One thing I'll say about the remake is that Robert Zemeckis produced it. Being that he's a director who was constantly pushing the envelope technology-wise, you can see why the special effects and makeup are a lot more creative and visually interesting than your average slasher of the time.

I know a lot of people have already said this, but the original Mystery at the Wax Museum is really great. What’s strange about it is that the main character played by Fay Wray is really funny and witty, while the tone of the overall film is actually a bit creepier and menacing. It’s an interesting contrast in the film. Be sure to watch it on the restored blu ray version, the older versions look terrible

I've not seen the original, but I did just sit and watch the remake for the first time. I will say that I almost turned it off 30 minutes in. I found it super slow to start, but I'm glad that I waited it out. I found myself very anxious throughout this movie because of the atmosphere it created and I applaud it for that. I even caught myself holding my breath during the climax. The original is definitely on my list to watch as after watching your 50s video I realized that I haven't watched as many old movies as I thought, haha.

Hey, been watching your videos, keep up the great content. Did you know that the House of Wax (1953) is in itself a remake of a 1933 film called Mystery of the Wax Museum starring Lionel Atwill. If you have the dvd release its actually a special feature on it. Would love to see your thoughts on it.

I like the plot of the 1953 version better. The 2005 version seems too much like Wrong Turn (2003). The special effects in the more recent one are fantastic, tho! The Paige (Paris Hilton) death was so well done, too!

Great to see someone else has that appreaciation for Vincent Price, and his version of House of Wax. I'm pretty sure that was my first horror film I watched back when I was but a 3-4 year old in the 90's. Even though I grew to love 80's slashers only a few years later, I find that the revival era in a lot of cases missed the point by trying too hard to give thematic point to each movie. Back in the 80's it was so simple: premarital sex, drugs, and general mischief that teens got up to were "the bad thing", and you didn't need much more than that. Hearing that you've done more videos like this, I'm looking forward to seeing them pop up on my feed now, and honestly more interested to see which comparisons you've chosen to do

YESSSSS both movies are so different but similar that is impossible to choose . Vincent from the original is an underrated villain omg ! I personally loved the remake cause it’s one of the very first slashers I watched . FUN FACTS : Paris Hilton was told to be with underwear for HOURS so by the time they would shoot , her tearing eyes and tiredness was real lol Also , the final girl , she literally had glue on her mouth and literally ripped that off , she said she felt she was gonna lose her lips. I completely agree with the remake being a bit long . Like it has some unnecessary scenes that doesn’t add anything to the storyline. @@HauntedHippie Movies before the 50’s are amazing! Kind of surprised you haven’t checked them out. Do you think you’ll ever do a 1930’s horror movie video series? Since those movies were made in the pre-code era, they featured a lot of risqué dialogue and more disturbing elements. There are some lines of dialogue in the Mystery at the Wax Museum that wouldn’t get past the censors in the 50’s.

I Have Seen Both Films & Reviewed Each Film On My Letterboxd Account. While I Can Say That I Agree With Both Opinions About Both Movies Because Each Film Had Different Perspectives & Perceptions About What They Were Going For Socially, Visually & Storytelling Wise The Entire Underline Undertones Between The Two Movies, Both Films Had Uniqueness To Them. I Personally Love How Classic The Original Is & How Up-To-Date To A Strong Enough Degree The Remake Was. Vincent Price & Paris Hilton Were Easily The BEST Parts About Each Of Their Individual Films In My Opinion. I Can Say That. Paris Can Actually Act, It's Kinda Like The Megan Fox Situation Where Male Audiences Specifically Just See Her As Eye Candy Without Seeing A Lot Of Her Potential In Whatever Work She Does. I'm Not One Of Them By Any Means & I Absolutely Love The Love She's Getting Now With The Instant Cult Following Status Upbringing Of Jennifer's Body & Till Death. Both Films I Loved Her Mostly In. But Back To Paris, Yes, She Can Act & I Would Love To See Her Act A Lot More In Movies. She At Least Deserves That Positive Upbringing Potential For Her Worldwide Fans To Gleefully Witness & Appreciate. As Far As Vincent Price... The Man Is A Legend. I don't really like the 2005 version that much. I consider it a remake in name only. I prefer the '33 and '53 versions. The '33 one had a great female reporter who figured it all out. And it was pre-code so there's references to sex and illegal booze. And the drunken artist was a junkie. Also the look of the sets were very cool. In the '53 version, Vincent was the only male who was kind to Sue, while the boyfriend and cops were condescending and patronizing.
