A couple tries to lock away a secret.
HOUSE OF STRAW is used with permission from Kyle Bogart. Learn more at vimeo.com/user....
Evening is on the horizon, and Emma has a lot to do before sunset hits. But a fight with her husband Reed threatens to derail her evening plans. Soon the disagreement escalates into something much more serious between Emma and her husband, leaving little time to lock Reed away before their little secrets get out.
Writer-director Kyle Bogart's short falls neatly into the horror category, with the supernatural secret between husband and wife forming a crucial fulcrum in the plot, as well as the secret that binds them together.
But at its heart, it is an incisive, penetrating and painfully realistic portrait of a fraying marriage reaching a crisis point. Shot with a sense of muted realism with an eye for the mordant and macabre detail, the story is really a domestic drama that uses its horror elements to heighten and foreground conflict and emotion to great effect.
The actual horror is handled with great economy and precision, using strategies of suggestion and innuendo instead of explicit violence or gore, though the visuals have an uneasiness in their preoccupation with the everyday surreal.
But the real conflict and violence at the film's heart are emotional, as the story focuses on how partners in a marriage can chafe against one another, and how this pressure can cause them to act out in ways both overt and passive-aggressive. Excellent writing and performances show a certain psychological acuity that often isn't found in this genre, as the storytelling puts the focus both on Emma's stifling frustrations and the wearying yet constant pull of marital obligations.
Lead actors Liz Beckham and Jason Newman play the long-married couple with a believable sense of long-running history, one that runs the gamut from indifference, comfort, tenderness and irritation. The internal and external conflicts emerge from this complicated relationship and the gravity it exerts on both husband and wife, mining emotionally complex and decidedly mature territory.
By the time HOUSE OF STRAW escalates the tension and suspense into a memorable climax, it has laid out its narrative elements with great care and precision, and watching the puzzle pieces lock into place is both highly satisfying and genuinely thrilling in the way that only a genre film can deliver.
But HOUSE OF STRAW resonates well after its ending due to the unexpected depths it excavates within its characters. Through well-delineated characters and unexpectedly emotional intimacy we achieve with them as viewers, it offers a powerful snapshot of the complexities of marriage, partnership, duty and a fraught yet powerful love that binds people to one another -- and puts a new spin on the phrase "for better or worse."

I’m not sure she didn’t know he killed the boyfriend. Well done making a genuinely scary werewolf on a low budget that doesn't just look like a hairy man in a mask. I mean, it's probably just a taxidermied dog. But some clever lighting and a little bit of of practical effects makes that scariest werewolf I've seen since Dog Soldiers.

This is a classic horror story made more sad than frightening with this superb, modern-day re-telling. However, it's also not without its comic irony: The unwitting butcher, who sells the husband bags of pig meat, becomes the midnight meal himself. What's more, there's an erotic resonance here - the wife screams and claws in orgasm, while the husband growls and writhes in monstrosity - that somehow reminds me of Picasso's "Minotaur Kneeling over Sleeping Girl." So the two are a perfect match, oddly enough, despite their troubled marriage.

A little confusing to me. She holds the gun to him, he lunges, she screams, then we hear the gun go off. Next thing, she gets into her car and drives away. Then the boyfriend pulls up to the house. Then we hear the husband calling her. Next thing is they're washing out the tub and she finds her ring among the blood. How did we go from her driving away and boyfriend entering the house, to her and the husband washing out the blood?

She shot the wolf but did not kill him... Then she runs away. A bit after that the butcher comes back to give her ring (she message him before asking for it), we then hear a growl from the wolf. What we don't see (and that presumably happened) is that the wolf back to his senses gets the butcher, takes him to the bathtub, and eats him. While cleaning the bathtub the next morning, the wife finds the only thing left... The ring. She then figures out what must have happened. The blood in her hands is the butcher's.

Listen! , If for some reason you don’t feel the same as the first weeks, you are simply extinguishing the flame, the full brightness you saw was the result of two persons connecting at the highest level (when it’s true) the minute your mind goes elsewhere it’s almost over. Don’t stretch it just end it...

It's messed up that she still loves him somewhat, but still cheats on him. She hesitates and isn't willing to hurt him physically or emotionally, but still does it. Honesty would be better, but I get it, I've been in a relationship with someone who can't help themselves.

Pretty well done piece. The Wolf wasn't too bad considering it didn't have a Hollywood budget. It's hard enough for CGI to overcome the uncanny valley, so it's no surprise that the practical effects couldn't get the eyes to look lifelike but in the dark it worked well enough. The twist of her lover becoming organic wolf chow was a good one.

Reminds me of the old story of the man who becomes a werewolf once a year. So his wife shuts him out and only lets him in when he gives her a certain knock proving he is no longer a beast. However on one such occasion his wife is drowsy and with child, and thinks she hears the knock. Well... you can guess the rest.

Despite her feelings for him or the other guy, I think she feels responsible for him. She is stuck with him, cause she does not trust him to be able to care for himself. And he supports her view on that so she wouldn't leave him. It is a classic helping Syndrom and abuse relationship. You can see this co dependency also in couples with alcohol abuse or other abusive deseases. Where one partner thinks the other won't get along without their help and pity them. The abusive one is comfortable with this situation cause he/she can push his/her responsibility for him/herself away on to the other and Need not to stop the abuse. Sadly I know what I am talking about...

@bpiilani as someone who is stuck in a Co dependency relationship you think you cannot leave. It does not necessarily mean that you cheat. I left such a toxic relationship in my past only because the other person cheated... which was my lucky escape. After that I started to work on my self confidence to minimize the risk to get into such a toxic relation again.
