I've been struggling with this song for about two weeks now, purely because of that sly F chord. I'm forcing myself to get the bar version right. I want to remember "House of the Rising Son" as the song I learned to play F on haha! Thanks for the video. Update: I’ve finally mastered it. A month later and now I can play the F major bar chord without even looking at the frets. I’m not bragging. I just want beginners like myself who are struggling to see this and realise anyone can do it with a bit of work and dedication!!!!!

Man, this is good chord change practice -- a change every measure with no breaks. I like it because the nature of the timing prohibits "stretching" a beat to hit the chord. You can't. It sounds terrible. Every chord has to be spot on, every time.

I love Marty's Music because he gets you started right off the bat really quickly and started to get the basics of the song down. And Justin also has this great no fat format of video, but he also shows how complexity can be added, and it's really cool to see. The strumming patterns, the rhythmic flexibility, and the different ways to play. I can see how you could pickup the song b starting finger style, then moving to the double strum and then a brisk six strum. Really cool to see how you can add complexity to a simple song.

Listen to Hilton Valentine play it. He plays the pick raking version however there is an open G string played between the A minor and C chord and indeed open G between all of the chord changes. Often missed by teachers I'm sorry to say. The open G is the sound of "house of the rising son". Without it, something is missing. It actually makes the chord changes easier to grab too... Take a listen to Hilton Valentine on the original Animals track. Check it out..... Its subtle but well worth playing it that way. Its authentic.. Eg on Amin play open G as the last note instead of the A note 3rd string. before going to C and so on before each chord change.
@stanleytesla1651 Жыл бұрын
I'm a newbie and I've followed Justin and others showing me how to play it with with no open G. It sounds great though it's not original. Just saw a video by Brian May showing the original open G. I had no idea. When you play it slow it sounds off though when you speed it up, you don't notice. Wow! I can't believe everybody missed it. Lol!

@adrianco19789 жыл бұрын
stick with it, you'll get there eventually.
@mysteriousdoge12989 жыл бұрын
Crystal If you think F is hard try chords like 1-1-3-3-3-1 using only your 1st and 3rd finger (both fingers make bars on 1st and 3rd fret). Or try to play a D chord with your 1st finger barred on 7th fret - going from a bass E string down it looks like that - 10-9-7-7-7-10. Now that is hard:) but suprisingly possible (its one of the chords from Hotel California song). Of course its for the future after you get used to F chord;) ( Don't worry, everything comes with time with guitar).
@fiftypeehead9 жыл бұрын
It's worth the effort. Sometimes I wrap my thumb over the top to fret the big E string. with my index finger on the first fret b string angled enough to kill the high e string. Not exactly textbook but easier to get to and sounds okay and works all the way up the neck

I got the lyrics and chords off the internet a while back and watched one video. Your video is much better because you show how to play this three different ways. The other way I was playing it was one down stroke on the base and the three up strokes on the high E, B and G strings. The song never sounded right but was just OK. After your video and playing around with it, the sound is much better. I prefer the picking pattern you showed and the last part of the video (not sure what to call the pattern), with the down stroke on the four strings and then up on the other three. (yes, I know the first is a quarter and the others are eights). Great video, keep therm coming. I have used your stuff many times. Thank You.
