Three scouts get an opportunity.
THE ORDER is used with permission from Chad Cunningham. Learn more at chadcunningham....
Young scouts Jackson, Dustin and Miles are on a camping trip as part of a prestigious opportunity for their troop. It's their initiation into the next, higher level of the organization.
Subjected to trials of speed, strength and endurance, they struggle to prove themselves and find themselves pitted against one another in order to win. But one of them begins to realize that all is not what it seems with their scouting organization -- and discovering the truth unearths a darker side to both the "order" and the boys than anyone imagined.
Like many other excellent thrillers, writer-director Chad Cunningham's suspenseful, action-packed short leans on impeccable craftsmanship to draw viewers into its meticulously drawn world and story. What stands out initially in this short film is its incredible camerawork, sound design and score, which all work together to create an atmosphere of suspense and tension that keeps the audience's curiosity alive.
Smart, compelling visuals and fine performances by its mostly young cast parse out information about the world and characters like breadcrumbs that we -- and the lead young scout, Jackson -- follow avidly. The desire to poke beneath an initially innocuous or placid surface is irresistible to both the scouts and to the audience, and we uncover the secrets about the order just as Jackson does.
The story itself is a riff on classic themes explored in stories like LORD OF THE FLIES -- the conflict between decency and civilization versus the savagery evoked by rivalry and competition for seemingly scarce resources and rewards. This is rich classical narrative territory, but the film approaches it with energy and self-assured verve.
The hidden world and secrets are dark, as is its final statement on human nature. But as a film, it's also just a lot of fun, and a sheer pleasure, to watch, using the art of superlative filmmaking to immerse an audience into its story and characters. Its confidence and craft beg for a feature-length treatment to fill out the characters and background, but at its current scale, THE ORDER offers thrills and chills worthy of a multiplex.

The "no talking" rule made no sense especially since there were no consequences for breaking it. I also dont understand the 180° shift in character when the dude watches that 30 second video at the end. So now he's ok with his friend dying and being subjected to starvation??? Pretty inconsistent.

@JediFlavored Soap The times he was a good kid though were usually alone when they wouldn't have been able to take note. That and most of his reactions seemed at least relatively like, well, reactions. Just seems too circumstantial to me and his kindness never really led to anything.

@JediFlavored Soap Nice ideas. It's that smile itself that I have trouble reconciling with the rest of his character given EVERYTHING else we've been shown about his character. That smile came from left field; absolutely incongruent with his ostensible character. Had they planted a seed earlier in the movie there would've been much more of a payoff. Like had the counselors said at the outset: "This Ordeal has been known to bring out sociopaths in hiding." Or something to that effect, then we would've suspected that the Dick kid was the Sociopath/ Psychopath but then the smile at the end would have let us know that our "protagonist" was the Socio/Psychopath all along. That, to me, would have been more satisfying. It's the film's job to lay out ALL the clues so that a twist ending makes sense. If they don't that's just bad storytelling.

@@lordsxman The boys were from all walks of life, they apparently had little in common, but they secretly did- they were all putting on a show. The "Order" needs ruthless people who will do anything, can't do that with a conscience. Each of the boys at the camp was a sociopath, all trying not only to make their way through the trials, but also trying to APPEAR like they were normal, caring humans. The winner proved not only that he was capable, but that he had killed two people and made it look like accidents. He was the monster all along. Every single time he was being "nice" was for show, and he was far better at hiding it than the other boys.
@edwardtbaum2169
@edwardtbaum2169 5 жыл бұрын
@@lordsxman Take note of the scene where he breaks the lock to enter the room where they thought they were holding his "friend captive." The files on the table show a picture of a dead boy, he surprised by it but it does not completely shatter his resolve, yet is more intrigue in his own file. I think his quarrel with the "Ordeal" is that he is blind to the process of it. He does not know why and this is why he rebels against it. It's not that his peer disappeared its that he does not like being in the unknown. All in all, a great piece of writing. If it's good enough to keep me or any of us watching for 24 minutes, its good.

I expect that this organization has very powerful friends and they have a way of fixing things. My suspicion is that 2/3 are always killed and the order now has a way to ensure loyalty. They say to the new member, if you ever are disloyal, you will spend the rest of your life in jail for the murder of the two boys that you killed.

Think about it this way, it’s a hypnotic camp. The kid was starving to death with little to no food a day meaning for just that he’s mentally weak. He works labor all day. And where we saw his first push was when he hit the kid with the shovel. The second was killing Dustin, even if it was a accident. From there his mind would be extremely weak to any sort of hypnoction. And that last video is what hypnotized him.

At 1:08 Scouts Founder David Matthews is talking about a "duty to King and Country." Is that just a cliched expression or an early clue that this film is set in a very twisted alternate version of our Universe? I take the fact that the "Scouting Federation of America" was founded in 1953 and that Mr. Matthews founded it "28 years ago," making the setting of this film in 1981 another such clue. I guess I will find out.

Ahh,the sound of shovel against skull- Clunk with a bit of Tinggg - the Technical Crew must have used a melon as a stand in during the early Production Phase . One would be amazed by the work it takes to produce even a Short like this One . Well done One and All. Ever since I saw the Original Star Wars -A New Hope , I've been fascinated by Special Effects and whilst Plot,Character development , Character interplay and Acting are vital for a successful Production ,convincing Props and Effects make a Production all the better. I've seen otherwise good Stories or Plot lines basically ruined because of sub-par special effects and or props .

This "secret organization" in the movie is actually called the Order of the Arrow in Boy Scouts. It's not secret in real life but it requires you to be one of the best scouts of your troop. They also take ideas from the Order of the Arrow like the vow of silence which you also take in the ordeal to get into the Order of the Arrow. The ordeal is basically where you work all day to prove that you can cheerfully and encouragingly help your community

Um I'm not knocking it I'm just curious how much of the story are you leaving to interpretation for the audience to decide what the context is about here. Is it a government sect running a program , a cult , a rogue faction of scouts that couldn't leave the scout life behind , a place where parents send their kids to test them and give them a career there's quite a few ideas but it wasn't told well you really could have went with a much better backstory to this and then tried to tackle something like this

@benjovi55 Spoilers: The "Order" needs ruthless people who will do anything, can't do that with a conscience. For this, they set up a camp for weeding out sociopaths, and once they feel they've found them, they send them to the final test. Each of the boys at the camp was a sociopath, all trying not only to make their way through the trials, but also trying to APPEAR like they were normal. They were thought to have little in common, but that's because they were all hiding their one commonality. When the winner won, it showed us that everything before was him faking it- he didn't "accidentally" kill anyone, he killed two kids on purpose. Only once he realized what company he was truly in did he drop his disguise.

@@AvgJoeCrowe Ya, except why would he save half the bar or try to get to know Dustin? I mean the ending isn't terrible, but there's no build up to his sudden turn. There are only a few scenes in this, so the scenes where he seems to care need to be able to be re-contextualized as a 'smart' move for a killer, but honestly they really don't. The huge investment he made to help and make an ally out of the other scout wasn't worth it strategically. He was too controlled and passive in the fight for food to be an obvious psychopath. He profusely apologizes to someone he just stabbed as if it was an accident, but if the plan was to kill them preferably before they could even say who did it, why? Even in conversations he always talked about things being 'strange' or non-scout-like rather than dangerous or outside the trainees' interests. Even if you consider all these moves as attempt to get information, cover his tracks/mentality, and make useful and expendable 'friends', the extremely personal and empathetic way he accomplishes these goals would be very uncharacteristic of someone who can kill so easily. Perhaps such people exist, but with so much time spent on this character away from judging eyes it seems weird to not show any of these tendencies. The filmmakers may try to do this by having him search through the files instead of continue to look for Dustin, but with him nowhere to be found and likely killed or sent home by that point I would likely read any information I found as well. Personally, if I wanted to hint at the ending without giving it away, I'd show him finishing off the bar before talking to the other scout while digging the latrine, or offer it to him to make a distraction. In some way, show he no longer was saving it for Dustin because as we later learn, Dustin was no longer useful to him. Next, I would have him actually have killed the guy with that shovel swing, so that they had to go and find him. Finally I would cut away right as he turns to stab his 'friend' that we think is a scoutmaster and do a short time-skip to the scoutmaster's arriving while he apologizes to them for the 'accidental' murder. Honestly, we just see too much that doesn't fit for this otherwise quality story to carry off that chilling but completely nonsensical ending.

@@enjohneering9673 he didn't give up the bar for "getting to know" the other guy... he almost ate it whole himself (selfishness a trait of sociopaths), but realized that this may out him. Instead, he used it as a tool to "blend in" a bit better, something real sociopaths do all the time, feign altruism.

@@AvgJoeCrowe joseph. STOP. please stop trying to make this short something it's not. EVERYTHING IS BAD about the film. the writing the acting the plot, the timing...it's really not good. all u have to do is look at the other omeletto films for comparison. each of the boys were not sociopaths. do u even know what a sociopath is? the kid who got knifed was anything but a sociopath. the only kid who could possibly get the label was the guy who got the shovel in the face, but even he fails the sociopath test because he attempts to REASON with his desire for being in the order. true sociopaths would NEVER, EVER do this. a sociopath wants to gratify his OWN goals, and they never attempt to critically analyze why. they don't care and lack the ability to care why. he was unexpectedly inducted into americas next top camp buddy, and did not know why like the rest of them. a sociopath is not interested in this because sociopaths thrive from their own goals centered around self. your whole summary is so elementary and shows u know little to nothing about film in general.

Oh wow,your comment got me thinking that yeah, he was acting. But then I thought about how he cut the food in half to share with Dustin. But was he? Or was that presented in such a way to make us *think* he was. Maybe he had simply decided to save half for tomorrow. Maybe he was actually on his way to do in Dustin since he was weakened. Because thinking about how he attacked the other kid, that *seemed* out of character, totally out of the blue, unless, as you wrote, he had planned this all along and was just acting like a nice guy. Ooo. It all makes sense now! Amazing writing and directing and acting all! Good job!

@@rabbitcult8394 You asked "why would we need to think that he was okay? he dosen't know we exist?" Dude. I'm talking about the writers purposefully writing it in this way as to fool the viewers into thinking he's a good guy. The character was trying to make the others think he was just a regular nice guy, not a killer. Makes for a surprise ending. It's well-crafted story-telling. And please. I honestly don't care if you're an actor, it does not instantly make you an expert in your field. And telling me I'm wrong? Interpretation of a story is all a matter of opinion. Wrong and right has nothing to do with it, since no facts are involved. Agreeing or disagreeing is more the case. :)

This has kind of a LOST / Get Out vibe to it, by the end. Was the kid always a psycho even with what looks like altruistic actions on his part, or did the ordeal he went through change him, or was it actually some freaky brain-rearranging done by the final video or the static before and after it? We shall never know... I'm voting it was the video, possibly along with the special energy bar he'd eaten part of. Whatever it really was, he's going to be one hell of an evil scoutmaster.

In this case it was a log cabin so it wouldn't work however people please keep in mind if the door will not budge and just too hard to get through sheetrock can often be easier to beat through. You can take anything pointy or slightly sharp or even the end of the broomstick and punch holes in the wall to see where the studs might be your where a spot between them might be. Yes there might be some wires in there I'm not saying cut the wires you might have Plumbing somewhere in the walls but in general most of the walls face is pretty vacant and you can get through. If you're ever held captive somewhere if you are ever in a fire situation and cannot escape a room. However if you're in a fire situation do be aware that opening up air flow can increase flames suddenly for a bit as it reaches out for the oxygen it may now have access to. Point is you don't need a door you can make your own

I feel like the scout summary is a clue of some sort into the background of Jackson's personality, but it's so damn frustrating trying to figure out what half the blurred words in the description are that I'm gonna give up on trying any longer. So far from what I've gathered, he has a 3.2 GPA and has a particular interest in computer programming and videography, but more importantly, he is not the most physically suited for this challenge, has great communication although preferring to stay quiet (which is curious considering he starts the conversations with both the other candidates, as well as both of his parents agreeing that he was a good candidate for the program, as well as he has had various discipline reports filled out due to insubordination.

I am a Boy Scout and I am part of this Brotherhood. The ordeal is a real thing, but it’s just not a week long thing. And you get selected out of every troop(2 people), not tens of thousands of people. The physical labor and measly amount of food is also true. So is the silence. It is called the order of the arrow and it’s not this serious at all compared to the movie.
