Yes, Daemon was upset/mad when Viserys named Rhaenyra as his heir, but that did not start the civil war, in fact, Daemon was on Rhaenyra's side of the civil war.... The civil war is more about the Blacks faction (Rhaenyra-Daemon-Corlys-etc) v. the Greens (Queen Alicent-Aegon II-etc).

I mean it literally is. They mainly went off book well before the books even ran out. So it's mainly just fanfic with a few broadstrokes thrown in from what GRRM told them and what they decided to use, which considering established book canon, probably wasn't a lot of things, which is why so much of what happens in the later seasons makes zero sense from established content, possible foreshadowing, and characterization and character themes in the books. So yeah, basically consider everything post S4 non-canon. :P

Why present it as if the civil war is between Rhaenyra and Daemon? Sure, there are some issues early on with Daemon thinking he should be the next king, but by the civil war begins with the Queen Dowager having her son crowned king in defiance of Viserys's orders before even informing his named heir of his death. By that point Daemon and Rhaenyra are the closest of allies.

Well you are talking the year 129. This show starts in the year 101. From that 30 year span… you can’t give episode 10 away. The story starts much earlier. The true war is built this season, before Aegon even emerges. Daemon and Viserys. Rhaenyra and Criston Cole. Rhaenyra and Alicent. And Rhaenyra and Daemon. And everything Otto. And Alicent. He’s the big piece. So… have to start with the first episode, which will center around Heir of the Dragon. And that’s unborn baby, Rhaenyra, and Daemon. Then move forward.

But to be fair to the showrunner of this show, he has been best friends with GRRM for a long time, and was a fan of the books long before the show was even a concept. So, if nothing else, he will try his absolute best and not get tired of doing it midway through. It will also probably be a shorter show, 4-5 seasons to tell the story properly, as opposed to the needed 10-12 season Game of Thrones needed.

@@jamesgarretson2922 I very much appreciate your input, I did not look too deep into who was making the show or whether GRRM was going to be involved. This is for the same reason why I don't immediately want to jump onto this show, and that is a decision I made from experience with my own personality. I'm an all or nothing type of person, I am a nerd and either I will research every detail to something I have a fascination for, or I will not care at all about it. GOT has taught me a lesson in how I tend to waste my time like that. It's a different thing when the time invested eventually leads you down a journey where you at least have a good time doing it and still can look back at that experience thinking-that this has become an important part of who you are as a person through a certain phase in my life. I had these experiences with a few shows, like with Gravity Falls. I only heard that the show was good, after it was finished, so there is no harm in nerding out and looking too deep into the puzzles and everything, but with GoT, revisiting older episodes is just so empty, it frustrates me more than it gives me a good time. This is not to say that I think everyone should have my attitude towards a show, not everyone will react like me and I understand that my attitude might come off as ignorant to some, but it's really just a level of self awareness that I'm putting to use. I think it's great for everyone that is still open and enthusiastic about this show, that's beautiful, and you guys can keep me posted a few seasons in, if this is worth a shot.

Hello! I think you should give this show a try since GOT was ruined because 1) they had to rush the ending when they clearly should've had at least 3-4 more seasons 2) they had no idea what to do with the finale. But for HotD, the ending of the story is already written&sealed by GRRM and it's not as long or complicated as GOT. the only thing the showrunner must do is to adapt the story properly and fill in the gaps well on the topics open to interpretation (since this is a history book, not a novel) and so far, they are doing amazing!

300 years in power is nothing in Westeros. Most of the other houses have been in power for literally thousands of years. The Targaryens destroyed themselves in less than 300 years despite being by far the most powerful house in Westeros because they couldn't stop their constant infighting. I think they are deviating the audience from the main plot. I don't remember very well but I think that in the books he was sent away because they were afraid he might manipulate Rhaenyra when she was young, but he was very clear on where the power was to reside, he took it as duty really.

I think GoT doesn't just comment on women being denied power, I think it busts the myth that this is a purely ideological and not an equally, if not primarily opportunistic stance. In the books that is much more spelled out. On-screen, it is not that clear in TV Daenerys's case, but it will be in TV Rhaenyra's that those jockeying for power will fall behind a woman as easily as they may oppose her depending on what they stand to gain or lose respectively. And that a woman denied power because of prejudice doesn't equal a woman deserving power or up to the job, as was demonstrated, in some ways, through Cersei and will hopefully be demonstrated through Rhaenyra who was a pretty flawed person.

FYI that coin quote is very misleading. There has only been 7 cases of madness in the Targaryen Dynasty. Only 7 cases out of a 114 Targaryen's in 300 years and that's being generous and includes Dany (Which is only show canon). Only 6% of Targaryen's, which isn't even close to 50%, thus that quote about the coin is very obvious anti-Targaryen propaganda in the show and the books. Honestly if you look at real history, let's say the Plantagenet and Tudor dynasty's, the Targaryen's are all very "normal" and comparable to them. Like they also had mad king's and weak king's and tyrants and religious zealots. The only difference is the Targayen's have dragons. And I have to say if most of the real life historical figures in the Plantagenet and Tudor dynasty's had dragons it would have probably been way more horrendous than anything the books depicted. Like imagine King Henry VIII with dragons *shudders*. But like, when you look at specific dynasty's in history and even the other houses in Westeros, you see a variety of different types of people from all of them, which includes the bad and the "mad" and the weak and the strong and the good and the holy and the innovators, etc etc. Anyway, this is an often overused quote that annoys me, just like "You know nothing, Jon Snow" which the show completely misunderstood the context for, inevitably making Jon an idiot, when he's actually really intelligent in the books and that quote was about Jon's ignorance and initial prejudice of Wildling culture, and not about his actual intelligence as a whole.

It was just a horrible ending all together. Dany was presented as a ray of hope against all odds, while the world in GoT in general was gritty in earlier seasons (which is what fans loved about the show). The show became less gritty and unpredictable in the later seasons (plot armor, cool one liners and cheesy fanservice) so they decided to kill the character of Dany to make up for these failures and bring back the "grittiness" and surprise while making Bran the "ray of hope". In the end, they achieved neither and left a very questionable message - women who grasp for power are conspired against and punished by the men they trust (which is presented as the right thing to do)... and in the end, the same men will replace her with incompetent, morally bankrupt and corrupt men (like Bronn becoming Master of the Coin because he likes money and was loyal to Tyrion).

He was against her inheriting because legally it should have been him. After he ultimately lost that spot to Aegon he sided with Rhaenyra. Meanwhile he did develop a relationship with Rhaenyra and sided with her. It will be interesting to finally get a clear reason for the shift.

I'm done with Game of Thrones. I am willing to read the remaining two volumes of A Song of Ice and Fire, but that's it. The awful GoT's season 8 is still hard to swallow.

@@wyatt6403 It definitely does have more potential. Most of the people involved in the creative process were not involved in GOT. Miguel Sapochnik and Ramin Djawdi are the exceptions. GRRM also has more creative control (he had none with GOT), and even the head honcho's at HBO are different people entirely. Not to mention they have a real writer's room that consists of more than 3 people. All these things made me change my mind about watching as I was really adamant about not doing so at the beginning when they announced the show.

I don't understand, what do you mean by Daemon not being able to accept that Rhaenyra is the heir? SPOILERS AHEAD From what i remember after reading the book he was a bit salty about this, but he did pledge his allegiance to Rhaenyra and marry her. And he went on to dying for her cause.

Daemon literally left enraged for Dragonstone with his mistress because King Viserys had named Rhaenyra the heir. That's not just "a bit salty". Dude also resigned from his post as the Lord Commander of the City Watch over that.

Blackwash is a term made up by white supremacists. Just say you don't like black people and stop being a coward about it. Steve Toussaint was getting a load of harassment just for playing Corlys Velaryon. The fact that people have to personally attack an actor is so sad. Tis also happened to John Boyega who played Finn in Star Wars, people said stormtroopers are meant to be white and they personally attacked him for playing a character. Another person is attacked, I don't remember her name but Ewan McGregor made a video defending her and said those who attacked the actress were not real fans. Seems to be a repeating trend that the actual people playing the characters are being attacked for being "too dark" to play a character. GRRM isn't complaining about race, it's just people like you. So if black people being on your TV screen are making you that uncomfortable then just don't watch the show. Nobody is forcing you to watch it. Find something else to enjoy.

People who complained about not having a lot fo battles in the season... What did you expect? A battle per season? This is GOT universe... It has always been all about the characters and their arc. Battles are surely impressive to watch, but it's really about the characters. This is a story telling, not the avengers. There were so many important moments in the last episode. Those who didn't see them, I'm sorry but you don't care at all about the writing or the actual story. Just go and watch Michael Bay movies. This season allowed to add a lot of dimensions to certain characters and evolved their arcs. And we got a detailed context to on what's coming. This was a good season. Also, the book readers are always so quick to criticise and make comparisons, when they don't even understand that the book was written from historians point of view, it's an outsider perspective. Which means that there is a room for many interpretations... Before everyone complained thay they rushed up the ending of game of thrones and now you're complaining HOTD is going too slow.

I am so excited about this show tbh. Costume designs, the diversity among dragons, political drama, scandals .. One of the most chaotic reigns in the Westeros history. GRRM guided them from start to end, and he said this show will be based on book totally. Team Daemon .. ride or die ❤️
