In the western U.S. on old family farms it is traditional to go to the back door of the house to enter. My dad told me many years ago that's how you find out who the salesman and preachers are.

It's funny though in the UK it's actually very common to use the back door as the main, it's something i've never really thought about. You'd be surprised especially bungalow type houses.

It looks like it could be a Swallow or House Martin nest. Both spicies Migrate to Britian from parts of Africa to nest. They stay here from March to October. It looks like they make quite a mess but if you do a little reserch you may discover how special they are and learn to love them. I would love to have them nest on my house : )
