I’m UK bunny mum and I can’t believe you’ve done an episode here. Keeping rabbits outside is definitely something that is perceived to be what we do here. I’ve raised two bunnies indoors - and they love it and it’s so easy to do but you have to put the work in. Mine gets outdoor exercise in spring - autumn with my supervision (no cages!) we are also very under stocked with rabbit stores unfortunately and pets at home has certainly taken over. Thanks for doing this for the UK!

I'm thinking about getting a rabbit (I'm from the UK), how much you expend in food (specifically hay) monthly? Where do you get the hay and what brands you use? I'm having anxiety because having a rabbit in the UK looks impossible, I'm considering gatting a cat because it seems less stressful.

p h i n n sorry to break it to you but there is no animal who is "easy" to take csre of. they sre living beings and one animal shouldn't be a "build up" to get another animal. i have five cats, not one single one of them is easy to take care of. i also need to add that animals can't be "easy" or "for practice" because they live for decades. my first cat lived 18 years, my first dog lived 16 years. rabbits live more than a decade. so, no. not a practice animal or an animal to start before getting a ferret. i am trying to explain this in the most polite way so pls don't interpret this as rude

I completely agree. I see so many people getting their small kids rabbits or hamsters as pets because they believe that they are easy to take care of and then they dump the animal or give it away because it's more work than they realized it would be. I keep hamsters and mice and they are not easy pets to deal with, just like rabbits are difficult, especially if you have no clue what you are doing. I also have two dogs (husky mixes) and aside from training, dogs are not really all that difficult to care for.

I think somehow if she was any less tough in those kind of deliveries that it wouldn’t have the impact that it does on the person she’s educating it may be harsh but it’s for the best in the end we’re talking about the difference between an in adamant object and the life of an animal

X J Shes not trying to be harsh on the girl, or any children, she’s just making them understand that owning a pet, or a rabbit in particular is a serious thing. I’m sure it wasn’t intentional what so ever. The people she visits have asked Lorelei for her help, and along with that may be some constructive criticism, but that’s what they signed up for. She’s only trying to help them so they have a better understanding of ownership. Again, if you have a problem with these videos, I recommend you don’t watch them, and not to have a go at people for supporting a channel.

I love how Lorelei is helping rabbit owners in need and traveling so far and all, but I think she was a bit insensitive. The hutch is beautiful and I'm sure they paid a lot of money for it and the grandfather put in a lot of work to make it. Sad how she suggests to throw it away or burn it -- they could have moved it inside or let the bunny out in it occasionally. I find that my rabbit quite likes the outdoors so I will seasonally let him in his hutch for a few hours. The space too! Compared to most small store bought hutches, that one is giant! I don't see why they couldn't have kept it and let the bunny out once in a while if it was nice out. I don't see why Lorelei sees outdoors as a forbidden space for rabbits, I find that most love it! I just wouldn't go as far as housing a rabbit outdoors year round, I can see the reasoning behind that. Edit: My point is, all rabbits should have the chance to go outdoors if you can. Not all will like it, but those who do should have the option of going outside once in a while. Another Edit: maybe the hutch is a bit small, but still I think the rabbit would have liked to spend like 30 minutes outside to get some fresh air every once in a while. Outdoors are for rabbits too!!

I feel like she doesn't understand that domestic rabbits still have wild rabbit instincts. It's still the same species you know. My rabbits both grew up with a lot of outdoor time and get really depressed when they're kept inside for a long time. There are a few studies that show that they need vitamin D, fresh air, and the ability to dig in the dirt. It lowkey bothers me, she treats Lennon more like a human baby than a rabbit, I think that she just thinks she is right and there is no other way to raise rabbits. A LOT of rabbits really don't like to be around people all the time and would rather live outdoors in a large shed or something than live indoors with their humans 24/7

Lorelei, I respect your channel and what you do but I feel a few things need to be cleared up here. For a start, your perception on outdoor rabbits is well-meaning but it fails to account for numerous variables. You are correct that outdoor living carries with it a higher risk but that risk of dependent on the knowledge and the efforts by the rabbit parent in providing suitable housing. Keeping rabbits outdoors is common in the UK because we do not have particularly large houses and we are often restricted by rental agreements. We also do not have the same level of threat when it comes to predators and therefore the type of housing is going to vary slightly to that in other countries - for one, we do not need to worry about mountain lions, snakes, or bears. High welfare outdoor housing must be large, protected from the elements, contain insulated shelter, thick wooden or metal framing with galvanised fox-proof mesh, concrete slabs or fox proof mesh beneath the grass, feature multiple hiding and escape routes, and ideally have kickboards and shutters for night and poor weather conditions. Any free-range garden time must be closely supervised and only occur when the owner has appropriately secured their garden and calculated potential risks, just as they would with an indoor rabbit. Outdoors rabbits must never be kept in hutches without large secure runs attached and their enclosures must always be appropriately secured with locks and ideally security cameras. Outdoor rabbits must also be given ample opportunity for their coat to adjust to the seasons and should not be transferred indoors or outdoors during harsh weather as this will result in the rabbit ‘freezing’ or ‘overheating’, as suggested in this video. Yes, rabbits DO need time to acclimate - you should not abruptly bring a rabbit with a fully developed winter coat, who is used to living outdoors in harsh English weathers, indoors and into a heated house as this temperature change can result in overheating. This change MUST be gradual, and you should ensure that your heating is off. Outdoor rabbits, when given the correct environment, are incredibly happy rabbits who can exhibit natural behaviours, such as grazing on grass, digging burrows, binkying and basking in the sunshine. When given the correct environment and care, outdoor rabbits are no more likely to experience poor health than indoor rabbits. The prevalence of disease is no less likely to impact indoor rabbits than outdoor rabbits and as such, the only defence against disease is to vaccinate and ensure appropriate hygiene. The important thing to remember here is that rabbits living indoors and outdoors can be subject to inappropriate housing and care in the hands of inexperienced owners. Those of us who are concerned with providing high welfare care ensure that we provide exemplary housing to our outdoors rabbits and we know that our rabbits are catered for in accordance with their own needs. Not every rabbit enjoys indoor living - some prefer to live like their wild counterparts and spend their days digging in the garden, while others prefer to nap inside by a heater. Some rabbits are particularly affectionate and enjoy human company while others prefer to be left to do their own thing and would rather spend time with their rabbit friends. The one significant exception to this, of course, is when considering single rabbits, who should never be kept alone outdoors. Although arguably, rabbits should always be bonded into pairs and groups as humans are not replacements for the companionship and security of their own kind - single rabbits should be a last resort and not a result of the human deciding that they would prefer a single rabbit. Surely, the right thing to do is to evaluate your rabbit and provide them with an environment that is not only safe but caters to their own desires. I for one have had rabbits who hate being indoors and others who hate being outdoors, and I have always catered to their specific needs and can vouch for the fact that my current free-roam house rabbits are always in a fantastic mood they are able to access the garden. To argue the case that rabbits are designed to live indoors can only be done from the perspective of safety due to their vulnerability as domesticated pets, and not on the basis of behaviour or biological need. Note, your remark about the hypocrisy of the RSPCA stating that rabbits should have access to grass but not be given lawn clippings is incorrect. The RSPCA state that you must not provide lawn clippings due to the fermentation that occurs once the grass has been cut. Cut grass must be given immediately and not allowed to sit, which is what is meant here by ‘lawn clippings’, aka., grass left behind after mowing the grass and has started to ferment. It is not merely a case of the grass being contaminated with gasoline - in fact, electric mowers are commonly used in the UK. Now, as for a few other points…. You are shown to be attempting to bond or tempt the rabbit out with banana and yet you criticise the owner for having provided cabbage. Yet, banana is anything but natural or healthy for rabbits to consume. Fruit is not a natural part of their diet, perhaps with the exception of the occasional wild berry. I know that rabbits go crazy for banana and it has its place, but it shouldn’t be promoted as a healthy treat, particularly in the quantity shown here. You also mention that rabbits can be given fruit or lettuce, not clarifying the fact that lettuce is a generic term and iceberg lettuce should not be fed. If anything, a small amount of cabbage is preferable to feeding banana and other sugar-rich foods. As for the matter of the indoor cage, you are absolutely correct that it is not appropriate for living and that rabbits do not play hide and seek in their cages. However, rabbits MUST always have access to a hiding space of their own, and this cage could have been utilised as such by covering it with a blanket, removing the door and allowing the rabbit to come and go. This could also double up as a litter box and bedding. It is also useful for transporting rabbits for long car journeys and when a rabbit is recovering from surgery and must be on bed rest. There is no reason to discard of the cage, except for in circumstances where you fear that the owner would use the cage as housing and not merely a hiding place, which I assume was the case here. Whilst I generally agree with the majority of what you say in terms of rabbit welfare, it’s important to remember that your perspective is merely your perspective. I know that you keep Lennon alone and that you have used a harness in the past, which is something that most rabbit welfare experts will disagree with. Harnesses are not safe and should be used with absolute caution. Dressing rabbits up for entertainment is also not something UK rabbit welfare experts support and in that sense, we are miles ahead of what I have observed amongst the US rabbit community. As for companionship, it is a simple fact that rabbits thrive in the comfort of their own kind and while it’s possible for a rabbit to be well socialised with humans, we shouldn’t expect them to prefer our company to that of their rabbit friends. Most rescue charities, and even pet shops, stress the importance of keeping rabbits in neutered pairs. I also have to point out that when you picked their rabbit up when it was urinating on the carpet, it wasn’t the safest way to do so. You were very abrupt in the way you did so, especially considering the fact that the rabbit was not well socialised, and you did not support the rabbit's spine properly. Please lower yourself to the ground and scoop the rabbit into your arms, supporting its full body and comforting it. Had the rabbit attempted to kick free here it could very well have ended poorly. I really would recommend that you take the time to visit UK rabbit welfare advocates and see the types of enclosures and living conditions they provide to their rabbits - indoor and out, rather than merely visiting those who are inexperienced. You’ll be surprised to find some incredibly large, safe and secure outdoor setups, with incredibly happy and healthy rabbits. In fact, the majority of outdoor setups by experienced rabbit owners far exceed the space and enrichment as observed in many of the indoor setups you have awarded high marks in previous episodes. If this comes across as harsh then I do apologise, but I know that you value honesty for the sake of animal welfare, so I hope you are able to listen and learn from others too.

All of these comments are superb. This whole "essay" really reflects what is clearly years of experience and maturity in rabbit welfare. I certainly learned a lot from it. It should be shared elsewhere also. A lot of the comments to this video are helping me gain different perspectives on quality rabbit welfare in different countries. One thing that did strike me was a sort of limited and superficial cultural understanding on Lorelei's part. And the insults to the UK were hurtful and ineffective in promoting quality rabbit welfare. It is important to remember that the young rabbit welfare influencers on KZbin are on their own learning curves and do not by any means have the final word on rabbit welfare. I hope they also understand that. But by going to England and creating this very much mostly positive video, Lorelei was opening up an important cross cultural dialogue on the subject.

Lorelei, the hay is different because it's from a different country to what you're used to. The grass is British, the farming is British, the mowing happens in England, under different conditions. It's not bad hay, it's just different. Please don't be so rude. Fresh grass is not a problem for rabbits, if they're eating it fresh from the ground, or if it's been hand picked. It's not good for them when it's smushed up from a lawnmower, we rarely have 'gasoline' or petrol lawnmowers in the UK so that point is invalid. Please don't be so rude. At the 07:00 approx mark, you can see how uncomfortable that little girl feels. Yes, make your point that rabbits need a good and comfortable life, but please don't be so rude. There was absolutely no need to throw away the indoor hutch. My rabbit free roams a huge indoor space, and has the cage open with her litter box inside. She hops in and out when she wants to wee or poo and sometimes has little naps in there. There was just no need for it to be thrown away. As for the comments you made about her grandfather's handmade hutch, give an opinion in a tactful and polite way... please don't be so rude. You clearly hadn't heard of the RSCPA prior to visiting this family, so please don't make comments on a national institution. They have nearly 200 years of work in this country, their work is based on very considered research and history. If you disagree with their advice, that's up to you, but have some respect and decorum, and quite frankly, please don't be so rude. I understand and respect the work you're doing, but you are giving the rabbit community a bad name with your closed mindedness and communication style. The positive comments your videos receive are mostly from teenagers or children who look up to you, but any adult followers are going to see this as a disrespectful, and embarrassing bit of footage.

Yikes this was quite insensitive and narrow-minded at points. Don't get me wrong, Lennon lives a fabulous life with Lorelei and I don't want to discredit that, but her way isn't the only way for rabbits to live successfully. I personally think it's actually a bit limiting to have a rabbit strictly indoors and to never experience supervised time outdoors; I have never seen my house bunny happier than when sprinting at full speed across a fenced-in yard. And from my experience working at a shelter and having the misfortune of people insisting on telling me all the horrible ways they let their rabbits die (dog ate them, kid squished them, etc), the U.S. is NOT superior in bunny ownership. Even my current foster bunny was rescued from an adult couple that kept their bunnies outdoors and were planning on dumping the sweet girl because she refused to be a breeding machine. Poor ownership can happen anywhere, it's all about compassionate education. And also, a great form of enrichment for a bunny is to *not* have a bowl. Scattering their pellets allows them to feel like they are foraging for their food, which is a natural instinct. The whole bowl insistance thing sounds more like a personal preference on keeping things neat rather than considering how the rabbit might actually enjoy a little searching. Anyway, I appreciate what this series strives to accomplish. People everywhere can benefit from seeing how amazing rabbits are when given proper living arrangements and care. The look on kid's faces when I tell them my bunny doesn't have a cage and snuggles in bed with me will always be priceless, so keep up the good work in education 👏

I was shocked that the vet said to just wait it out. That couldn't have possibly been a pocket pet vet. You don't wait out a bunny hunger strike. Lack of appetite is a key sign that something is horribly wrong. They need help the sooner the better once you notice a lack of food digestion. My wee man turned his nose to his favourite treat one morning and I knew something was wrong. The pocket pet vet (an hour away) wasn't in until that evening. I was on pins in needles waiting for the trip. They said it was very lucky that I (a first time bunny owner) noticed the problem and sought help immediately because he was in full stasis and most likely wouldn't have made it the night. What kind of pain must that be? To have your entire system freeze up. I couldnt imagine. And I couldn't imagine someone expecting me to wait it out.

@@shigaraki9816 I'm so very sorry for your loss. That is such a sad situation to hear of. My experience taught me that I need to have my research done and a specialty vet on my contacts list. I was so unprepared for that situation and I'm just very lucky that I managed to find one an hour away. The average vet (not knocking their amazing knowledge and contribution to saving animals daily) has not a lot of experience in dealing with pocket pets. Often, they will just defer treatment or recommend a specialty vet. Unfortunately, in my area at least, they are few and far between. What was your little ones name? Breaks my heart to hear of any bun passing. ❤

Awww bless you guys!! I live in the UK and have an indoors bunny. Can’t imagine him living outdoors in the cold by himself. He’s got a big play pen to nap and spend his time while I work and can’t supervise him, but he also spends at least 4 hours free roaming in my living room and kitchen every day. My favourite time of the day is when I lie down on the floor every evening when he’s free roaming and he comes to me to give me kisses and then demands to be smoothed and petted. He’s the best remedy after a long stressful day and can’t imagine my life without him ❤️❤️❤️

As someone from the UK, my rabbit got regular access outside and lived in our heated shed. I think there's nothing wrong with having an outdoor bunny as long as you're responsible and make sure at night time/when you can't watch it, it's secured and warm. ALso... not sure why the indoor cage was asked to be removed... could be used as a litter box? Interesting too see the UK and USA diufferences though

19:40 Outdoor bunnies definitely do need time to acclimate to living indoors, especially from September till May. They will already have a winter coat by then, so taking them inside can be very dangerous (it can cause heat stroke amongst other things)! Only ever take an outdoor bunny inside during summer when they don't have a winter coat. Or if they are ill and can't keep themselves warm. And then start with keeping it in a colder room first so they can acclimate. The same goes the other way around, don't put indoor bunnies outside during the winter, not even for a little while, because they don't have a winter coat and they are more likely to get ill or even die from the temperature shock.

I know the grandad spent love and time building that. Just for it to get called garbage/trash? Ok, wow.

I'm from the UK and I'm actually really embarrassed of their bunny care standards. Like seriously, how dare they?!

I love how open minded they seemed to be and I swear I don’t want to be mean or come off overly judgmental but how could they tell you straight to your face that they’ve watched your videos for months and months yet everything that had anything to do with their rabbit was so wrong even on the easy and common sense stuff..?? 🤔😑 that part is extremely confusing to me since your videos are nothing short of free information videos showing and explaining literally EVERYTHING there is to know about rabbits and your channel is an encyclopedia of how to care for them step by step in such detailed explanations.. I’m so glad you were able to help little Apollo have a much better life INDOORS lol You do so much for bunnies everywhere so thank you for all the time and effort you give bunnies and their humans when they need it most 🙏 💯 🐰 💕 👏

tasha 111 I do agree, however, because of the cultural differences they were obviously getting mixed messages and were probably just confused which is why they were asking for help ☺️

Right, okay. I really have had a lot of help from this channel with my bunny but I find it very, very annoying when people think they can tell people what to do and the RSPCA are a very, very large organisation and even though America is bigger , doesn’t mean it’s right! It’s absolutely great that you are trying to help people be better at taking care of there rabbits but ‘educating’ the RSPCA that’s just annoying. I’m really, really trying not to hate, and I’m trying to be careful about that but I’ve noticed that Lorelei is very ‘right ur doing it wrong’ person and that she tells people what to do a lot , and u can also see other people getting annoyed at it too. I really don’t like this series and that Lorelei gets to go around houses and throw stuff in the bin. I mean Malaya’s grandpa built that and u seriously wanted to throw it away and set it on fire. I sincerely hope u don’t take offence and I’m not trying to give hate I just think it’s a very undermining project, to go and tell people how look after animals and pointing out the smallest most insignificant mistake. I really, really do hope u don’t take offence and I really am trying not to hate

I definitely understand where u are coming from, she should have re used the old cage into something else but other than that I think she did a good job in making the rabbits living area better. There are alot of risk to keeping a domesticated rabbits outside. And I do think she was quite blunt with the way she worded things but I think I she just has alot of passion for rabbit keeping.

I love bunnies! But can’t have one yet!! But I love these videos. I can’t actually believe you came all the way to Britain! I feel honoured. Although I’m waiting patiently until it’s safe for a bunny! (I have a dog that’s roughly 8, and had her since I was 18 and moved out. We have a hamster! And know how important floor space is. So wouldn’t want anything less than a free roam bunny. I have loads of room in the living room/dinning room but no spare rooms- so I love these episodes! To see exactly how we bunny proof everything! My heart explodes imagining a massive bunny corner where all their stuff is with lots of floor space to hop and run around! (We will need lots of friction rugs and blankys because we have wooden floor which would be too slippy for running and hopping!) You’re brutally honest and I love it! Bunnies will always be one of my favourite animals! I’m quite shy, so would understand the bunnies emotions feeling timid, shy and scared.. as that’s how I feel. I’m too excited and I’m no where near the time I can get a bunny! But these episodes are adorable! When my hamster wakes up I’ll stroke him and imagine he’s a tiny bunny! I can never afford a pony.. so to watch bunny care excites me! I can even get hay! I need to calm down 😂😂🤷🏼‍♀️
