses the architecture is bland and all of the houses are the same color of brick which makes for a boring neiborhood and makes them look uglier than they really are also they need shutters and they could use wood and stone and different shades of brick through the nieborhood so they just all look the same

I think these homes are amazing. Wish we could build like this in the states. Now I completely understand why the window sills are so wide. Cinder blocks surrounded by brick. Strong and long lasting. Beautiful Windows too. Keeps the heat in way better than ours does. I think the main difference in uk v American homes is we have an abundance of trees where the uk manufactures more brick. Idk, just a guess, but they certainly put our homes to shame!

What!!!! They are demolishing old battery poultry houses full of asbestos. There is no misting system. The 360 digger driver has his door open, and there are men walking around in the building as he is pulling it down, not only are none of the guys wearing any suit or breathing masks, there is a high risk that the trusses or the cieling which is fixed on top of the truss could come falling down on top of them.

Built a gated community eh? And yes, it's stronger in some sense. But the reason as to why we have wooden structures at least here where I am, is due to seismic activity and such. I lived in Earthquake alley in California and brick and cinder-block and cobble stone, anything that was masonry or even stonework and concrete would fail except if it was something made for the government. And only a select few of the enterprising private sector could have stuff that strong to stand up to the seismic activities and such. But the commoners would have their nice brick and cinder-block homes get destroyed unless they opted for an old Adobe style home or just make it look like stone with stuck'o finishing.

More and more developments are being required to have rain capture. Lessens the burdens on the sewage system, and reduces chances of flash flooding. Difficulty is, the good stuff can be really expensive - I live in a 250 year flood zone, and I priced up a 6m x 9m pad, and the drain pavers came out at near 6k alone (ignoring substrates, labour etc).

You may want a workshop in which to make a lot of noise, attaching it to the house would allow that noise to travel better. As a garage, also offers better fire protection should a car catch fire. And, there would be additional complexities with the roof, so best as stand alone.

Watched a time lapse of a wood-framed house being built, and the comments were full of people bitching about “American houses.” So I came to this video to see the difference, and the comments..... are still full of people bitching about wooden “American houses.” 😆😆

One thing is for sure, Britain has got the worst houses in Europe. Even new ones like these. No sellers, garages so tiny, that you can't even park your car inside. Very little insulation, constant mold problems, single glazed windows, huge utility bills for heating, gardens that look like you are in a prison. And of course, massively overpriced.

Seems like a lot of moisture soaking on the side of the house on the left... maybe mold issues down the road and rotten wood problems. Not impressed.

Actually the outside walls are the draining of the salts and grime from the moisture ( when the bricks were made). It goes after few years but can be removed by jet pressure. It doesn't help constructing the houses before winter as this causes delay in drying and also shrinkage.

In the UK houses tend to have two skins, outer brick, cavity insulation of 6inch depth or so, and then an internal concrete block (older houses had two layers of brick work with an empty cavity, older again had two layers of brick with no cavity, older again had rock or wattle and daub or timber with some filler). Provided the wall ties were oriented correctly (people still get this wrong), there would be little change of rain on the outermost layer making it to the inner most layer.

Visually nice houses like those have the down side of hearing everything next door with the wood running through one house to the other. This piece of wood would carry the sound (vibration). Also, nothing would be settled, and damage would start. Much older houses are settled and therefore are more desirable to educated people of the construction or architecture profession. I can't think of the name of the "white stuff" on the bricks but that is an uncontrolled natural occurring substance on new bricks. And another thing, that was not a fast build process. 2 weeks, and an experienced builder could do that.

It's a real crime that these expensive houses still have suspended timber flooring on the first floor. Really cheap for the building company but not good for the eventual owner. For this kind of money I would have expected proper concrete floors throughout the entire house with underfloor heating as well. Whilst they look nice, I would call them a overpriced and poor quality in relation to the price. A real shame.

Id prefer a timber floor - provided it was joist and floor board (not particle board on joist). Flexibility under foot is good.

@@mechminded2207 that’s the way they do it in most homes in the UK nowadays. Wood structure for the roof, upper floors and interior walls. Cheaper than using concrete and it’s just as strong.
