Interesting Velaryon's are 'The Old, The Brave, The True'. Also, it should be noted Aegon the Conqueror's mother was a Velaryon. They are my Second favorite house after the Starks. It used to be Starks and then Targs. But now it is Starks, Veys, and Targs. Veys are just dragon-riders with ships, which is like a bonus point.

Normally, regardless they have the old Valyrian blood, the Velaryons themselves never were Dragonriders. This is mentioned in the series and the books, but of course the heirs of the Velaryons have Dragons now. But ur right, they are an absolutely interesting house and I’ve started liking them more as the Targaryens as well.

Especially regarding Helaena and also Aemond’s personality and overall mythos. I remember a particular interview he compared Aemond with the cyclops and got the mythology completely wrong, although he was probably fed that by the writers.
